Commentary states: When willpower is weak and the heart-mind is empty, with the spirit losing its residence, one may be offended by evil qi, causing sudden severe pain in the heart and abdomen, stupor and confusion resembling death, with no awareness. This is called Zhong E (Sudden Attack by Evil), also known as Zu Wu (Sudden Offense). It occurs because yin and yang are blocked, the qi mechanism is reversed, communication between upper and lower parts is obstructed, and yang qi is scattered, leading to loss of consciousness. If qi returns, life is preserved; if not, death ensues. If prolonged and unhealed, it transforms into Zhu disease (a type of infectious or lingering illness).
For treating Sudden Attack by Evil Qi, Guest Offense, Five Corpses entering the abdomen, Ghost Stabbing and Ghost Pushing, as well as Gu Poison Attack, hematemesis, hematochezia, sudden heart and abdominal pain, abdominal fullness with cold-heat toxic diseases, use the Beiji San (Emergency Rescue Powder) formula:
Xionghuang (Realgar, 2 liang, ground); Dansha (Cinnabar, 1 liang, ground); Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, 1 liang 1 fen, processed until cracked, skin and umbilicus removed); Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, bark removed); Lilu (Veratrum Nigrum Rhizome); Yuanhua (Genkwa Flower, stir-fried with vinegar, 4 qian); Badou (Croton Seed, processed separately into a paste-like consistency). [Note: Original text has missing quantities for some herbs].
Take the nine ingredients above. Process the Croton Seed separately into a paste. Grind the remaining ingredients into fine powder. Mix the Croton paste with the powder thoroughly. Store in a porcelain vessel, seal tightly to prevent leakage of qi. For emergencies, administer orally with water, approximately "yi zi" (a small measure), increasing up to half a "zhan bi". Reduce dosage for elderly and children. If the pathology is in the head, nasal bleeding may occur; if above the diaphragm, vomiting may occur; if below the diaphragm, diarrhea may occur; if in the limbs, sweating may occur leading to recovery.
For treating Heart-Mind Evil Pain, stabbing pain in chest and hypochondrium, and urgent panting, use the Taopi Tang (Peach Bark Decoction) formula:
Taodongxing Zhi Baipi (White Bark of Peach Branch Growing Eastward, chopped, one handful); Dansha (Cinnabar, 1 liang, ground); Zhizi Ren (Gardenia Seed, 14 pieces); Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, cut and dried, 3 liang); Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, bark removed). [Total eight ingredients].
Except for Cinnabar, chop the other ingredients to the size of hemp seeds and mix evenly. Take 5 qian bi per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water, add 0.5 fen of chopped fresh ginger, decoct until 0.7 zhan remains. Strain, add 0.5 qian bi of Cinnabar powder, and take warm.
For treating Sudden Attack by Evil causing stabbing pain in heart and abdomen, and expelling evil qi, use the Shexiang San (Musk Powder) formula:
Shexiang (Musk, 1 fen, ground); Xijiao Xie (Rhinoceros Horn Shavings); Muxiang (Costus Root, each 0.5 liang).
Grind and mix the three ingredients into a powder. Take 2 qian bi per dose, mix with boiled water on an empty stomach. Take twice daily. If symptoms persist, continue taking.
Another prescription:
Jiu Gen (Garlic Chive Root, one handful, chopped); Wumei (Dark Plum, 14 pieces, crushed); Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit, washed with hot water, dried, stir-fried, 2.5 liang).
Decoct the three ingredients in 5 sheng of rainwater. Place the patient's comb inside. After boiling three times, if the comb floats, the case is curable; if it sinks, it is fatal. Decoct until 3 sheng remains.
For treating Severe Heart-Mind Evil Abdominal Pain Desperate for Relief:
Fulonggan (Dragon's House Earth, 5 he); Yan (Salt, one pinch).
Mix and grind the two ingredients. Take 1 qian bi per dose, mix with 1 zhan of water.
For treating Sudden Attack by Evil with Urgent Panting, use the Taopi Tang (Peach Bark Decoction) formula:
Taopi (Peach Bark); Baiyangpi (Poplar Bark, each one handful); Zhizi Ren (Gardenia Seed, 14 pieces); Zhenzhu (Pearl, ground); Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, cut and dried); Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, bark removed, each 3 liang). [Total nine ingredients].
Except for Pearl powder, chop the other ingredients to the size of hemp seeds. Take 5 qian bi per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water, add a large piece of fresh ginger the size of a date, decoct until 1 zhan remains. Strain, add 0.5 qian bi of Pearl powder, mix well, and take warm.
For treating Dunshi (Stealth Corpse) caused by Sudden Attack by Evil, with pain in heart, abdomen, and body, severe cases presenting with shortness of breath and inability to speak. Pressing the painful area causes facial changes in the patient, who fears people approaching. Use the Aiye Fu (Mugwort Leaf Application) method:
Take fresh small Mugwort leaves, crush them, and apply thickly over the painful area, about 1 cun thick. Make a mud mixture with boiling water and ash, heat it, and apply over the mugwort. Replace when cool. No more than two applications are needed for recovery.
For treating Sudden Attack by Evil where Qi is about to cease and consciousness is lost:
Zaojiao (Tamarix Fruit) processed into fine powder, insufflated into the nostrils. Another method uses Xixin (Asarum) in equal parts, taken as flakes the size of a broad bean, insufflated into both nostrils.
For treating Sudden Attack by Evil where Qi is about to cease:
Extract juice from fresh cow dung and drink it. If fresh is unavailable, soak dry dung to extract juice and drink.
Another method:
Have the patient lie supine. Plug both ears with objects. Insert two bamboo tubes into the patient's nostrils. Have two people blow air into the tubes, ensuring no air escapes from the sides of the mouth. After half a day, if the patient belches ("yi yi"), stop blowing.
