The fatty tissue adhering to the intestinal wall and shedding belongs to the category of essence and blood. Whether a person is thin or fat, this kind of fatty tissue exists within them. Those who suffer from this condition nowadays must have suffered injury to the five zang organs, causing the fatty tissue to become unstable; hence it is referred to as "shedding downwards" (referring to the shedding and downward discharge of fatty tissue). If the qi of the zang organs is slightly strong, the shed fatty tissue will regenerate immediately. However, if the zang qi has been completely depleted, or due to chronic diarrhea or chronic dysentery, only bloody water or pus and blood resembling dripping roof water are observed, this indicates an extremely critical condition of collapse and exhaustion of vital energy. At this stage, one should only focus on stabilizing and consolidating the body's resistance, yet still worry that it may be too late; how much more so would it be inappropriate to use attacking and purging methods, employing bitter-cold herbs to promote sliding and draining?
