Commentary states: The syndrome of Stone Abscess (Shiju) is identical to that of Stone Carbuncle (Shiyong), but the pathology lies deeper. It arises from cold pathogenic factors invading the meridians, causing Qi and Blood to coagulate and accumulate without dispersing, hiding within the skin. In treating Stone Abscess, if the mass is hard, the skin color is deep red, accompanied by aversion to cold and high fever, and pus has not formed after one or two days, purgation should be employed. Shengma Decoction (Cimicifugae Rhizoma Decoction): Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), Isatidis Folium (Daqing), Rheum Palmatum Rhizoma et Radix (Dahuang - crushed and lightly stir-fried, each 1 liang), Patriniae Herba (Baijiang), Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis (Luoshi), Ampelopsis Radix (Bailian), each half liang; Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdihuang) 2 liang. The above nine herbs are crushed to the size of hemp seeds. Each dose consists of 5 qianbi (approx. 15-20g depending on era/measure), boiled in 1.5 sheng of water until reduced to 0.7 sheng. Add Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao) 1 qian, strain, and take warm on an empty stomach. Mild diarrhea of two or three movements indicates efficacy; if no movement occurs, administer again.
For treating Stone Abscess with hard nodules, whether ulcerated or not, or where the carbuncle has fully formed: Zhansi San (Wooden Zhansi Powder): Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Muzhansi), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo - coarse bark removed, stir-fried with ginger juice), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shenggandi Huang - baked), Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou - dried, peeled), Patriniae Herba (Baijiang), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng - forked roots removed). The above ten herbs are pounded, sifted into a powder. Each dose is 2 qianbi, taken with warm wine before meals.
For treating Stone Abscess with swollen, toxic, hard masses, dry mouth, vexing heat, spasm and tightness of the four limbs, and inability to lie down: Chenxiang Decoction (Aquilariae Wood Decoction): Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng - forked roots removed), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), each 3 fen; Phellodendri Cortex (Digupi), Ophiopogonis Tuber (Maimendong - heart removed, baked), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui - sliced and baked), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin - *Note: Text says 'Huang', context implies Scutellaria or similar heat-clearing herb*) (crushed and stir-fried). The above fourteen herbs (text lists fewer, likely missing some due to manuscript loss) are coarsely crushed and sieved. Each dose is 4 qianbi, boiled in 1.5 sheng of water until reduced to 0.7 sheng. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating Stone Abscess that remains hard and does not dissipate: Dihuang Jian (Rehmannia Paste): Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdihuang) 3 jin (washed clean). The single herb is crushed, finely ground, and juice is extracted by pressing through cloth. The juice is placed in a copper vessel and boiled over water (double-boiled). Stir evenly with a willow stick until it resembles sugar paste. Store in a porcelain jar. On an empty stomach daily, take a pill the size of a bullet, taken with warm wine. Take again at noon and evening for recovery.
For treating carbuncles that erupt, becoming hard like stone kernels and enlarging, with unchanged skin color: Lujiao San (Deer Horn Powder): Cornu Cervi Dissolutum (Lujiao - calcined, 2 liang), Ampelopsis Radix (Bailian, 1 liang), Coarse-textured Yellow Stone (Huangshi) 5 liang (calcined until red, quenched in vinegar, repeated seven times). The above three ingredients are pounded and sifted into a powder. Mix with strong vinegar to form a paste. Apply to the swelling. Reapply when dry. Continue until healed.
For treating Stone Abscess, hard as stone, without pus formation: Shanglu Gen Tie (Phytolaccae Radix Paster): Phytolaccae Radix (Shanglu Gen) 0.5 jin. The single herb is pounded thoroughly into a mud-like consistency. Apply on old cloth as a plaster. Change when dry.
For treating Stone Abscess resembling acne or furuncles but with thick skin: Chushi Tu (Torreya Seed Application): Torreya Seed (Chushi) (quantity unspecified). The single herb is pounded and sifted into powder. Mix with vinegar to form a paste. Apply to the affected area. Change when dry.
For treating Stone Abscess that is hard, with purple-red skin, aversion to cold, and high fever, where pus has not formed after one or two days; suitable for use after purgation: Muxiang San Tie (Aucklandia Powder Plaster): Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), Rheum Palmatum Rhizoma et Radix (Dahuang - raw), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Ampelopsis Radix (Bailian), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao), Phaseoli Semen Rubrum (Chixiaodou), each half liang. The above six herbs are pounded and sifted into a powder. Mix with juice from Ulmus Macrophylla Cortex (Yubai Pi) and a small amount of water to form a paste. Apply on old cloth as a plaster. Apply twice daily for recovery.
Another prescription: Deer Horn (Lujiao). The single herb is ground with water on a stone slab into a mud-like consistency. Apply to the affected area. Apply three to five times daily for recovery.
Another prescription: Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia) 1 liang. The single herb is pounded and sifted into powder. Mix with water to form a paste. Apply to the affected area. Apply three to five times daily for recovery.
For treating Stone Abscess. Application Formula: Perillae Herba (Shuqi - dried) half liang, Morus Alba Root Bark (Sanggen Baipi) 2 liang. The above two herbs are pounded and sifted into powder. Melt Bovis Corium Colla (Niu Jiao), mix with wine, and apply to the swelling. Apply three to five times daily for recovery.
Another prescription: Hyoscyami Semen (Bangdangzi) 2 liang. The single herb is pounded and sifted into powder. Mix with vinegar to form a paste. Apply to the swelling. Reapply when dry until healed.
Another prescription: Dust from Roof Beams (Liangshang Chen), Ash from Abelmoschus Manihot Stems (Kuijing Hui), each 1 liang. The above two herbs are pounded and sifted into powder. Mix with vinegar to form a paste. Apply to the swelling. Apply three to five times daily for recovery.
Another prescription: Snake Slough (Shetuipi). The single herb is burned to ash and finely ground. Mix with vinegar to form a paste. Apply to the swelling. Change when dry.
