Liu Tianxi, a Grand Administrator, had damp-heat internally. His stool was loose and free, but his urination was difficult and obstructed. After taking diaphoretic and leeching agents (Dan Shen Zhi Ji), the condition worsened to the point of dribbling; swelling occurred in the lower abdomen, legs, and knees, accompanied by distending pain in both eyes. This was due to Kidney deficiency with heat in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner). The leeching agents damaged the Yang Qi, preventing the transformation of Yin fluids. Therefore, Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) and Zishen Wan (Kidney-Nourishing Pill) were used, after which urination returned to normal. Subsequently, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) was modified with Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) and Wuwei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), taken concurrently, leading to recovery.
Liu Yugong, a Prefectural Assistant, neglected his daily routine and emotional regulation, resulting in poor appetite and discomfort in the chest and diaphragm. He was treated with digestive and qi-regulating methods, which led to abdominal fullness, vomiting of phlegm, and rebellious qi. Then, phlegm-resolving and fire-clearing methods were applied, causing reduced food intake, diarrhea, and pain in the lower abdomen. Next, water-partitioning and fire-clearing methods were used, resulting in difficult urination, panting, and surging phlegm. After taking Qingqi Huatan Wan (Clear Qi and Resolve Phlegm Pill), urination became more obstructed, diarrhea worsened, the abdomen distended significantly, the umbilicus protruded, and he could not lie down. His six pulses were faint and thin; the Cun position on the left was extremely deficient, and the Cun position on the right was short and rapid. This was a critical syndrome of Mingmen Fire Decline (Decline of the Gate of Life Fire) and Spleen-Kidney Deficiency-Cold. Initially, Jin Gui Jianjia Shenqi Wan (Modified Kidney Qi Pill from the Golden Cabinet) ingredients were used, with Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) each at 1.5 qian. After two doses, a large amount of turbid stasis was discharged. Then, Buzhong Yiqi Tang was used to deliverershenshen Wan (Two Divine Pills); after two doses, all symptoms receded. Five or six days later, several doses of the previous medicines were administered again, along with Fuzi-based preparations applied as patches to the waist-umbilical area and Yongquan (KI1, Gushing Spring) acupoint. The Cun pulse gradually recovered, and he stabilized. Later, due to anger causing abdominal stuffiness, and misled by others' advice, he took Chenxiang Huaqi Wan (Agarwood Transforming Qi Pill), which resulted in blood in the stool and the recurrence of all symptoms. I stated: "This is injury to the Yin Collaterals." I declined treatment, and he indeed died.
A certain man, who was generally poor at self-care, suffered from expectoration of phlegm, dry mouth, and poor diet. After taking phlegm-resolving and qi-moving agents, his chest and abdomen became distended, and phlegm increased. After taking phlegm-guiding and Spleen-regulating agents, his abdomen swelled, and both urination and defecation became obstructed. After taking qi-partitioning and water-leeching agents, his abdomen enlarged with hypochondriac pain, and he could not sleep. After taking blood-breaking and digestion-promoting agents, both feet swelled, and his pulse was floating and large but did not reach the Cun position. In the morning, he took Jin Gui Jianjia Shenqi Wan; in the evening, he took the previous pill delivered by decoction of Buzhong Yiqi Tang. After more than a month, symptoms gradually receded, and dietary intake improved. He then took Bawei Wan (Eight Flavor Pill) and Buzhong Yiqi for another month, after which he could turn over independently. After two more months, he could walk. He subsequently took Dabu Tang (Great Tonification Decoction) and Huan Shao Dan (Return to Youth Elixir), and after half a year, he recovered. Later, when he slightly neglected regulation, his abdomen distended again, but it resolved upon taking the previous medicines.
A certain man suffered from chest and diaphragm fullness and exclusively took qi-breaking drugs. I said: "This is a Blood deficiency disease." Blood is generated from Spleen Earth; if such drugs are taken, Spleen Qi becomes weak, and Blood becomes even more deficient. He did not believe this and took internal-injury medications, which instead caused him to vomit blood. I said: "This is injury to the Yang Collaterals; it cannot be cured." This proved true eventually.
