Figure of the Year Dinghai
Jueyin Wind Wood governs the Heaven (Si Tian), Shaoyang Ministerial Fire governs the Earth (Zai Quan), and the Central Movement is Shaojiao Wood Movement. The Wood Qi of the year is insufficient, manifesting similarly to normal Wood movement; furthermore, because the Wood movement is insufficient and aligns with the Heavenly Transformation (the Five Element attribute of the Si Tian Qi), this is termed "Tian Fu" (Heavenly Symbol). The Qi transformation operates in accordance with the Heavenly Transformation, and the Wood Qi is precisely balanced, designated as the "Fu He Ji" (Era of Spreading Harmony). Yang expands, Yin distributes, and the transformations of the Five Elements are declared smooth and peaceful. Its Qi is upright, its nature is compliant, its function manifests as bending and straightening (growth and extension), and its transformation generates prosperity. Its administration is characterized by dispersion, its climate is mild and warm, its season commands Wind, its category corresponds to Grass and Trees, it corresponds to Spring, its grains are Hemp, its fruits are Plums, their pits are solid, its insects are Hairy ones (Mammals), its domestic animals are Dogs, its color is Cang (Green/Cyan), its taste is Sour, its musical note is Jue, its number is Eight, its objects have solid centers. In humans, its Zang organ is the Liver, it governs the Eyes, it nourishes the Sinews. Its diseases present as internal tension and flank fullness. This is the transformation of the Annual Movement.
The transformation of the Yearly Qi: Above, Jueyin Wind Wood is seen governing Heaven, the Left Intermittent Qi is Shaoyin Lordly Fire, and the Right Intermittent Qi is Taiyang Cold Water; thus, the Heavenly Qi is disturbed and its administration is chaotic. Below, Shaoyang Ministerial Fire is seen governing Earth, the Left Intermittent Qi is Yangming Dry Metal, and the Right Intermittent Qi is Taiyin Damp Earth; thus, the Earthly Qi is stable and its command is swift. Wind arises from high distances, heat follows it, clouds gather at the Rain Mansion, and Dampness transformation proceeds. Wind and Fire share the same virtue, corresponding above to Sui Xing (Jupiter) and Ying Huo Xing (Mars). Its grains are Cang (Green) and Dan (Red); the intermittent grains refer to those of Tai Shang (Metal Movement). Its depletion affects Wen Jiao (patterned horned animals) and Pin Yu (birds). Clear/Cold transformation and Hot transformation occur together as victory and revenge, representing the degree of pathogenic Qi transformation. The degree of Wind transformation is Three, and the degree of Fire transformation is Seven, which constitutes the standard degree. Hairy insects remain quiet, Feathered insects breed; these are suitable for the year's substances. Armored insects (shelled creatures) are depleted, and cold toxins do not generate; all these are constrained by Earthly Qi. Therefore, Wind, Dryness, and Hot/Fire alternate in victory and revenge. Hibernating insects appear, flowing water does not freeze. Heat diseases prevail in the lower part, Wind diseases prevail in the upper part, and the forms of Wind-Dryness victory and revenge manifest in the middle. In this year, Yin represents Heavenly Qi, and Yang represents Earthly Qi. Heavenly Qi is deficient, and the Wood Movement corresponds to it; moreover, Wood and Fire share the same virtue, making their Qi unified. They do not rely on the source of transformation but only assist the Wood Movement, preventing pathogenic Qi from overcoming healthy Qi. For the year, it is appropriate to use Pungent flavors to regulate the upper part and Salty flavors to regulate the lower part. One should fear the Qi of Fire and not rashly violate it. Thus, it is said that the transformation in the upper part uses Pungent-Cool, in the middle part uses Pungent-Harmonizing, and in the lower part uses Salty-Cold; this is suitable for medicines and foods.
Before the midpoint of the year, Heavenly Qi governs, distributing the administration of Jueyin, commanding Wind. After the midpoint of the year, Earthly Qi governs, executing the command of Shaoyang, transforming into Fire. This is the constant pattern of Qi transformation.
First Qi: From the Hai hour of the Great Cold day in the Bingxu year to the You hour of the Spring Equinox day in this year, totaling 60 days and 87.5 ke. The Host Position is Shaojiao Wood, the Guest Qi is Yangming Metal, and the Central Movement is Wood Movement. The Annual Movement occupies its proper position but is invaded by the dryness of the Guest Metal. Cold begins to肃杀 (cleanse and kill), and the killing Qi arrives. People suffer from cold in the lower right side. It is appropriate to regulate the Yangming Guest Qi: tonify with Sour, drain with Pungent, and discharge with Bitter. Annual grains should be Green (Cang), intermittent grains should be Millet (Shu), so that Dryness does not become pathogenic.
Second Qi: From the You hour of the Spring Equinox day to the Wei hour of the Grain Full day, totaling over 60 days. The Host Position is TaiZheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Taiyang Water, and the Central Movement is Wood Movement. Cold does not depart; flowers resemble snow, water freezes, the killing Qi implements transformation, frost descends, and the tops of famous grasses scorch. Cold rains arrive frequently, and Yang Qi resumes transformation. People suffer from heat in the middle. It is appropriate to regulate the Taiyang Guest Qi: tonify with Bitter, drain with Salty, firm with Bitter, and moisten with Pungent. Annual grains should be Green (Cang), intermittent grains should be Setaria (Ji), so that Cold does not become pathogenic.
Third Qi: From the Shen hour of the Grain Full day to the Wu hour of the Great Heat day, totaling over 60 days. The Host Position is TaiZheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Jueyin Wood, and the Central Movement is Wood Movement. The Movement coincides with Tian Fu. Heavenly administration spreads, and Wind rises at its time. People suffer from tearing, tinnitus, tremors, and dizziness. It is appropriate to regulate the Jueyin Guest Qi: tonify with Pungent, drain with Sour, and relax with Sweet. Annual grains should be Green (Cang), intermittent grains should be Rice, so that Wind does not become pathogenic. When using Warm remedies for this Qi, stay away from Warm times, and do not violate the Warmth of the Si Qi.
Fourth Qi: From the Wu hour of the Great Heat day to the Chen hour of the Autumn Equinox day, totaling over 60 days. The Host Position is Shaogong Earth, the Guest Qi is Shaoyin Fire, and the Central Movement is Wood Movement. Muggy heat and Dampness contend with each other in the upper left. People suffer from jaundice accompanied by swelling. It is appropriate to regulate the Shaoyin Guest Qi: tonify with Salty, drain with Sweet, and astringe with Sour. Annual grains should be Red (Dan), intermittent grains should be Beans, so that Heat does not become pathogenic.
Fifth Qi: From the Si hour of the Autumn Equinox day to the Mao hour of the Light Snow day, totaling over 60 days. The Host Position is Taisang Metal, the Guest Qi is Taiyin Earth, and the Central Movement is Wood Movement. Dryness and Dampness alternate in superiority. Deep Yin spreads, Cold Qi reaches the body, and wind and rain occur. It is appropriate to regulate the Taiyin Guest Qi: tonify with Sweet, drain with Bitter, and relax with Sweet. Annual grains should be Red (Dan), intermittent grains should be Hemp, so that Dampness does not become pathogenic.
Final Qi: From the Mao hour of the Light Snow day to the Chou hour of the Great Cold day, totaling over 60 days. The Host Position is Shaoyu Water, the Guest Qi is Shaoyang Fire, and the Central Movement is Wood Movement. Wood generates Fire. Feared Fire commands, Yang Qi greatly transforms. Hibernating insects appear, flowing water does not freeze, Earthly Qi erupts greatly, grass grows, and people feel comfortable. However, their disease is Wen Li (Warm Epidemic). It is appropriate to regulate the Shaoyang Guest Qi: tonify with Salty, drain with Sweet, [text incomplete in source]... Annual grains should be Red (Dan), intermittent grains should be Beans, so that Fire does not become pathogenic. This is the transformation of the Six Qi.
The year's movement is Balanced Wood. If there is pathogenic Qi, it strikes the Zhong Zhi Fa (referring to the Si Tian Qi). People suffer from sudden and abrupt diseases. The Classic states: "Those struck by Zhong Zhi Fa have diseases that are rapid and critical."
