Discussion states: Wind-stroke (Zhongfeng) and Cold damage (Shanghan) involve the three Yang meridians and the three Yin meridians, with distinct pulse patterns and symptoms. In Taiyang wind-stroke, the pulse is floating at the cun position and weak at the chi position; symptoms include fever and spontaneous sweating. This occurs because yang qi floating leads to spontaneous heat generation, while yin qi weakness leads to spontaneous sweating. Accompanying symptoms include aversion to cold, aversion to wind, fever, nasal congestion with roaring sound (Biming), and dry retching. It is also stated that in Taiyang disease, if there is fever, sweating, and a slow pulse, it is named wind-stroke. Moxibustion by burning (Fanjiu) should not be used. If fire therapy is employed to force sweating, the pathogenic wind is coerced by fire-heat, causing blood and qi to overflow, and the nutritive (Ying) and defensive (Wei) functions to become abnormal. The mutual scorching of two yangs (wind and fire) causes jaundice; excess yang leads to epistaxis, while yin deficiency leads to difficult urination. If both yin and yang are depleted, the body becomes dry and rough, with sweating only on the head up to the neck, abdominal fullness, slight wheezing, dry mouth, and rotting throat. There may be constipation; over time, delirium (Yuyu) may occur. Severe cases may present with hiccups (Hui), restlessness of hands and feet, and unconscious grasping at clothes and bed rails (Xunyimochuang). If urination is free, the condition is treatable.
Yangming wind-stroke refers to Yangming disease where the patient can eat. Symptoms include bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, abdominal fullness, slight fever, aversion to cold, and a floating or tight pulse. If purgation is used, it leads to abdominal fullness and difficult urination.
Shaoyang wind-stroke presents with deafness, red eyes, chest fullness with irritability. Emesis should not be induced; if done, it causes palpitations and fright.
Taiyin wind-stroke presents with painful heaviness in the four limbs. The pulse is faint at the cun position, choppy yet long at the chi position, indicating impending recovery.
Shaoyin wind-stroke has a faint pulse at the cun position and a floating pulse at the chi position, also indicating impending recovery.
Jueyin wind-stroke has a slightly floating pulse indicating impending recovery; if not floating, it indicates non-recovery. Generally, for these six-meridian wind-stroke diseases, although symptoms vary, the pulse is predominantly floating, as the classics state "floating indicates wind."
