1. To enter the path of medicine, one must clearly discern pulse qualities under the fingers to thoroughly understand the source of disease; only after becoming familiar with the properties of herbs can one prescribe treatments appropriate to the syndrome patterns.
This book places at the forefront those excerpts on Pulse Formulas (Maijue), Pathogenesis (Bingji), Herb Properties (Yaoxing), and Five Movements and Six Qi (Yunqi) that are concise in wording and accurate in meaning, precisely to inspire the advancement of students.
2. Regarding Pulse Formulas, scholars have provided detailed discussions and records. Here, only the essential points are selected for recording. Upon diagnosing a specific pulse, one should know the corresponding disease; the generating and overcoming relationships among pulses, and the severity of diseases, can be seen at a glance through finger palpation. Students must achieve a state where hand movements align with mental understanding, attaining spiritual clarity, which constitutes good learning.
3. Diseases originate from the Zang-Fu organs (viscera and bowels) and are difficult to identify. One must first know which meridian is deficient to determine the affected meridian, and only by regulating that meridian can the disease in it be cured.
This book analyzes internal injuries (Neishang) and external contractions (Waigan) in detail, discussing them thoroughly so that students understand their origins. Consequently, when prescribing remedies to attack pathogens, one can hit the target accurately like an arrow striking a swan.
4. In treating diseases, one must first distinguish between deficiency/excess (Xu/Shi) and cold/heat (Han/Re). If tonification and purgation, warming and cooling are not applied appropriately, it will be like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The treatment methods tested over years are detailed below each disease category. Whether to tonify or purge, warm or cool, there is careful consideration. Applying these methods naturally eradicates the root of the disease.
5. Prescriptions include ancient formulas (Gufang) and modern formulas (Jinfang), all formulated by physicians of past dynasties. I compiled only those I had tested with hundred-percent efficacy; untested ones, even if created by skilled practitioners, were not recorded. This is common knowledge, so surnames are not repeated. Modern formulas mostly come from secret archives transmitted by the Imperial Medical Academy (Taiyiyuan) and collections of gentry families. Formulas effective when created by contemporary famous physicians and my father and son are listed with surnames, titles, and official ranks beneath each prescription to show gratitude to the originators. There are also so-called "Secret Formulas" (Mifang), taught by extraordinary individuals whose names cannot be fully recorded; they are simply marked as "Secret Formula." Having devoted twenty years to study and consulted millions of patients, gathering rare and excellent remedies from north and south, and summarizing secret and verified prescriptions from ancient and modern times, the formulation of medicines has its historical basis.
6. Prescriptions vary: some address total deficiency or total excess, others mixed deficiency and excess, some are neutral and harmonious, others are aggressive and destructive, some treat exterior syndromes exclusively, others interior syndromes exclusively, and some treat half-exterior half-interior syndromes. Each type is clearly noted below the prescription to guide later practitioners in appropriate application.
