Specializes in treating thirty-six types of throat disorders, and is applicable to all cases of鹅口疮 (thrush) and swelling.
*Hematoxylon campechianum* (Xuejie, 3 qian), *Alumen* (Baifan, 1 liang), *Mirabilite* (Mangxiao, 1 liang), *Boswellia carterii* gum resin (Ruxiang, 5 qian), *Myrrha* (Moyao, 5 qian), *Borax* (Pengsha, 5 qian), *Realgar* (Xionghuang, 3 qian), *Moschus* (Shexiang, 1 fen), *Borneolum Syntheticum* (Bingpian, 5 fen).
Grind all into a fine powder, weigh accurately, and add 1 fen of *Chalcanthite* (Danfan) per liang of powder. All ingredients are used raw and do not require processing.
The rhyme states: Xuejie and Xionghuang each 3 qian, Shexiang 1 fen; Ruxiang, Moyao, and Pengsha each 5 qian; Baifan and Mangxiao each 1 liang 1 fen, Danfan 1 fen; Bingpian 5 fen, ground into fine powder for use.
Treats toxic qi accumulation and constipation. Originally named Baihuang San, it is contraindicated for patients with diarrhea.
*Alumen* (Baifan, 5 qian), *Mirabilite* (Mangxiao, 3 qian), *Realgar* (Xionghuang, 3 qian), *Crotonis Fructus* (Badou, 1 qian, shelled and oil removed).
Grind into a fine powder. Based on the depth of the disease, mix 3 spoons with warm water and take orally. The goal is to promote bowel movements two or three times, adjusting usage according to the patient's deficiency or excess. Alternatively, refine honey to make pills the size of longan seeds, taken with warm water for immediate laxative effect.
The rhyme states: Baihuang Badou San, Badou oil removed 1 qian, Xionghuang and Mangxiao 3 qian each, Baifan half a liang; made into pills with refined honey, promoting unblocking leads to recovery.
Adjust dosage based on severity using the aforementioned Shenyao Mo (Divine Medicine Powder), adding 5 fen of Danfan. If pus is present, add 1 qian of *Ursi Fel* (Xiongdan). If the patient is critically ill with blocked throat orifices, use 1 qian; for mild cases, use 2-3 fen. If the patient is restless and delirious, add 5 fen of *Cinnabar* (Zhusha) and 5 fen of *Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam* (Zhuru) to ensure sleep.
Qiao Zi Dingfeng Zhen (Skillful Number Wind-Stabilizing Needles) focuses on bloodletting via needling, avoiding random insertion. Needle only when indicated, stop otherwise. Follow Fan Jiusi’s acupuncture methods, adapting to the depth of the disease for skillful treatment. For superficial or deficient conditions, accidental cure may occur, but unawareness of needle toxicity might cause harm. Decide whether to needle based on judgment. For thrush with yellow/white patches, puncture the head and apply Shenyao Mo to drain pus. If bleeding occurs, avoid random needling; use Zhenhou Mo (True Throat Powder) instead.
One condition involves sudden onset of single or double "Goose" (tonsillar enlargement) upon waking or after a few days. Mild obstruction worsens with heat, causing difficulty swallowing and locked jaw. Pick up one spoon of Shenyao Mo and place it inside the jawline, applying medication twice on both sides to resolve phlegm. After fifteen minutes, blow Shenyao Mo again, hold until dissolved in saliva. Swallow first portion, spit out second portion, repeat application three times. Assess internal condition. If sores are red and swollen, blowing Shenyao Mo alone will reduce swelling. If tidal fever and aversion to cold persist, urgently administer 3 spoons of Tongli San (Unblocking Laxative Powder) to purge, followed by several doses of Lianqiao Xiaodu Yin (Forsythia Detoxification Decoction). Take frequently regardless of time to neutralize toxins.
Lianqiao Xiaodu Yin
*Forsythiae Fructus* (Lianqiao, 1 qian), * Cimicifugae Rhizoma* (Shengma, 5 fen), *Saposhnikoviae Radix* (Fangfeng, 5 fen), *Schizonepetae Herba* (Jingjie, 4 fen), *Bombyx Batryticatus* (Jiangcan, 1 qian), *Scorpio* (Quanxie, 4 fen), *Arisaema cum Bile* (Niubangzi/Akebia? Note: Text says Niubang usually Arctii, here likely Arctii Fructus Niu Bang Zi, 5 fen), *Angelicae Dahuricae Radix* (Baizhi, 7 fen), *Phellodendri Cortex* (Huangbai, 1 qian), *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian, 1 qian), *Platycodonis Radix* (Jiegeng, 5 fen), *Menthae Haplocalycis Herba* (Bohe, 5 fen), *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* (Gancao, 5 fen).
Decoct in two bowls of water. (Bingzhang notes: If tongue tip is red, throat red/purple, pain worsens in afternoon, stool dry, despite fever, use acrid-cool dispersing method; Shengma, Fangfeng, Jiangcan, Niubang, Baizhi are contraindicated.) Add *Bupleuri Radix* (Chaihu, 7 fen) [Bing notes: Chaihu should be replaced with Sangye] and *Scutellariae Radix* (Huangqin, 7 fen) if there is heat. Add *Boswellia carterii* gum resin (Ruxiang, 3 fen) and *Myrrha* (Moyao, 3 fen) if pain persists. Add *Akebiae Caulis* (Mutong, 7 fen) and *Plantaginis Semen* (Cheqianzi, 7 fen) for urinary retention. Add *Pinelliae Tuber* (Banxia, 7 fen) and *Trichosanthis Fructus* (Gualou, 7 fen) for excessive phlegm.
Another condition involves internal throat "Goose" with irritability, fever, and aversion to cold, mouth feeling like millet husks, yellow sores eroding lips and tongue. Apply Shenyao Mo directly to the affected area; this indicates extreme toxic wind. It will resolve in 5-6 days. If pulse is floating and surging, use Baidu San (Toxin-Resolving Powder). If pulse is deep and solid, use Baihuang Tongli San (3 spoons). Floating/surging or deep/forceful pulses indicate no danger.
Baidu San
*Arisaema cum Bile* (Niubangzi, 7 fen), *Schizonepetae Herba* (Jingjie, 5 fen), *Scrophulariae Radix* (Yuanshen/Xuanshen, 1 qian), *Paeoniae Rubra* (Chishao, 5 fen), *Bupleuri Radix* (Chaihu, 5 fen), *Platycodonis Radix* (Jiegeng, 1 qian), *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* (Gancao, 5 fen), *Angelicae Dahuricae Radix* (Baizhi, 5 fen). [Bing notes: Chaihu, Jiegeng, Baizhi are acrid-warm and ascending, use with caution.]
If toxin is severe, add *Cimicifugae Rhizoma* (Shengma, 5 fen) and *Puerariae Lobatae Radix* (Gegen, 5 fen). If tidal fever, add *Sophorae Flavescentis Radix* (Kushen, 5 fen), *Scutellariae Radix* (Huangqin), *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian), *Saposhnikoviae Radix* (Fangfeng) (each 5 fen). If abdominal distension and restlessness with fever/constipation, add *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma* (Dahuang, 2 qian) and *Mirabilite* (Mangxiao, 1 qian), decoct together. Stop after 3-5 bowel movements. Do not restrict further intake unnecessarily.
One condition involves an extra tongue growing under the main tongue, resembling a lotus, called Lotus Tongue, Double Tongue, or Wooden Tongue. The tongue becomes large, long, and stiff. Apply Shenyao Mo. For severe cases, frequently wipe the tongue, instruct the patient to bite their tongue and expose it outside the teeth. Identify clearly, then use a Three-edged Needle to bleed from 4-5 paths, then apply Shenyao Mo to wipe the tongue. Two purple veins may appear; puncture them to bleed and blow Shenyao Mo. (Bingzhang notes: This condition stems from Liver/Kidney deficiency and Heart Fire hyperactivity; Ziyi Yingyang Tang would be faster.) Also, mix half a bowl of rice vinegar with Zhenhou Mo, hold in mouth, spit, repeat until resolved.
Zhenren Chuihou San (True Person Blowing Throat Powder)
*Borax* (Pengsha, 1 qian), *Aqua Stibitum Sulphuratam* (Han Shui Shi, 7 fen), *Realgar* (Xionghuang, 5 fen), *Borneolum Syntheticum* (Shang Bingpian, 6 li).
Grind fine, store for use. For foul-smelling throat ulcers, add 1 fen of Di Ji (ground beetle from under water vats, roasted on tiles), 5 li of *Moschus* (Shexiang), 7 li of *Bovis Calculus* (Niuhuang).
One condition is Bengsha Lou Chi Feng (Cracked Sand Leaking Tooth Wind), also with tidal fever. Use Shenyao Mo steamed with honey, apply and swallow, filling mouth with saliva, then spit. Decoct *Saposhnikoviae Radix* (Fangfeng), *Schizonepetae Herba* (Jingjie), *Angelicae Dahuricae Radix* (Baizhi) to wash the mouth and apply medication to the jawline to restore function. Wash the tongue to remove toxins. Harmless. If red flesh grows near teeth, remove Mangxiao and Baifan, add 1 qian Danfan, effective with Shenyao Mo. Use Baidu San internally or externally without harm. If abdominal fullness/tightness, use Tongli San. If purgation is contraindicated, use Lianqiao Xiaodu Yin. For pregnant women, use Shenyao Mo, do not swallow, only hold in mouth and spit. Adding Shex makes it safe to swallow.
One condition involves flesh growing inside the jaw covering teeth, preventing opening. Place Shenyao Mo on teeth to open the orifice, then puncture the flesh with a needle, apply Shenyao Mo to the wound for healing. If a red vein enters the jaw preventing opening, cut its root with a tile knife, wait for bleeding, then blow Shenyao Mo.
One condition is recurrent Houfeng (Throat Wind) occurring once or twice yearly. To eliminate the root, use Fan Jiusi’s acupuncture method: left side for men, right side for women, at 1 cun posterior to the base of the thumb. Moxibustion for 3 cones severs the root. Caution: Do not use this point lightly.
Guang notes: Shenyao Mo refers to Shen Zi Hao Yuhua San. Zhenhou Mo refers to Zhenren Chuihou San.
Mr. Zhou Shi said: The throat is the gateway for Qi respiration and the pathway for flavor transmission. Yan (swallowing) handles fluids; Hou (throat) monitors Qi entry/exit. Diseases arise from Wind, Accumulation, Phlegm, and Deficiency. Qi movement has smooth or reversed flows. External pathogens (Six Evils) and internal injuries (Seven Emotions, Diet) create excess or deficiency. Excessive emotions disturb the Mind (Shen), stirring Ministerial Fire, generating Phlegm and Qi stagnation. Fire transforms into Phlegm in the throat, causing Goose diseases, Plum Pit Qi, etc., triggered by external heat. Scholars must diagnose correctly and treat accordingly. Although names vary among thirty-six types, the four-character theory is appropriate. Misdiagnosis and reckless medication can turn mild cases severe, becoming incurable. Throat diseases are critical; do not neglect them. Save lives with care; accumulate merit. Act when appropriate, refrain when not; Heaven will bless you.
