Commentary states: The pathogenic factor of heat-toxin erupts suddenly between the skin and hair follicles. If it cannot be vented outward, heat accumulates to form Dan Du (Erysipelas). Because its color is red like cinnabar paint, and Yang Qi is trapped within the skin, it is called "Dan" (Cinnabar/Redness). The heat qi is fierce and rapid; its eruption has no fixed location. It may be as large as a palm, or in severe cases, circulate throughout the four limbs. If not treated promptly, it may lead to ulceration with pus and blood discharge. If it occurs between bone joints, the limb may undergo necrosis as if severed; if the toxic gas enters the abdomen, it can be fatal. Treatment methods may even require incision with a sickle, indicating that the condition is urgent and allows no delay.
