Discourse states: The Hand-Shaoyang meridian is the vessel of the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), primarily governing the circulation of the Three Qi (Qi of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Jiao). Its physiological movement favors descending. The meridian originates at the tip of the little finger and the ring finger, ascends along the Quepen (LI15) area, spreads in the Danzhong (CV17) region, and disperses to connect with the Pericardium meridian. If the meridian is deficient, Wind-Cold pathogens may invade it, pressing upon the Heart collaterals, causing Heart Qi to stagnate internally without smooth flow. This may either attack upward into the chest or draw downward to the hypochondrium, resulting in symptoms of hypochondriac pain and fullness with vexation.
Muxiang Decoction for treating hypochondriac pain and fullness with vexation, where symptoms attack upward causing discomfort in the heart and chest:
Muxiang (Costus Root, 1 liang), Binglang (Areca Seed, crushed, 2 liang), Shaoyao (Peony Root, 0.5 liang), Nongpou (Magnolia Bark, coarse skin removed, stir-fried with ginger juice), Gui (Cinnamon Twig, coarse skin removed), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome, rhizome head removed), Jingsanleng (Burreed Tuber, roasted and crushed), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, rhizome head removed), Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, crushed and stir-fried), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, processed), Renshen (Ginseng Root, sliced; each 1 liang).
The above fourteen ingredients are crushed to the size of hemp seeds. Each dose consists of three qianbi (approx. 3-4 grams), decocted in one zhan (approx. 200 ml) of water until reduced to seven-tenths. Strain and take warm. Administer on an empty stomach, at noon, at midnight, and before sleep.
