Diagram of the Year Yi Hai
Jueyin Wind-Wood governs the Heaven (Si Tian), Shaoyang Minister-Fire governs the Earth (Zai Quan), and the Central Movement is Less Shang Metal. The Metal movement is insufficient, causing Qi transformation and physiological operations to lag behind the normal schedule. Its manifestations are identical to Zheng Jiao (Wood movement in excess), with all conditions being the same as a normal year, where Qi transformation and physiological operations conform to "Tong Tian" (Same Heaven). Jueyin Wind-Wood is positioned above (governing Heaven), with Shao Yin Minister-Fire as the left intercalary Qi and Tai Yang Cold-Water as the right intercalary Qi; thus, the Heavenly Qi is disturbed and its administration is chaotic. Shaoyang Minister-Fire is positioned below (governing Earth), with Yangming Dryness-Metal as the left intercalary Qi and Taiyin Dampness-Earth as the right intercalary Qi; thus, the Earthly Qi is upright and its commands are swift. Wind arises from high and distant places, followed by intense heat; clouds tend toward the Rain House, and Dampness transformation proceeds. Wind and Fire share the same virtue, corresponding above to Sui Xing (Jupiter) and Ying Huo (Mars). The corresponding grains are Cang (Green/Blue) and Dan (Red). The intercalary grains refer to those governed by Tai Gong (Earth) and Tai Yu (Water). Their depletion affects Jing Jiao (Wood) and Pin Yu (Water) categories. Wind, Dryness, Heat, and Fire alternate in victory and revenge. Hibernating insects appear, flowing water does not freeze. Heat diseases prevail in the lower part, Wind diseases prevail in the upper part, and the manifestations of Wind-Dryness victory and revenge occur in the middle. The victory and revenge of Heat transformation and Cold transformation are the same, referred to as the days of Evil Qi transformation. The number for Wind transformation is eight, for Clear transformation is four, and for Fire transformation is two; this is the standard degree of Zheng Hua. Hair-bearing creatures remain quiet, Feathered creatures breed; these are the organisms suitable for the year. Armored creatures suffer, Hair-bearing creatures do not breed, and Cold toxins do not generate; this is due to the restriction of Earthly Qi. However, Wood is Heavenly Qi, Fire is Earthly Qi, and Metal movement is in the middle. Earthly Qi overcomes the Movement, and Movement transformation overcomes Heavenly Qi, making their transformations impure. Heavenly Qi is deficient, Earthly Qi is abundant; one should nourish the Source of Transformation to assist Wood Qi, and simultaneously support the Annual Movement, preventing Evil from prevailing. Before the middle of the year, Heavenly Qi is governed by Jueyin. Jueyin transforms via its Central Qi (Less Shang Metal). At this time, if Wind transforms into Fire, it indicates the harmony of Heavenly Qi. If Wind prevails excessively, the sky becomes dusty and dim, clouds and objects are disturbed, Cold generates Spring Qi, flowing water does not freeze, and people suffer from pain in the epigastrium at the heart's location, radiating upward to support both hypochondria, obstruction of the diaphragm and pharynx, inability to swallow food, stiffness of the tongue root, vomiting after eating, cold diarrhea, abdominal distension, loose stools, masses, and water retention. The disease originates in the Spleen. Diagnosis focuses on the Chongyang pulse of the Foot. The treatment principle is to level with Pungent-Cool, assist with Bitter-Sweet, use Sweet to relax tension, and use Sour to drain. After the middle of the year, Earthly Qi is governed by Shaoyang. Shaoyang's transformation follows its Root (Fire). If Fire prevails internally, flames shine across the suburbs, cold and heat alternate, and people suffer from profuse discharge of red and white dysentery, lower abdominal pain, dark urine, and in severe cases, bloody stools. The treatment principle is to treat with Salty-Cold, assist with Bitter-Pungent, use Sour to astringe, and use Bitter to disperse. The Annual Movement of Metal is insufficient, termed Zhe Shou (Broken Harvest). The Gathering Qi is delayed, while the Growing Qi expands. Long-term Harmony Virtue prevails, Fire administration is proclaimed, and myriad creatures flourish. The Qi is expansive, its function is dry and cutting, and its transformation involves the unconquerable element. In summer, there is a command of luminous and stifling heat; in winter, there is a response of strict condensation and solemnity. If summer experiences scorching and burning changes, autumn will experience ice, hail, frost, and snow as revenge. The disaster occurs in the West. The disease resides internally in the chest, hypochondria, shoulders, and back, and externally in the skin and hair. Upon revenge, cold rain arrives suddenly, Yin rebellion and gridlock occur, Yang Qi reverses and ascends, causing pain in the back of the head extending to the fontanelle with fever, and in severe cases, heart pain. Treatment should use Sour to harmonize the center.
First Qi: From the Hai hour of the Great Cold day in the Jia Xu year to the You hour of the Spring Equinox day in this year, totaling 60 days and 87.5 ke. The Primary Position is Tai Jiao Wood, the Guest Qi is Yangming Metal, and the Central View is Metal Movement. Qi and Movement are identical, residing in the Wood position, interacting with Jueyin to execute Spring commands. Metal and Wood Qi are balanced. Cold begins to肃 (solemnize/restrict), and Killing Qi arrives. People suffer from cold in the lower right. It is appropriate to treat the Guest Qi of Yangming: tonify with Sour, drain with Pungent, and泄 (drain/discharge) with Bitter. Annual grain should be Green, intercalary grain should be Millet (Shu). In this Qi, the Governing Qi is Cool; use Cool without violating prohibitions.
Second Qi: From the You hour of the Spring Equinox day to the Wei hour of the Grain Full day, totaling over 60 days. The Primary Position is Shao Zheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Taiyang Water, and the Central View is Metal Movement. Metal and Water are compatible. Cold does not depart, flowers and snow turn to ice, Killing Qi implements transformation, frost descends, and the upper parts of name-grasses scorch. Cold rains arrive frequently, Yang Qi recovers and transforms. People suffer from Heat in the middle. It is appropriate to treat the Guest Qi of Taiyang: tonify with Bitter, drain with Salty, firm with Bitter, and moisten with Pungent. Annual grain should be Green, intercalary grain should be Foxtail Millet (Ji).
Third Qi: From the Shen hour of the Grain Full day to the Wu hour of the Great Heat day, totaling over 60 days. The Primary Position is Shao Zheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Jueyin Wood, and the Central View is Metal Movement. Fire overcomes Metal, Metal overcomes Wood, making the transformation impure. Heavenly Administration spreads, Wind rises at times. People suffer from tearing, tinnitus, dizziness, and vertigo. It is appropriate to treat the Guest Qi of Jueyin: tonify with Pungent, drain with Sour, and relax with Sweet. Annual grain should be Green, intercalary grain should be Rice.
Fourth Qi: From the Wu hour of the Great Heat day to the Chen hour of the Autumn Equinox day, totaling over 60 days. The Primary Position is Tai Gong Earth, the Guest Qi is Shaoyin Fire, and the Central View is Metal Movement. This coincides with the interaction of the Zai Quan Shaoyang. Muggy heat arrives, Dampness and Heat contend, fighting in the upper left. People suffer from jaundice and swelling. It is appropriate to treat the Guest Qi of Shaoyin: tonify with Salty, drain with Sweet, and astringe with Sour. Annual grain should be Red, intercalary grain should be Beans.
Fifth Qi: From the Si hour of the Autumn Equinox day to the Mao hour of the Light Snow day, totaling over 60 days. The Primary Position is Less Shang Metal, the Guest Qi is Taiyin Earth, and the Central View is Metal Movement. The Annual Metal Movement is in its proper place, harmonizing with Earth. Its transformation involves alternating dominance of Dryness and Dampness. Deep Yin spreads, Cold Qi reaches the body, wind and rain occur. It is appropriate to regulate the Guest Qi of Taiyin: tonify with Sweet, drain with Bitter, and relax with Sweet. Annual grain should be Red, intercalary grain should be Hemp seeds.
Final Qi: From the Mao hour of the Light Snow day to the Chou hour of the Great Cold day, totaling over 60 days. The Primary Position is Tai Yu Water, the Guest Qi is Shaoyang Fire, and the Central View is Metal Movement. Fearing Fire commands, Yang Qi greatly transforms. Hibernating insects appear. Flowing water does not freeze. Earthly Qi erupts, grass grows, and people feel comfortable, but they are prone to Warm Epidemics. It is appropriate to treat the Guest Qi of Shaoyang: tonify with Salty, drain with Sweet, and soften with Salty. Annual grain should be Red, intercalary grain should be Beans. This is the constant nature of the Six Qi.
Regarding the transformation of Annual Qi: When Heavenly Qi prevails, Yangming revenges; when Earthly Qi prevails, Taiyang revenges. Treatment should follow the respective laws of victory and revenge.
