The Three Passages (San Guan) are observed on the lateral side of the third segment of the second finger.
Diagram of Pulse Patterns at the Tiger's Mouth Three Passages [Image]
Purple indicates Heat; Red indicates Cold Damage (Shang Han); Green/Cyan indicates Fright (Jing); White indicates Infantile Malnutrition (Gan); Black indicates Evil Invasion (Zhong E); Yellow indicates Spleen Deficiency and Distress.
Another verse:
Green/Cyan with large or small curves indicates fright from humans or contact with quadrupeds;
Red with large or small curves indicates pathogenic factors of water and fire or contact with avian webbed feet;
Purple with large or small curves indicates injury from consuming rice, flour, fish, or meat;
Black with large or small curves indicates slight spasms due to Spleen Wind.
[Image]
If the pattern resembles a fish bone indicating Fright-Wind syndrome, do not doubt;
If seen at the Qi Passage (middle segment), it is accompanied by fever from Infantile Malnutrition;
If seen at the Ming Guan (distal segment), it is difficult to treat; this represents the Liver pathogen transmitting to the Spleen.
[Image]
At the initial segment (Wind Passage), a hanging needle pattern indicates impending diarrhea and dysentery;
At the Qi Passage, Lung Heat combined with condensed Infantile Malnutrition appears;
If the pulse pattern penetrates straight through all three segments towards the end of the finger (Yellow Spring), this condition must be known as Slow Convulsion (Man Jing).
[Image]
A "Water" character pattern indicates Fright-Wind with Lung affected by Wind;
At the Qi Passage, coughing caused by accumulated phlegm attacking occurs;
Physicians must carefully examine deficiency and excess; if the pattern extends to the Ming Guan, it is a fierce syndrome of mixed Fright-Wind and Infantile Malnutrition.
[Image]
An "Yi" (乙) character pattern definitively indicates Fright-Wind involving the Liver and Lung;
When this shape appears at the Qi Passage, attacks occur without fixed timing;
If this shape penetrates straight to the Ming Guan, it will soon transform into Slow Spleen Wind (Man Pi Feng).
[Image]
A "Curved Worm" pattern primarily indicates the generation of Infantile Malnutrition;
If seen at the Qi Passage, it indicates accumulation of filth in the Liver;
If it reaches the Ming Guan, it is incurable; one must know that Heart pathogen has transmitted to the Liver.
[Image]
Double-ring patterns indicate deep Liver involvement from severe Infantile Malnutrition;
Entering the Stomach meridian at the Qi Passage leads to vomiting and regurgitation;
If present at the Ming Guan, it is a death omen, rendering the physician's efforts futile.
[Image]
The appearance of a "Flowing Pearl" pattern signals approaching death;
Such facial complexion also indicates non-survival;
Even with divine elixirs, the patient cannot be saved; physicians must carefully and repeatedly instruct the family.
[Image]
In Cold Damage syndromes, the pulse pattern slants to the right.
[Image]
In food retention syndromes, the pattern resembles the character "Seven".
[Image]
Double-hook patterns definitively indicate cold injury.
[Image]
Upon encountering fright, the mountain-shaped pattern floats.
[Image]
Thread-like patterns indicate imminent spasms.
The "Feng" (丰) character pattern induces sorrow and worry.
[Image]
In wind-cold damage syndromes, the pulse pattern slants to the left.
[Image]
Patterns resembling a new moon curving to the right indicate Qi-type Infantile Malnutrition stagnation.
[Image]
If curved to the left, medicinal treatment for Wind-Infantile Malnutrition can be administered.
[Image]
Patterns resembling triple-layered curves indicate injury from hard objects.
[Image]
There are also ring-like patterns with legs.
[Image]
Especially undesirable are upper and lower hook patterns; all indicate cold injury syndromes, which physicians must seek diligently.
Severe Infantile Malnutrition resembling consumptive disease, with chaotic intestinal parasites, causes great concern.
[Image]
Intersecting and overlapping patterns reveal abdominal symptoms and their causes.
[Image]
Furthermore, penetrating blue-green veins indicate that among hundreds, none will recover.
