The rhyme states: "The pulse is soft and slow like willow branches in spring," which represents the spleen's pulse during the four seasons. Wang Shuhe was aware of this but did not elaborate on it. Generally, although the stomach pulse is characterized by being harmonious and slow, it is prized for being neither rapid nor hurried. When pressed deeply (Chen), the force should not be deficient; when lifted superficially (Fu), the pulse arrives softly and harmoniously, neither surging (Hong) nor turbid. This constitutes a complete pulse of the five zang organs. If the pulse is wiry (Xian) and urgent, and also surging with bony strength, it indicates invasion by liver heat pathogenic factors, leading to vomiting and reflux. If the pulse is wiry and tight, it indicates invasion by liver cold pathogenic factors, leading to undigested food diarrhea (Sun Xie). The rhyme further states: "A rapid spleen pulse causes vomiting." This is not due to spleen heat, but rather liver heat invading the spleen. Therefore, this formula for harmonizing the spirit is created. It requires the use of wind-dispelling herbs combined with stomach-harmonizing herbs. This formula is miraculous, but its efficacy is only realized when prescribed and administered correctly.
Heqiao Pi (Persimmon Sepal Peel, 1 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 2 liang of good quality), Huoxiang (Agastachis Herba), Bencao (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, each 1 fen), Genzi (Muxiang Radix, 7 zhu). Here, "Genzi" refers to small, round Muxiang selected for its strong aroma. All ingredients are powdered. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water, decoct until 0.8 zhan remains, remove dregs, and consume both liquid and dregs as desired. Shortly after ingestion, one may feel a sensation of hunger in the chest and diaphragm. If vomiting is caused by liver heat suppressing the spleen, accompanied by cracked lips, sticky mouth, red face, thirst with desire to drink, dark urine, coldness in the back and spine, chills resembling malaria, aversion to the smell of warm medicines, and a preference for cold water, add Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica, 2 qian), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 0.5 liang), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 1 fen), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, 3 zhu). Powder these together. Take 3 qian per dose, add 2 slices of Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), add 1 zhan of water, decoct until 0.7 zhan remains, and take. If diarrhea is caused by spleen dampness and cold, add Baixia (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 1 fen), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen), and Caodoukou (Buckwheat Fruit), each 0.5 liang. Process according to the above method. Generally, when using spleen-tonifying herbs, they must be combined with wind-dispelling herbs. Other modifications depend on the degree of wind pathogen at the time, ensuring no failure. Sores below the feet and knees are caused by lung qi failing to descend; thus, formulas that descend lung qi should be taken.
For a patient suffering from vomiting for half a month without relief, there is phlegm-fluid retention in the heart and diaphragm area. It is appropriate to use Tian Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) and other phlegm-resolving herbs to eliminate it. When water pathogen attacks heart qi, the *Suwen* states that attacking the heated area leads to death. One should use Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) to strengthen heart qi and overcome the pathogen. Symptoms include delirium, fever, joint pain, red face, protruding eyes (as if pulled out), and a sensation of the brain detaching.
White and turbid urine with dry mouth indicates excess earth qi suppressing kidney water. Using Zhike San (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Powder) to clear the spleen will bring peace. For hemorrhoids, fumigate with Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) and take Diaochang Wan internally. (Formula from *Lingyuan Fang*.)
