From Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) it transmits to Yangming (Yang Brightness), and from Yangming it transmits to Taiyang (Greater Yang). Taiyang represents the extreme of Yang, yet it subsequently turns into Yin; thus, Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) and Shaoyang are the pivots for the initial entry of Yin and Yang. The pivot is like the hinge of a door. However, Yin must follow Yang; therefore, the entry and exit of the Three Yin meridians (Taiyin, Shaoyin, Jueyin) also depend on Shaoyang. The disadvantage (stagnation/dysfunction) of Yin stems from the disadvantage of Yang; hence, Shaoyin takes Shaoyang as its master. To ensure the smooth operation of this pivot, warming therapy is indispensable. For cold causes firmness and coagulation, whereas heat promotes circulation. (Bingzhang notes: Clinging to the phrase "heat promotes circulation" leads to errors in all discussions. Shaoyin is the pivot of Yin, and Shaoyang is the pivot of Yang; how clear are the classic statements! Yet, due to the phrase "Yin must follow Yang," one falls into confusion, resulting in total error. This cannot serve as a model.) There are cases where there is heat but still no circulation. If there is no circulation, the opening and closing of entry and exit will not function as desired, leading to disease. If one can open but not close, diarrhea diseases are common; if one can close but not open, there is the risk of dysphagia, obstruction, and accumulation. When disease arises, if it harms the Pre-heaven Essence (Innate Constitution), it originates from the Kidney and Bladder; if it harms the Post-heaven Qi (Acquired Constitution), it originates from the Spleen and Stomach. Originating from the Spleen and Stomach, Earth fails to generate Metal, causing Metal to deteriorate; when Metal deteriorates, Water weakens; when Water weakens, Wood withers; when Wood withers, Fire blazes; when Fire blazes, Water dries up further; when Water dries up, Dragon Fire (Ministerial Fire arising from deficiency) rises; when Dragon Fire rises, Thunder Fire follows. With both Dragon and Thunder Fire rising, the entire body's Sanjiao (Triple Burner) and Zang-Fu organs become filled with Fire.
