It is stated that after childbirth, both Qi and Blood are deficient, making it easy for pathogenic factors to invade. These pathogens lodge between the skin and interstices (the spaces between skin and muscles), where they contend with healthy Qi, resulting in headache, body pain, fever, and aversion to cold. This constitutes the syndrome of postpartum cold damage (Shanghan). The formulas for inducing sweating (diaphoresis) or purging should be used with lighter dosages compared to those for ordinary people; one cannot apply a uniform standard.
For treating postpartum cold damage characterized by dizziness and pain in the head and eyes, body heat, and irritability: Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction)
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove coarse bark), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, remove root and nodes, boil and skim off foam, dry-roast), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, remove rhizome), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, remove sprouts), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma).
The above ten ingredients are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take three qianbi per dose, add one zhan of water, three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and two broken Zao (Jujubae Fructus). Decoct until seven parts remain, strain, and take warm at any time.
