Meiheqi (Plum-pit Qi) refers to a sensation of obstruction in the throat, where phlegm cannot be expectorated nor swallowed, feeling as if a plum pit is stuck there. It originates from excessive anger or joy, leading to accumulated heat and stagnation, which subsequently forms stubborn phlegm and qi constraint, causing this disease.
Treatment
The treatment should focus on guiding out phlegm, resolving constraint, clearing heat, and regulating qi. Herbs such as Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome), Shanzhi (Gardenia Fruit), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit), and Suzi (Perilla Seed) may be used. If old phlegm is condensed and difficult to resolve, herbs with salty flavor that can soften hardness, such as Haishi (Fossilized Wood) and Liming, should be employed.
Formulas
Jiawei Siqu Tang (Modified Siqi Decoction) treats Meiheqi syndrome; its efficacy is wonderful and hard to describe.
Sugeng (Perilla Stem, 1 qian), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome, 1 qian), Nongpo (Magnolia Bark, processed with ginger, 1 qian), Fuling (Poria, 1 qian), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, 1 qian), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel, 0.7 qian), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange, 1 qian), Sharen (Amomum Fruit, 1 qian), Baidoukou (White Cardamom, 0.6 qian), Binglang (Areca Seed, 0.3 qian), Nanxing (Arisaema Rhizome, 1 qian), Yizhiren (Yi Zhi Ren, 0.3 qian), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven, 1 qian, stir-fried).
Crush these into one dose, add five slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water, and take well after meals.
Jiawei Erchen Tang (Modified Erchen Decoction) treats Meiheqi.
Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome), Fuling (Poria), Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Suzi (Perilla Seed), Baidoukou (White Cardamom), Shanzhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Gancao (Licorice Root) (all in equal parts).
Crush these into one dose, decoct with fresh ginger, and take orally.
Xingqi San (Qi-Regulating Powder) treats Meiheqi, distension of qi in the throat, and pain attacking the chest and diaphragm due to ascending qi.
Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Wuyao (Lindera Root), Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Nongpo (Magnolia Bark), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, wine-fried), Gancao (Licorice Root).
Crush these, add ten stalks of Dengxincao (Juncus Maritimus), decoct in water, and take orally.
Disease
Yingliu (Goiter and Tumors) are all formed by the coagulation and stagnation of qi and blood. Ying (Goiter) arises from emotional disturbances like anger and joy, often appearing on the shoulders and neck, with loose skin that hangs down when tapped. Liu (Tumor) grows where pathogens remain; initially resembling a plum or apricot, the skin is tender and shiny, gradually enlarging to the size of a cup or egg. There are five types of Ying: those with unchanged flesh color are called Rouying (Flesh Goiter); those with visible veins are called Jingying (Sinew Goiter); those with intersecting red vessels are called Xueying (Blood Goiter); those that fluctuate with worry and anger are called Qiying (Qi Goiter); those that are hard and immobile are called Shiying (Stone Goiter).
There are also six types of Liu: Gu Liu (Bone Tumor), Zhi Liu (Fat Tumor), Rou Liu (Flesh Tumor), Nong Liu (Pus Retention/Tumor), Xue Liu (Blood Tumor), and Shi Liu (Stone Tumor).
Although Ying and Liu typically lack itching or pain, they must never be incised or ruptured, lest pus and blood collapse and leak endlessly, inevitably leading to death. Rou Liu (Flesh Tumor) should not be treated with aggressive methods.
Treatment
For Zhi Liu (Fat Tumor) and Qi Liu (Qi Tumor), herbs that soften hardness such as Haizao (Seaweed) and Kunbu (Kelp) should be used. Dongyuan's Sanzhong Kuijian Tang (Decoction for Reducing Swelling and Hardness) can also be taken frequently to promote resolution.
Formulas
Xiaoying Wuhai Yin (Five-Sea Drink for Dissolving Goiter)
Haidai (Laminaria Kelp), Haizao (Sargassum Seaweed), Hai Kunbu (Sargassum Thallus), Hai Ge (Clam Shell), Haipiaoxiao (Cuttlefish Bone) (each 3.5 liang), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Sanleng (Sparganium Rhizome), Ezhu (Curcuma Rhizome), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Xixin (Asarum Root), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome) (each 2 liang), Zhu Yanzi (Pig Gallbladder Stones, 7 pieces, fried with aged wall soil, dried after removing wine residue).
Grind into powder. Take 0.75 qian per dose, washed down with rice soup well after meals.
Nanxing Gao (Arisaema Paste) treats sores and tumors on the skin, hands, feet, head, and face, ranging from fist-sized to chestnut-sized, either soft or hard but painless.
Take one raw large Nanxing (Arisaema Rhizome), grind finely until sticky, add seven to nine drops of good vinegar to form a paste. For new lesions, use dried Nanxing ground into powder, mixed with vinegar to form a paste. First, prick the tumor surface with a small needle to allow qi penetration, then apply the paste. Apply frequently if itching occurs.
Another prescription adds Caowu (Aconite Lateral Root), Xixin (Asarum Root), and Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root).
