[Figure of the Xinwei Year's Qi and Yun]
Taiyin Wet Earth governs the Si Tian (Heavenly Sovereign) Qi, Taiyang Cold Water governs the Zai Quan (Earthly Subordinate) Qi, and the Central Yun (Annual Movement) is Shaoyu Water Yun. The year's Water Qi is insufficient, causing the Qi transformation to operate behind schedule, which belongs to the "Jiulou Ji" (Era of Dried Streams). Its climatic characteristics are identical to those of Zheng Gong (the balanced state of Earth Yun). In this year, the Heavenly Qi is peaceful, with Shaoyu Water Yun added upon Taiyang Cold Water. When Water Yun is insufficient but coincides with the same-year meeting, it is called "Tong Sui Hui" (Same-Year Meeting). Whenever there is a Sui Hui, it follows the seasonal commands. This transformation is also peaceful. All years conforming to the standard year have Qi operations synchronized with Heaven. Since the annual Yun is peaceful, it is named the "Jingshun Zhi Ji" (Era of Quiet Obedience). Its characteristics are: storing without harming, governing while favoring downward movement, all five transformations being orderly, its Qi bright, its nature downward, its function moist and expansive, its transformation condensed and firm, its administration flowing and spreading, its climate condensed and austere, its command cold, its category Water, its correspondence Winter, its grains Beans, its fruits Chestnuts, its substance moist, its animals Scaled creatures, its livestock Pigs, its color Black, its taste Salty, its musical note Yu, its number Six. In humans, its zang organ is the Kidney, its master is the Two Yin (anterior and posterior orifices), it nourishes the Marrow, and its diseases manifest as Jue Ni (Cold Reversal). This is what the annual Yun governs.
Regarding the Qi of Heaven and Earth: Above, Taiyin is seen; the left interstitial Qi is Shaoyang, and the right interstitial Qi is Shaoyin. Thus, Earth Qi ascends and its administration is austere. Below, Taiyang is seen; the left interstitial Qi is Jueyin, and the right interstitial Qi is Yangming. Thus, Heaven Qi descends and its command is silent. Yin Qi monopolizes the administration, while Yang Qi retreats. Great winds rise frequently, and the plains become dim. White dust rises in all directions, clouds rush toward the South Pole, and cold rains arrive often. Objects mature late in summer. Wetness and Cold combine their virtues, causing yellow and black dust to darken the air, circulating in the intersection of Qi. Above, they correspond to Zhenxing and Chenxing. Their grains are black. Therefore, Yin condenses above, and Cold accumulates below. When Cold Water overcomes Fire, hail forms. When sunlight cannot function, killing Qi prevails. People suffer from Cold-Dampness, presenting with abdominal fullness, body distension and discomfort, edema, stagnation and reverse flow, cold Jue, and tendon spasm. Thus, excess Qi favors high places, while deficient Qi favors low places; excess Qi favors lateness, while deficient Qi favors earliness. These are the advantages of Earth and the transformation of Qi. People's vital Qi also follows them. Intercalary grains refer to those of Taizheng (Fire Yun) and Taisang (Metal Yun).
Since the annual Qi is peaceful, one does not tap into the source of transformation but instead restricts the Qi of Water depression, preventing pathogenic factors from prevailing. Eating black grains preserves true Qi, and eating intercalary grains protects essence. For this year, bitter-hot herbs should be used to regulate the upper part, bitter-hot herbs to regulate the lower part, and bitter flavors to harmonize the middle part. Desiccating and warming methods should be applied. Before the midpoint of the year, Heaven Qi is governed by Taiyin Wet Earth. What Taiyin brings is clouds and rain; its transformation follows its root. During this time, rain and dampness transformations prevail, which is the administration of Taiyin. After the midpoint of the year, Earth Qi is governed by Taiyang Cold Water. What Taiyang brings is cold. Its transformation follows both its root and branch. During this time, when Cold Qi arrives and Hot Qi responds, it represents the peace of Earth Qi.
The First Qi period begins at Hai Chu on the Day of Great Cold in the Gengwu year and ends at You Chu on the Spring Equinox day of this year, lasting 60 days and 87.5 ke. The Main Position is Shaojiao Wood, the Guest Qi is Jueyin Wind Wood, and the Central Yun is Water. Wood occupies its proper position, governed by Water Yun, executing the Spring Command under the administration of Taiyin. As Earth Qi shifts, Cold departs, Spring Qi becomes correct, and Wind arrives. Vitality spreads, and all things flourish. People's Qi becomes smooth and comfortable. If Wind and Dampness contend, Rain will be delayed. People may suffer from blood overflow, tendon network stiffness, joint dysfunction, heavy body, and tendon flaccidity. It is appropriate to treat the Guest of Jueyin using Acrid flavor to tonify, Sour flavor to drain, and Sweet flavor to relax. Annual grains should be black, and intercalary grains should be rice, avoiding the harm of guest Wind.
The Second Qi period begins at You Zheng on the Spring Equinox day and ends at Wei Zheng on the Grain Buds day, lasting slightly more than 60 days. The Main Position is Taizheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Shaoyin Ministerial Fire, and the Central Yun is Water. Executing the舒荣 (soothing and flourishing) transformation under Taiyin's administration, the Great Fire Qi is correct, objects receive transformation, and people are harmonious. However, warm epidemic diseases spread widely, affecting distant and near areas equally. Wet steaming contends with heat, and rain falls timely. It is appropriate to treat the Guest of Shaoyin using Salty flavor to tonify, Sweet flavor to drain, and Sour flavor to astringe. Annual grains should be black, and intercalary grains should be beans, avoiding the harm of guest Heat.
The Third Qi period begins at Shen Chu on the Grain Buds day and ends at Wu Chu on the Great Heat day, lasting slightly more than 60 days. The Main Position is Taizheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Taiyin Wet Earth, and the Central Yun is Water. Heaven's administration spreads, Wetness descends, and Earth Qi ascends. Rain falls on time, and Cold follows. Contracting Cold-Dampness leads to symptoms of heavy body, edema, and chest/abdominal fullness. It is appropriate to treat the Guest of Taiyin using Sweet flavor to tonify, Bitter flavor to drain, and Sweet flavor to relax. Annual grains should be black, and intercalary grains should be sesame, avoiding the harm of Dampness pathogens.
The Fourth Qi period begins at Wu Zheng on the Great Heat day and ends at Chen Zheng on the Autumn Equinox day, lasting slightly more than 60 days. The Main Position is Shaogong Earth, the Guest Qi is Shaoyang Ministerial Fire, and the Central Yun is Water. Fire and Earth are compatible, executing the command of Taiyang. Fearing the approach of Fire, humid and steaming transformations occur. Earth Qi ascends, and Heaven Qi becomes blocked. Cold wind blows morning and evening, steaming heat contends, grass and trees are shrouded in smoke, and Wetness transformation does not flow. Consequently, white dew spreads yin, completing the Autumn command. People may suffer from hot interstices, sudden blood overflow, malaria, heart/abdominal fullness and heat, and abdominal distension. Severe cases present with edema. It is appropriate to treat the Guest of Shaoyang using Salty flavor to tonify, Sweet flavor to drain, and Salty flavor to soften hardness. Annual grains should be black, and intercalary grains should be beans, avoiding the harm of Heat pathogens.
The Fifth Qi period begins at Si Chu on the Autumn Equinox day and ends at Mao Chu on the Light Snow day, lasting slightly more than 60 days. The Main Position is Taisang Metal, the Guest Qi is Yangming Dryness Metal, and the Central Yun is Water. The harsh command has been implemented. Cold dew descends, and frost falls early. Grass and trees turn yellow and fall. Cold Qi reaches the body. Gentlemen dress warmly and carefully. People may suffer from skin and interstice diseases. It is appropriate to treat the Guest of Yangming using Sour flavor to tonify, Acrid flavor to drain, and Bitter flavor to purge. Annual grains should be black, and intercalary grains should be millet, avoiding the harm of guest Dryness.
The Final Qi period begins at Mao Zheng on the Light Snow day and ends at Chou Zheng on the Great Cold day, lasting slightly more than 60 days. The Main Position is Shaoyu Water, the Guest Qi is Taiyang Cold Water, and the Central Yun is Water. Cold Qi rises massively, and Wetness transforms greatly. Frost accumulates, Yin condenses, water freezes hard, and sunlight cannot function. Contracting Cold leads to patients suffering from stiff and fixed joints and waist pain. Cold-Dampness lingers in the Qi intersection, causing disease. It is appropriate to treat the Guest of Taiyang using Bitter flavor to tonify, Salty flavor to drain, Bitter flavor to firm, and Acrid flavor to moisten. Annual grains should be black, and intercalary grains should be broomcorn millet, avoiding the harm of guest Cold.
This year operates with the transformation of Balanced Qi. The Sui Hui executes the command. There is no excessive Qi or revenge. Only virtue, transformation, and administration are performed. However, Earth is Heaven Qi, and Water is Earth Qi. Although Earth and Water are harmonious, the Yun transformation is insufficient. Wet Earth is above, and Heaven Qi penalizes it. Perhaps Dampness pathogens harm people, but their Qi is weak. As stated in the Neijing regarding the execution of commands in the middle, the disease is slow and persistent.
