Commentary states: The Yellow Emperor asked, "When a person is born with epilepsy (dianji), from where does it originate?" Qibo replied, "This originates while in the mother's womb. If the mother suffers a great fright, the qi ascends and fails to descend, causing essence and qi to congregate above, thereby causing the child to develop epilepsy. The disease affects the Yang meridians, presenting with alternating cold and heat in the body and in the intermuscular spaces; this condition is named Kuang (Mania). Acupuncture should be performed to reduce the pulse; when the intermuscular spaces are thoroughly warmed, the disease ceases, and needling should stop.

When Dianji first begins, it occurs once a year; if untreated, it occurs monthly; if still untreated, it occurs every four or five days; this is named Dianji. Needle the intermuscular spaces. For those whose pulses are particularly cold, use the tonification method with needles; stop when the disease resolves.

When Dianji initially manifests, the patient first experiences dissatisfaction, heavy head and pain, fixed staring gaze, red eyes, extreme exhaustion at its peak, followed by vexation and heart discomfort. Observe the face (Yan); select points from the Hand Taiyang, Hand Yangming, and Hand Taiyin meridians. Stop bleeding when the blood color changes.

When Dianji first starts, the body may stiffen and arch backward, resulting in spinal pain. Observe the Foot Taiyang, Foot Yangming, Foot Taiyin, and Hand Taiyang meridians. Stop bleeding when the blood color changes.

When Dianji begins with mouth traction and crying/shouting (Jiayi Jing reads as panting and palpitations), observe the Hand Yangming and Hand Taiyang meridians. If rigidity is on the right, treat the left; if on the left, treat the right. Stop bleeding when the blood color changes.

Those treating Dianji should reside frequently with the patient to observe the appropriate acupuncture sites. When the disease strikes, identify areas of excess and drain them. Place the extracted blood into a gourd vessel. At the time of recurrence, observe if the blood in that specific area throbs independently. If it does not throb, moxa 20 cones at Qionggu (the coccyx). Qionggu refers to the coccyx.

In cases of Jindianji (Sinew Epilepsy), the body curls and contracts tightly, and the pulse is large. Needle the Da Shu (BL11) point along the major meridians of the neck. If there is excessive vomiting of saliva and froth, and Qi leaks downward, it is incurable.

In cases of Maidianji (Pulse Epilepsy), the patient suddenly collapses, and the pulses in the four limbs are distended and flaccid, with full pulses. Prick all affected vessels to bleed. If the pulse is not full, moxa the Taiyang meridian along the neck, and also moxa the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel) at the waist, three cun lateral to the midline. If there is excessive vomiting of saliva and froth, and Qi leaks downward, it is incurable.

For sudden onset of Dianji, moxa both nipples 3 cones each, then moxa the hairy region at the root of the big toe 7 cones, and moxa the proximal joint of the little toe 7 cones.

For adult Dianji or pediatric Jingxian (Startle Epilepsy), moxa below the second thoracic vertebra on the back, and below at the Qionggu. Measure the midpoint with a string and break it at one end; this marks the spinal bone. After marking these three locations, break the string again into three equal parts to form a 'Y' shape. Place one corner at the center and moxa the two corners flanking the spine on either side.

These constitute five locations, each receiving 100 cones. Using bamboo skin for measurement is superior to using string.

Also moxa the hairy region above the big toe 7 cones.

Also moxa the seam below the scrotum 14 cones (2 x 7).

Also moxa both nipples 3 cones each.

Also moxa the Du Meridian 30 cones, administered three times daily. The acupoint is located directly above the nose, entering the hairline.

Also moxa Tianchuang (SI16) and Baihui (GV20), gradually increasing to 300 cones each, using only small moxa cones.

Also moxa the hairline above the ears, 50 cones each.
