Discussion states: There are two types of toothache. When the Hand-Yangming meridian is deficient and wind-cold pathogenic factors invade causing pain, it is called Wind Toothache (Feng Tong). When parasites reside in the tooth roots, continuously eroding and transmitting to other teeth causing pain, it is called Parasitic Toothache (Chong Tong). The etiologies of these two differ. Ancient prescriptions include topical applications, mouthwashes, and cleansing agents; treatments for wind pathogens and removal of parasites each have their specific methods.
