Sun Simiao said: During periods of extreme cold and extreme heat, one must not indulge in sexual desires.
Medical texts state: Whenever there is strong wind, heavy rain, dense fog, thunder and lightning, solar or lunar eclipses, earthquakes, or when the sky and earth are darkened, one must not engage in sexual intercourse under the sun, moon, stars, within temples and monasteries, beside wells, stoves, and latrines, or near graves and corpses. Doing so will shorten one's lifespan. If conception occurs during these times, it will not only harm the parents a hundredfold, but the child born will be unkind and unfilial, prone to illness, and short-lived.
The *Baoming Jue* (Prescriptions for Preserving Life) states: One should not violate the "Longevity" days, nor engage in sexual intercourse on days when various deities descend, as this will shorten one's life. Violating the first day of the lunar month (Shuo) reduces life by one Ji (12 years); the fifteenth day (Wang) by ten years; the last day (Hui) by one year. The eighth day (First Quarter Moon) and the twenty-third day (Last Quarter Moon), as well as the Three Yuan days, reduce life by five years. Gengshen and Jiazi days reduce life by one year. On the third day of the first lunar month, all deities gather; on the fourteenth and sixteenth days, the Three Palaces deities descend; on the second day of the second lunar month, all deities gather. The Four Li (Start of Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) days, the two Equinox days, the two Solstice days, and the two She days (Spring and Autumn sacrifices) are all forbidden for sexual activity. On the ninth day of the third lunar month, the Ox Demon Gods descend; violating this leads to malignant illness and death within one hundred days. On the fourth day of the fourth lunar month, all deities undergo good transformation; violating this causes loss of voice. On the eighth day, the Good and Evil Child Deities descend; violating this leads to death from blood disorders. In the fifth lunar month, the third, sixth, and seventh days are the Nine Poison Days; violating this means one will not live beyond three years. On the night of the first day of the tenth lunar month, the Western Heavenly King descends; violating this leads to death within one year. On the twenty-fifth day of the eleventh lunar month, the Luesheng Dafu (Official of Surplus Snatching) descends; violating this results in a short life. On the night of the seventh day of the twelfth lunar month, violating this leads to death from malignant illness. On the twentieth day, the Heavenly River intersects for travel; violating this shortens life. On the twenty-eighth day of each month, the Human Spirit is in the Yin position; on the tenth day of the fourth lunar month, Yin and Yang are purely active. Engaging in sexual intercourse on the above-mentioned days and hours is already impermissible, let alone marriage.
According to the *Gengshen Lun*: Why did the ancients often enjoy their full natural lifespan, while modern people do not reach their natural end? It is because they do not know how to avoid and be cautious, indulging in lust and secretly violating taboos, causing the Yin Court to deduct their years of life. How many people can reach a hundred years old? Meng Chang, the ruler of Shu, took Zhang Lihua as a concubine beside a Daoist temple. One night, amidst thunder and lightning, Zhang died. The Daoist priest Li Ruochong saw, on the night of the Lantern Festival, scholars wearing red shoes and hats standing facing north in the hall, with sinners lined up in the corridor, including a very ugly woman. Li reported this to his master, Tang Dongqing. The master said: This is Zhang Lihua. Her past favor here resulted from her profanity towards the High Truths. From this, we see that the taboos of heaven and earth must not be violated.
