Figure of the Year Wushen (Wu Shen)

Shaoyang Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire) governs the Heaven (Si Tian), Jueyin Fengmu (Wind-Wood) governs the Earth (Zai Quan), and the middle interaction is Tai Zheng (Excessive Fire Movement). The year's fire is excessive, and its qi transformation operates ahead of time. Tai Zheng (Excessive Fire) descends upon Shaoyang; the excessive nature coincides with the heavenly transformation, which is called "Tian Fu" (Heavenly符/Alignment), resulting in a relatively balanced qi. The fire qi is just right, termed the "Shengming" (Ascending Brightness) pattern. Correct Yang governs, virtue spreads universally, and the five transformations are balanced. Its qi is lofty, its nature swift, its function like burning and scorching, its transformation abundant and flourishing, its administration bright and shining, its climate hot and summer-like, its command heat, its category fire, its correspondence summer, its grains wheat, its fruits apricots, its solids net-like (referring to fruit structure), its insects feathered (birds), its animals horses, its colors red, its flavors bitter, its tissues vessels, its notes Zhi (徵), its number seven. In humans: its zang organ is the Heart, its orifice is the tongue, it nourishes blood, and its disease manifests as convulsions (Chizhong). This is the transformation of the annual movement.

Regarding heaven and earth qi: Fire transformation is above, with left Clear transformation and right Soft transformation, so heavenly qi is upright and its administration strict; Acid transformation is below, with left Scorching transformation and right Storage transformation, so earthly qi is disturbed and its command chaotic. Wind rises suddenly, trees fall and sand flies, flames flow, yin moves within yang and transforms, rain falls on time. Fire and Wood share virtue, corresponding above to Huoxing (Mars/Yinghuo) and Suixing (Jupiter/Suixing). Its grains are red and green/blue. The proportion of annual qi transformation is Fire 7, Wind 3, which is the degree of correct transformation. Feathered insects remain quiet, hairy insects breed, which is suitable for the year's produce. Insects are consumed, clear toxins do not arise, because earthly qi restrains them.

Before the midpoint of the year, heavenly qi governs. Its qi is Shaoyang Ministerial Fire, its command is warmth, which is the administration of Shaoyang. After the midpoint of the year, earthly qi governs. Its qi is Jueyin Wind-Wood, its command is wind. Wind and heat mix, clouds and things boil, Taiyin dampness flows horizontally, cold arrives on time, cool rains rise together. People suffer from Cold Middle (Spleen-Stomach deficiency cold), external eruptions and sores, internal diarrhea and fullness. Sages encountering this situation adopt harmony without contention. Due to the recurrence of qi movements, people suffer from cold-heat alternations, malaria, diarrhea, deafness, dim vision, vomiting, upper stagnation swelling, and color changes. In this year, Yang represents heavenly qi, Yin represents earthly qi. Wind and Fire meet, their qi is concentrated, and their transformation is pure. Furthermore, the Fire Movement dominates. The movement aligns with Tian Fu, Fire transforms into Shengming, heavenly qi is full. Treatment should first target the source of transformation, suppress the excessive Fire Movement, and assist Metal qi. Thus, violent diseases will not arise, and harsh diseases will not occur. Medicines and foods should be salty, pungent, and sour. Methods include draining, purging, soaking, and sweating. Observe the cold and warm nature of the qi to regulate excess. Since the movement combines with wind and heat, cold transformations should be used more. Upper transformation uses salty-cold, middle uses sweet-neutral to harmonize, lower uses pungent-cool. This is suitable for medicines and foods.

First Qi period: From Yin hour of the Great Cold day in Dingwei year to Zi hour of the Spring Equinox day in this year, totaling 60 days and 87.5 ke. The principal position is Shao Jiao (Wood), the guest qi is Shaoyin Ministerial Fire, and the middle interaction is Fire Movement. Qi and movement are identical. Ministerial Fire does not solely govern qi transformation. Earthly qi migrates, wind prevails causing shaking, cold departs, climate becomes very warm, grass and trees flourish early. Cold cannot suppress warmth, so warm diseases arise. Symptoms include qi stagnation above, blood effusion, red eyes, cough and reversal, headache, hypochondriac fullness, sores in skin and pores. It is appropriate to adjust the Shaoyin guest qi: tonify with salty, drain with sweet, astringe with sour. Annual grain should be red-colored, inter-grain should be beans, so heat does not become pathogenic.

Second Qi period: From Zi hour of the Spring Equinox day to Xu hour of the Grain Full day, totaling over 60 days. The principal position is Tai Zheng (Fire), the guest qi is Taiyin Damp-Earth, and the middle interaction is Fire Movement. Dampness acts as the guest, fire is instead depressed. White haze rises everywhere, clouds move toward the rain repository. Wind cannot overcome dampness, rain falls. People are healthy. Symptoms include heat depression above, cough and reversal, vomiting, sores in the middle, chest and throat obstruction, headache, body heat, dizziness, and suppurative sores. It is appropriate to adjust the Taiyin guest qi: tonify with sweet, drain with bitter, soothe with sweet. Annual grain should be red-colored, inter-grain should be sesame, so dampness does not become pathogenic.

Third Qi period: From Hai hour of the Grain Full day to You hour of the Great Heat day, totaling over 60 days. The principal position is Tai Zheng (Fire), the guest qi is Shaoyang Ministerial Fire, and the middle interaction is Fire Movement. Qi aligns with Heaven, and heavenly administration spreads. Intense heat and summer arrive, Shaoyang is above, rain ceases. People suffer from heat in the middle, deafness, dim vision, blood effusion, suppurative sores, cough, vomiting, rhinitis, epistaxis, thirst, sneezing, yawning, throat bi, red eyes, and sudden death. Since the year's fire is balanced, the evil is slight. It is appropriate to adjust the Shaoyang guest qi: tonify with salty, drain with sweet, [soften] with salty. Annual grain should be red-colored, inter-grain should be beans, so fire does not become pathogenic. In this qi, avoid using hot remedies when heat is dominant, and do not violate the heat of the governing qi.

Fourth Qi period: From You hour of the Great Heat day to Wei hour of the Autumn Equinox day, totaling over 60 days. The principal position is Shao Gong (Earth), the guest qi is Yangming Dry-Metal, and the middle interaction is Fire Movement. Earth generates Metal, coolness arrives, intense heat alternates with transformation into coolness, white dew descends. People's qi is peaceful. Symptoms include heaviness of the whole body. It is appropriate to adjust the Yangming guest qi: tonify with sour, drain with pungent, drain with bitter. Annual grain should be green/black-colored, inter-grain should be millet, so dryness does not become pathogenic.

Fifth Qi period: From Shen hour of the Autumn Equinox day to Wu hour of the Light Snow day, totaling over 60 days. The principal position is Tai Shang (Metal), the guest qi is Taiyang Cold-Water, and the middle interaction is Fire Movement. Fire overcomes Metal, Water restrains it. Yang departs, cold arrives, rain descends, pore gates close, rigid trees wither early. People avoid cold pathogens, gentlemen take careful precautions. It is appropriate to adjust the Taiyang guest qi: tonify with bitter, drain with salty, firm with bitter, moisten with pungent. Annual grain should be green/black-colored, inter-grain should be broomcorn millet, so cold does not become pathogenic.

Final Qi period: From Wu hour of the Light Snow day to Chen hour of the Great Cold day, totaling over 60 days. The principal position is Shao Yu (Water), the guest qi is Jueyin Wind-Wood, and the middle interaction is Fire Movement. Water generates Wood, earthly qi is correct, wind arrives, all things regenerate, fog and mist circulate. Symptoms include closure dysfunction (incontinence or retention), uncontrolled heart pain, cough due to non-storage of Yang qi. It is appropriate to adjust the Jueyin guest qi: tonify with pungent, drain with sour, soothe with sweet. Annual grain should be green/black-colored, inter-grain should be rice, so wind does not become pathogenic. This is the transformation of the Six Qi.

When the annual qi aligns with Tian Fu, it is called "Zhifa" (Law Enforcement). If pathogenic qi invades, people will suffer from sudden and urgent diseases. This is referred to as "evil striking Zhifa," where people's diseases are rapid and dangerous.
