Discussion states: The snake is a fire-insect; its heat energy is extremely intense, and its toxicity is severe. Snakes produced in different regions have different names, but those from the Guangnan region are the most numerous. There, the mountains are high and the ground is damp, with water and fire steaming and stagnating, causing the proliferation of snakes to be at its peak. In the areas of Qizhou and Huangzhou, there are slightly more snakes. In the south, there is a mountain located in water; during the transition between the fourth and fifth lunar months, groups of snakes exhale toxic vapors that rise several zhang high, steaming like clouds and mist. Every midsummer, miasma prevails, which is also due to this reason.
Generally, snakes cannot be fully described by type. Among them, only the flower snake (Hua She) and the black snake (Wu She) have extremely mild toxicity and cannot kill humans; therefore, they are included in medicinal materials. Whenever one sees a snake, one does not use its proper name but refers to it as an insect or "di suo" (ground rope/snake) to avoid it. When entering mountains or walking through deep grass, one should carry realgar (Xionghuang) and musk (Shexiang) to repel snakes. If a snake enters a house, burning antelope horn (Lingyang Jiao) until smoke fills the area will cause the snake to leave.
To treat bites from various venomous snakes where toxic vapors attack the heart causing coma and stifling sensation, Realgar Powder Formula (Xionghuang San):
Realgar (Xionghuang, Ground), Musk (Shexiang, Ground), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang, Pao'd into powder, each 0.5 liang), Croton Seed (Badou, 1 fen, peeled, membrane removed, oil completely extracted, then ground).
Mix the above four ingredients evenly. Take one dose of "yi zi" (approx. 0.5-1g), mixed with fresh cold water, taken immediately after being bitten. If slight diarrhea occurs, the toxic vapors will dissipate. If no diarrhea occurs, take one or two more doses.
To treat injuries from various venomous snakes and detoxify, Alum Powder Formula (Bai Fan San):
Alum (Baifan, boiled until dry and ground), Antelope Horn (Lingyang Jiao, burned to ash and ground, each 0.5 liang), She Wang (She Wang, 1 fen), Realgar (Xionghuang, Ground), Musk (Shexiang, Ground), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang).
Grind the above six ingredients into a fine powder and apply it to the wound. Snakes fear realgar; if you suspect a snake is hiding underneath, slightly burn realgar, and the snakes will scatter and flee.
To treat snake bites where toxic vapors attack the heart, Cinnamon and Musk Powder Formula (Guixiang San):
Cinnamon Bark (Gui, coarse bark removed), Trichosanthes Root (Gualou Gen, each 2 liang).
Grind the above two ingredients into a fine powder, store in a small bamboo tube tightly sealed, and carry it while traveling. If suddenly bitten by a venomous snake, apply it immediately.
To treat all types of venomous snake bites causing coma and stifling sensation, Pepper and Sulfur Poultice Formula (Jiaohuang Fu):
Closed-mouth Pepper (Bikou Jiao, 1 liang, powdered), Cocklebur Seedlings (Canger Miao, 5 liang, powdered), Ginger Juice (Shengjiang Zhi, 2 he), Sulfur (Huang, 0.5 liang, powdered).
Mix the above four ingredients and apply as a poultice.
To treat various snake bites where toxic vapors attack the heart causing coma and stifling sensation, Two-Insect Ointment Formula (Er Chong Gao):
Earthworm (Dilong, 5 pieces), Centipede (Wugong, 1 piece, collected on the Dragon Boat Festival day, specifically red-footed ones).
Mix the above two ingredients, pound thoroughly, and apply to the wound.
To treat pain and swelling from various snake bites, Pepper and Garlic Poultice Formula (Jiaosuan Fu):
Open-mouthed Pepper (Jiaohekou), Garlic (Suan, equal parts).
Pound the above two ingredients together until soft and apply to the wound for recovery.
Another Formula:
Sha Sand (Sha, 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredient into a fine powder. Take a raw scallion from the garden, pull it out from the soil, remove the tip of the scallion bulb, pour the sand powder into the hollow stem, and replace the tip. Leave for seven days, then dig up the scallion. Pour the sand juice onto a thin paper and dry in the shade. When injured, cut a piece of paper the size of a coin hole and apply it to the wound for immediate healing.
Another Formula:
Black Soybean Leaves (Heidou Ye, 5 liang).
Finely chop and pound the above ingredient, then apply to the wound. Use four to five times a day.
Another Formula:
Polygala Root (Yuanzhi, any amount).
Chew the above ingredient thoroughly until soft and apply to the wound. Also insert a piece into the bite puncture, changing it frequently.
For snake bites where the wound has closed but residual toxin remains inside causing itching and dull pain:
Purple Amaranth (Zixian, any amount).
Pound and squeeze the juice from the above ingredient, drink one cup, and apply the dregs to seal the wound.
To treat bleeding from snake bites and remove toxins, She Wang Powder Formula (She Wang San):
She Wang (She Wang, any amount).
Grind the above ingredient into powder, mix with saliva, and apply to the swollen area. Healing occurs when blood flows out.
To treat snake bites and apply to wounds, Realgar Powder Formula (Xionghuang San):
Realgar (Xionghuang, any amount).
Grind the above ingredient into powder and apply to the wound. Copper Green (Tongqing) can also be applied inside the wound.
To treat a snake suddenly coiling around a person and refusing to let go:
Pour hot water over the snake. It will immediately release.
To treat a situation where a snake accidentally enters the mouth while sleeping on the ground and cannot be pulled out:
Cut open the snake's tail, insert two or three grains of pepper inside, wrap it, and it will come out shortly. Alternatively, cut the tail of a sow, drip its blood into the snake's mouth, and it will come out. Or moxa-burn the snake's tail, and it will come out. Or cut around the snake's tail with a knife, sever the skin, and peel the skin backward to make it exit.
To treat venomous snake bites where toxic vapors attack the heart and abdomen causing confusion and stifling sensation:
Fermented Soybeans (Chi, 4 liang), Pepper (Jiao, eyes removed), Frankincense (Xunlu Xiang, each 3 liang), Alum (Baifan, burned to ash, 2 liang).
Mix the above four ingredients, pound thoroughly, mix with saliva, and apply to the injury site.
To treat injuries from venomous snakes, Shigong (water spiders), and Shali (sand fleas), presenting with blackened eyes, locked jaw, stiff limbs, and toxin attacking the abdomen leading to imminent death:
Raw Alum (Baifan, raw, 1 liang), Raw Licorice Root (Gancao, raw, 0.5 liang).
Grind the above two ingredients into a fine powder. Take three qian bi (approx. 9-10g) per dose, mixed with cold water and forced down. Immediately place a slice of garlic (cut to the size of a coin) on the wound and moxa-burn on top of the garlic slice. Do not limit the number of moxa cones. Replace the garlic slice when it burns. Stop when the pain subsides.
To treat bleeding from orifices caused by snake stings, Horsefly Powder Formula (Machong San):
Horseflies (Machong, 14 pieces that have recently fed on cow blood).
Burn the above ingredient to ash, mix with warm water, and administer orally.
To treat snake bites using garlic and moxibustion:
Single-clove Garlic (Dutou Suan, 1 clove).
Slice the above ingredient thinly, place it on the bite site, and apply moxibustion. Stop when the heat penetrates deeply.
Another Formula:
Musk (Shexiang, 1 fen, finely ground), Realgar (Xionghuang, 1 fen, finely ground), Pinellia Tuber Powder (Banxia Mo, 1 fen, raw).
Grind the above three ingredients evenly and apply to the wound for healing.
Another Formula:
Alum (Baifan, 2 liang, ground), Hemp Leaves (Dama Ye, 5 liang, chopped), Cocklebur Stems and Leaves (Canger Jingye, 5 liang, chopped).
Boil the above three ingredients in one dou of water until reduced to six sheng. Strain the dregs, add alum powder, and soak the affected area in the warm liquid.
Another Formula:
Cat Feces (Maor Fen, 3 liang, burned to ash), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang, 2 liang, chopped), Cow Horn (Niujiao, 2 liang, burned to ash), Huang (Huang, 1 liang).
Grind the above four ingredients into a powder, mix with saliva, and apply to the sting site.
Another Formula:
Black Soybeans (Heidou, 5 sheng, crushed).
Divide the above ingredient into two portions. Place in a basin, cover with water three cun deep, and soak the bitten area. After a long time, remove the old beans and replace with new beans to continue soaking. Recovery usually occurs within three changes. Additionally, grinding the beans into powder and taking them internally is also effective.
To treat venomous snake bites:
Apply moxa cones directly to the bite site to draw out the toxic vapors, which leads to recovery. This method is also effective for other harmful insect stings and horse sweat entering wounds.
