Chart of the Year Jiwei (Earth Ox)

Taiyin Shitai (Great Yin Damp Earth) governs the Si Tian (Heavenly Command), and Taiyang Hanshui (Great Yang Cold Water) governs the Zai Quan (Earthly Spring). The central movement is Shaogong Earth Movement. The year's Earth Qi is insufficient (Shaogong), sharing characteristics with Shang Gong (Excess) and Zheng Gong (Balanced). However, Shaogong is overlain by Taiyin Si Tian, which constitutes "Tian Fu" (Heavenal Harmony). Earth movement overlying the Chou (Ox) year constitutes "Sui Hui" (Annual Convergence). With Tian Fu above and Sui Hui below, the three harmonies combine for governance; this is a year of Taiyi and Tian Fu, where Qi arrives in balance. This is termed the "Ji of Complete Transformation" (Beihua Zhi Ji). Its Qi cooperates with Heaven's benevolence, its Virtue flows through the four directions, and the Five Transformations are cultivated together. Its Qi is balanced, its nature is compliant, its function operates high and low, its transformation is plump and full, its administration is quiet, its climate is humid and steaming, its command is dampness, its category is Earth, it corresponds to Late Summer, its grain is Ji (Millet), its fruit is Jujube, its flesh/meat, its creature is Luo (Naked/Scaleless), its livestock is Ox, its color is Yellow, its taste is Sweet, its object is Skin, its note is Gong (Pentatonic tone), its number is Five. In humans, it corresponds to the Spleen, governs the Mouth, nourishes Muscles, and its disease is Pi (Stagnation/Obstruction). This is the transformation of the Annual Movement.

Regarding the transformation of Annual Qi: Taiyin is above, Shaoyang is on the left, Shaoyin is on the right; thus, Earth Qi ascends and its administration is solemn. Taiyang is below, Jueyin is on the left, Yangming is on the right; thus, Heaven Qi descends and its command is silent. Yin dominates exclusively, Yang retreats. Great winds rise frequently, fields become dim, white dust rises everywhere, clouds rush to the South Pole, cold rains arrive often. Dampness and Cold combine their virtue, yellow-black dust becomes murky, circulating in the Qi intersection, corresponding above to Zhenxing (Saturn) and Chenxing (Mercury). Its grain is black (Xuan). Intercalary grains named Taishang and Taizheng mature in the difference between summer and autumn. Thus, Yin condenses above, Cold accumulates below. Cold Water overcoming Fire results in hail. Sunlight fails to govern, and killing Qi acts. Excess Qi favors high places, insufficient Qi favors low places; excess Qi manifests late, insufficient Qi manifests early. This is the benefit of Earth and the transformation of Qi. People's Qi follows this. Diseases include cold-damp abdominal fullness, body distension/swelling, edema, pi-ni (stagnation/reversal), cold jue (extremity cold), and spasms. Thus, it is said that Wind transformation and Clear transformation's victory and revenge are similar, and the degree of pathogenic Qi transformation is so. Rain transformation number is five, Cold transformation number is one; these are the degrees of proper transformation. Luo creatures are still, Scale creatures breed; this is suitable for annual matters. Feathered creatures diminish, heat toxins do not arise, because Earth Qi restricts them. In this year, Earth is above, Water is below; Earth overcomes Water, Heaven Qi is abundant. One should take the source of transformation. Meeting Taiyi Tianfu, Qi arrives in balance; without taking the source of transformation, one only needs to break the Water depression, benefit the Annual Victory, assist Yang Fire, allow resistance against severe cold, and prevent Pathogen from overcoming. Eat black grains to preserve True Qi; eat intercalary Qi grains to protect Essence. For the year, bitterness to dry and warmth to warm are suitable. Since Movement and Dampness are same, drying transformation is suitable. Thus, it is said: Upper transformation uses Bitter-Hot, Middle uses Sweet-Harmonizing, Lower uses Sweet-Hot; this is suitable for medicine and food. Before mid-year, administration is Damp; after mid-year, command is Cold.

First Qi: From Hai hour of Da Han day in Wuwu year to You hour of Chunfen day in this year, totaling 60 days and 87.5 ke. Principal position is Shaojiao Wood, Guest Qi is Jueyin Wood, central sees Earth Movement. Wood occupies its position. Earth Qi migrates, Cold departs, Spring Qi is correct, Wind comes, life spreads, all things flourish. People's Qi is smooth and comfortable. Wind and Damp contend, rain is delayed. People suffer blood overflow, tendon network stiffness, joint disadvantage, heavy body, tendon atrophy. Suitable to regulate Jueyin Guest with Pungent to tonify, Sour to drain, Sweet to relax. Annual grain should be black, intercalary grain should be Rice, then Wind does not become pathogen.

Second Qi: From You hour of Chunfen day to Wei hour of Xiaoman day, totaling 60+ days. Principal position is Taise Fire, Guest Qi is Shaoyin Fire, central sees Earth Movement. Great Fire is correct, things receive transformation, people are harmonious. Disease is warm plague prevalent, near and far alike. Damp steaming contends, rain descends timely. Suitable to regulate Shaoyin Guest with Salty to tonify, Sweet to drain, Sour to gather. Annual grain should be black, intercalary grain should be Beans, then Heat does not become pathogen.

Third Qi: From Shen hour of Xiaoman day to Wu hour of Dashu day, totaling 60+ days. Principal position is Taise Fire, Guest Qi is Taiyin Earth, central sees Earth Movement. Qi matches Movement and proceeds as Balanced Qi. Heavenly administration spreads, Damp Qi descends, Earth Qi ascends, rain descends timely, Cold follows. Contracting Cold-Damp leads to heavy body, edema, chest/abdominal fullness. Suitable to regulate Taiyin Guest with Sweet to tonify, Bitter to drain, Sweet to relax. Annual grain should be black, intercalary grain should be Hemp, then Damp does not become pathogen. Do not violate Si Qi during this period.

Fourth Qi: From Wu hour of Dashu day to Chen hour of Qiufen day, totaling 60+ days. Principal position is Shaogong Earth, Guest Qi is Shaoyang Fire, central sees Earth Movement. Annual Movement obtains position, Minister Fire resides there. Fearful Fire arrives, humid-steam transforms, Earth Qi ascends, Heaven Qi is blocked. Cold wind blows morning and evening, steam-heat contends, grass/trees condense smoke, Damp transformation does not flow. Then White Dew spreads yin to complete Autumn command. People suffer pore heat, sudden blood overflow, malaria, heart/abdominal fullness, hot distension, even edema. Suitable to regulate Shaoyang Guest with Salty to tonify, Sweet to drain, Salty to firm. Annual grain should be black, intercalary grain should be Beans, then Fire does not become pathogen.

Fifth Qi: From Si hour of Qiufen day to Mao hour of Xiaoxue day, totaling 60+ days. Principal position is Taishang Metal, Guest Qi is Yangming Metal, central sees Earth Movement. Earth generates Metal, Metal obtains position. Severe command has acted, Cold Dew descends, Frost descends early, grass/trees yellow/fall, Cold Qi reaches body. Gentlemen are careful, people suffer skin/pore issues. Suitable to regulate Yangming Guest with Sour to tonify, Pungent to drain, Bitter to vent. Annual grain should be black, intercalary grain should be Glutinous Millet, then Dryness does not become pathogen.

Final Qi: From Mao hour of Xiaoxue day to Chou hour of Da Han day, totaling 60+ days. Principal position is Shaoyu Water, Guest Qi is Taiyang Water, central sees Earth Movement. Water occupies position, Damp Earth combines Qi. Cold rises greatly, Damp transforms greatly. Frost accumulates, Yin congeals, Water hardens into ice, Sunlight fails to govern. Contracting Cold leads to patients with joint immobility, waist pain. Cold-Damp persists in Qi intersection causing disease. Suitable to regulate Taiyang Guest with Bitter to tonify, Salty to drain, Bitter to firm, Pungent to moisten. Annual grain should be black, intercalary grain should be Ji (Millet), then Cold does not become pathogen. This is the transformation of the Six Qi.

Transformation of Qi Intersection: If there is Annual Water Depression, treatment should break it. Follow the winning Qi, stabilize the suppressed, regardless of number, aiming for balance. This is the Way.
