Discussion states: Children's muscles are tender and fragile, making them susceptible to invasion by external pathogens. Thus, wind-cold pathogens contend with the muscles and coagulate in the qi and blood. This leads to skin chapping and cracking, which may develop into sores over time. The symptoms may include itching or pain, manifesting as swelling; upon rupture, pus exudes. These lesions commonly occur on both ears or between the hands and feet, hence termed "frostbite rotting sores" (Donglan Chuang).
To treat frostbite sores in children, Shujiao Decoction (Shu Jiao Tang):
Sichuan Pepper (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, remove eyes and closed ones, stir-fry until oil appears) Salt (each two liang)
Take the above two ingredients, decoct in five sheng of clear wine until reduced to two sheng. Dip frequently and apply; the medicine can be used for five to six days.
To treat frostbite rotting sores on the feet in children, Fuzi Powder (Fuzi San):
Aconite Root (Raw, crushed, two pieces) Dried Ginger (Pao Zhi, two liang)
Crush and sieve the above two ingredients into a powder. Place in cotton cloth to make socks. If there is pus from the sores, mix with pig lard rendered in the twelfth lunar month and apply.
To treat frostbite sores on the ears in children, characterized by itching or pain, Huangbai Powder Application (Huangbai San Tu Fang):
Phellodendron Bark (Huang Bo, remove coarse bark, heat-process and cut) Akebia Stem (Bai Lian, each half liang)
Crush and sieve the above two ingredients into a powder. First wash the sore with hot water, then blend with raw sesame oil and apply.
To treat frostbitten feet in children, characterized by itching or pain, Xiaomai Decoction (Xiao Mai Tang):
Wheat (Ban Sheng) Straw (Rang Cao, three handfuls, chopped)
Decoct the above two ingredients in one sheng of vinegar and two sheng of water until reduced to two sheng. Strain and let cool to warm temperature before washing the feet.
To treat chapped and painful hands in children due to cold, Bailian Powder (Bailian San Fang):
Akebia Stem (Bai Lian, two fen) Bletilla Tuber (Bai Ji, half liang) Raw Sesame Seeds (Sheng You Ma, two ge, raw and pounded)
Pound the Bai Lian and Bai Ji together, sieve into a powder, and grind evenly with oil. Add one steamed radish, pound thoroughly, and mix with wine to form a paste. First wash hands with urine from a young boy, then apply to the hands.
To treat frostbite on the ears and chapped, painful hands and face in children, Zhugao Ointment (Zhu Gao Fang):
Pig Fat (Zhu Gao, one set)
Grind the fat into an ointment consistency. Add a small amount of fermented rice water. When the consistency is appropriate, first wash the hands and face with urine from a young boy, then scoop a small amount with a spoon and spread evenly on the hands and face.
To treat frostbite sores in children where fingers or toes are about to fall off, and ears are about to detach, Baiye Ointment (Baiye Gao Fang):
Cypress Leaves (Bai Ye, heat-dry and powder, three liang) Apricot Seed (Xing Ren, twenty seeds, soak in hot water, remove skin and tips, pound separately into a paste) Sesame Oil (Ma You, three liang) Human Hair (Yi Tuan, size of a chicken egg) Salt (Yan, finely ground, one fen) Frankincense (Ru Xiang, finely ground, half fen) Beeswax (La, half liang)
Boil the oil and wax first, then add the other herbs. Continue until the hair dissolves. Stir well and store in a porcelain vessel. Before each use, wash the sore with urine, wrap fingers with cotton to dry, apply a thick layer of ointment, and cover with soft cloth. For areas where toes touch, apply more ointment, wrap with gauze, and then with thick cotton to prevent cold pathogen entry. Change medication every two days. Once slightly improved, change every three to four days.
