Figure of the Qi of Guisi Year
Jueyin Wind-Wood governs the Heaven (Si Tian), Shaoyang Minister-Fire governs the Earth (Zai Quan). The annual movement is Shao Zheng (Insufficient Fire Movement), belonging to a year of insufficient Fire. The transformation and operation of Qi lag behind the heavenly timing. The Fire Qi corresponds to the Earthly Transformation (Tong Tian). Due to insufficient Fire movement combined with "Tong Sui Hui" (Same Year Meeting), the climate becomes balanced.
In years identical to the standard year, the transformation and operation synchronize with the Heavenly Stems. This is a year of balanced Fire, named "Sheng Ming Zhi Ji" (The Principle of Ascending Brightness). Its righteous Qi presides, bestowing grace universally, ensuring the balance of the Five Transformations. Its Qi is lofty, its nature rapid, its function like burning and scorching, its transformation abundant and flourishing, its administration bright and shining, its climate hot and summer-like, its command is Heat, its category is Fire, it corresponds to Summer, its grains are Wheat, its fruits are Apricots, its solids are "Luo", its insects are Feathered, its animals are Horses, its color is Red, its taste is Bitter, its body part is Pulse, its musical note is Zhi, and its number is Seven. In humans, it corresponds to the Heart organ, governs the Tongue, nourishes Blood, and its disease manifests as convulsions (Chi Song). This is the transformation of the annual movement.
Heavenly and Earthly Qi: Wind transformation is above, Scorching transformation is on the left, Organ transformation is on the right, Bitter transformation is below, Clear/Cool transformation is on the left, Cold transformation is on the right. Thus, Heavenly Qi disturbs and its administration is chaotic; Earthly Qi is upright and its command is swift. Wind arises from high distances, Heat follows it; Clouds tend toward the Rain Mansion, Humid transformation proceeds. Wind and Fire share the same virtue, corresponding above to Jupiter (Sui Xing) and Mars (Ying Huo). The corresponding grains are Cang (Green/Black) and Dan (Red). The inter-grains refer to those governed by Tai Gong (Earth) and Tai Yu (Water). Their depletion affects items associated with Jue (Wood) and Yu (Water) sounds. The degrees of Cold and Rain transformations in victory and revenge are the same, representing the degree of pathogenic transformation. The degree of Wind transformation is Eight, and the degree of Fire transformation is Two, which constitutes the degree of correct transformation.
The suitability of annual substances dictates that Woolly insects remain quiet, while Feathered insects breed, constrained by Earthly Qi; Armored insects suffer depletion, and Cold toxins do not generate. Wind, Dryness, and Fire alternate in victory and revenge. Hibernating insects appear, flowing water does not freeze. Heat diseases prevail in the lower parts, Wind diseases prevail in the upper parts, and the forms of Wind-Dryness victory and revenge manifest in the middle. In this year, Yin represents Heavenly Qi, and Yang represents Earthly Qi. Heavenly Qi is deficient, and Fire movement is appropriately balanced, not assisting the source of transformation but only aiding the Fire movement, preventing pathogenic Qi from prevailing. For the year, it is suitable to use Pungent flavors to regulate the upper part and Salty flavors to regulate the lower part. One should fear the Qi of Fire and avoid reckless interference. The therapeutic transformation for the upper part should be Pungent-Cool, the middle part Salty-Harmonious, and the lower part Salty-Cold; this is appropriate for medicines and foods.
Before the midpoint of the year, Jueyin presides. Wherever Jueyin arrives, its command is Wind. When Wind transformation prevails at this time, it is the administration of Heaven. After the midpoint of the year, Shaoyang presides. Wherever Shaoyang arrives, its command is Fire. When Fire transformation prevails at this time, it is the command of Earth.
First Qi Period: From Si Chu (early Si hour) of Da Han (Great Cold) day in Ren Chen year to Mao Chu (early Mao hour) of Chun Fen (Spring Equinox) day in this year, totaling 60 days and 87.5 ke. The Main Position is Tai Jue (Wood), the Guest Qi is Yangming Metal, and the Middle reveals Fire movement. Cold begins to肃 (solemnize/clear), and Killing Qi arrives. People may suffer from cold in the lower right. Since the operating Fire is balanced, the pathogen becomes slight. It is suitable to regulate the Yangming Guest Qi: tonify with Sour, drain with Pungent, and drain with Bitter. Annual grains should be Cang (Green), and inter-grains should be Millet (Shu).
Second Qi Period: From Mao Zheng (mid-Mao hour) of Chun Fen to Chou Zheng (mid-Chou hour) of Xiao Man (Grain Full), totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Shao Zheng (Fire), the Guest Qi is Taiyang Water, and the Middle reveals Fire movement. Fire occupies its position, and Cold Water succeeds it. If Cold does not depart, flowers and snow turn to ice, Killing Qi exerts its transformation, frost descends, and nameless grasses wither and scorch. Cold rains arrive frequently, Yang returns to transformation, and people may suffer from heat in the middle. It is suitable to regulate the Taiyang Guest Qi: tonify with Bitter, drain with Salty, firm with Bitter, and moisten with Pungent. Annual grains should be Cang (Green), and inter-grains should be Setaria (Ji).
Third Qi Period: From Yin Chu (early Yin hour) of Xiao Man to Zi Chu (early Zi hour) of Da Shu (Great Heat), totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Shao Zheng (Fire), the Guest Qi is Jueyin Wood, and the Middle reveals Fire movement. Fire occupies its position, and Wind-Wood acts as the guest. Heavenly administration spreads, and Wind rises intermittently. People may suffer from tearing, tinnitus, tremors, and dizziness. It is suitable to regulate the Jueyin Guest Qi: tonify with Pungent, drain with Sour, and relax with Sweet. Annual grains should be Cang (Green), and inter-grains should be Rice.
Fourth Qi Period: From Zi Zheng (mid-Zi hour) of Da Shu to Xu Zheng (mid-Xu hour) of Qiu Fen (Autumn Equinox), totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Tai Gong (Earth), the Guest Qi is Shaoyin Fire, and the Middle reveals Fire movement. Qi and Movement are the same, residing in Scorching transformation. Damp-Heat contend with each other in the upper left. People may suffer from jaundice accompanied by edema. It is suitable to regulate the Shaoyin Guest Qi: tonify with Salty, drain with Sweet, and astringe with Sour. Annual grains should be Dan (Red), and inter-grains should be Beans.
Fifth Qi Period: From Hai Chu (early Hai hour) of Qiu Fen to You Chu (early You hour) of Xiao Xue (Minor Snow), totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Shao Shang (Metal), the Guest Qi is Taiyin Earth, and the Middle reveals Fire movement. Fire generates Earth, Dryness and Dampness alternate in victory, deep Yin clouds spread, Cold Qi reaches the body, and wind and rain occur. It is suitable to regulate the Taiyin Guest Qi: tonify with Sweet, drain with Bitter, and relax with Sweet. Annual grains should be Dan (Red), and inter-grains should be Sesame.
Sixth Qi Period (Final Qi): From You Zheng (mid-You hour) of Xiao Xue to Wei Zheng (mid-Wei hour) of Da Han, totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Tai Yu (Water), the Guest Qi is Shaoyang Fire, and the Middle reveals Fire movement. Fire Qi coincides, and Feared Fire (Shaoyang Minister-Fire) commands. Yang Qi transforms greatly, hibernating insects appear, flowing water does not freeze, Earthly Qi erupts, grasses grow, and people feel comfortable. However, their diseases are warm epidemics. It is suitable to regulate the Shaoyang Guest Qi: tonify with Salty, drain with Sweet, and [text missing] with Salty. Annual grains should be Dan (Red), and inter-grains should be Beans. In this Qi, the governing Qi is Heat; using Hot remedies without violation is called "Avoid Heat when using Heat."
The transformation of annual Qi is pure and thick. Encountering balanced Fire Qi again is called "Executing Commands." If pathogens take advantage, the disease persists. Therefore, the classics state: "Those who execute commands have diseases that are slow and lingering."
