Commentary states: The *Neijing* (Inner Canon) mentions that there is a disease characterized by anger and mania, which arises from Yang pathogenic factors; the Yang Qi (vital energy associated with Yang), due to sudden frustration or obstruction, becomes difficult to resolve, thus leading to frequent anger. This disease is named Yang Jue (Yang Rebellious Qi). Yin and Yang cannot prevail excessively; if one prevails excessively, Qi mechanism becomes rebellious. "Yang Jue" refers to the condition where Yang Qi is excessive and causes Qi rebellion. Generally, when Yang Qi is suddenly frustrated, it stagnates and fails to disperse, resulting in irritability and mania. Anger causes Qi to move upward; therefore, if the pulses in the neck are beating large and rapidly, it is a sign of Yang Jue. The treatment involves withholding food intake until recovery. Since food enters the body to transform into Yin essence and nourishes Yang, if excessive Yang leads to Jue (reversal cold/shock), anger, and mania, withholding food serves to calm the Qi mechanism.
