Vomiting and diarrhea inducing internal wind, with membranes forming on the eyelids; the pathogenic factor in the eyes is elusive.
After acute convulsion (Ji Jing), if panting continues without cessation; after chronic convulsion (Man Jing), the skin becomes thin.
After intestinal colic (Pan Chang) has passed, the heart feels lonely (indicating deficiency of spleen-stomach and malnourishment of the heart spirit); coughing, vomiting, and regurgitation lead to a sunken epigastrium and aversion to food.
In cold damage (Shang Han), red pulses intersect with cyanotic pulses; heat accumulation causes black complexion and shedding of hair and skin.
When pox toxins enter the abdomen and the eyes remain unopened; excessive purgation for heat-type diarrhea leads to dry mouth and aversion to food.
Lockjaw (Suo Kou) accompanied by drooping waist and cyanotic lips; accumulated dysentery with spleen toxicity leads to curled lips.
These conditions arise from fright rather than food stagnation; how could there be immortal elixirs left behind?
Case of Luo Qianfu: An infant in May suffered abdominal pain due to consuming cold rice noodles. He subsequently purchased Shenxiong Wan (Caulis Ligustici Chuanxiong Pill) from a market pharmacy. The cold pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions gradually intensified, occurring intermittently for over seven years without resolution. Reflecting on the ancient saying, "For cold syndromes, use heat therapy," treating cold with heat is a principle that good physicians must not abandon or alter. The ingested substance was cold, and the administered medicine was also cold. Double cold damaging the stomach indicates a cold disease. Generally, the human spleen and stomach prefer warmth and dislike cold. Moreover, infants have weak blood and qi, unable to withstand such coldness. Thus, yang qi remains latent, cold pathogens linger, and the condition persists for a long time. Treating illness requires addressing the root first; one should use herbs to harmonize the middle jiao and nourish qi to remedy previous errors. After taking the medication for more than a month, the patient recovered. Alas! Confucius had a son named Kong Li. Confucius said, "I have not yet seen him, so I dare not give him medicine." This emphasizes the importance of preserving life. Why do laypeople merely stand aside silently allowing pulse diagnosis, assuming it suffices to know the disease? Pulse reflects the blood and qi circulating within the meridians. Excess heat results in rapid pulses; excess cold results in slow pulses. Excess patterns present with forceful pulses; deficiency patterns present with feeble pulses. How can one distinguish the specific nature of the ingested pathogen solely through pulse? Physicians must carefully investigate the source of the disease. Furthermore, the father of this child failed to inform the physician of the etiology, instead seeking remedies at the market, resulting in a seven-year ailment due to ignorance of this principle. Sun Simiao stated, "Inquiring before diagnosing yields the most accurate results." Su Dongpo said, "Seek only to cure the disease, do not seek to perplex the physician." The words of these two gentlemen have contributed greatly to the world.
