Human life is formed by inheriting the Qi of Heaven and Earth. One should preserve the True Yuan (Primordial Energy) and secure the root, thereby preventing disease and maintaining lightness and health in the four limbs. However, difficulties arise because in their prime, when blood and Qi are abundant and body fluids are complete, people fail to maintain themselves, indulging only in wine and lust, disregarding hunger and fullness, obsessing over desires day and night without rest. This leads to the dissipation of essence and fluids, resulting in hematemesis (vomiting blood), expectoration of phlegm, bone-steaming feverish sensation, kidney deficiency with exhaustion of essence, emaciation, malar flush, pale complexion, dry mouth and throat, turbid urine, spermatorrhea, night sweats, difficulty in eating, and total loss of strength. This occurs because Fire invades the position of Metal (Lung). Severe cases may result in death within half a year, while mild cases may collapse within a year. Moreover, physicians who do not investigate the source nor understand the treatment, or who recklessly administer extreme cold or hot medicines, often fail to achieve efficacy. It is unknown that extreme cold further damages the middle Jiao, and extreme heat further depletes the interior. Thus, worldly physicians fail to examine the condition accurately. My master’s use of medicine to treat consumption (Lao disease) was like Hou Yi shooting arrows; nothing missed the mark. I list the sequence of medication below and detail the methods step by step. For patients with hematemesis and cough, first administer Shihui San (Ten Ash Powder) to rapidly stop bleeding. If it does not stop, Huarui Shi San (Flower Stamen Stone Powder) must be used. Generally, heat in the blood causes it to flow, cold causes it to coagulate, and black color stops bleeding; this is a fixed principle. After stopping the bleeding, the patient’s body must be relaxed, and Dushen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction) should be used to tonify, allowing for a deep sleep without disturbance. Upon waking, six or seven-tenths of the illness will have passed. Next, Baozhen Tang (Preserve Truth Decoction) should be taken to stop cough and calm the Lung, Taiping Wan (Taiping Pill) to moisten the Lung and support weakness, Xiaohua Wan (Digestion Pill) to descend phlegm and regulate Qi, and Baohe Tang (Harmony Preservation Decoction) to separately treat excessive Blood, Phlegm, Panting, Heat, Wind, and Cold, with modifications as needed. No other additions are required. Furthermore, regarding the method of taking medicine: take Baozhen Tang for the first three days, and Baohe Tang after three days, alternating these two medicines as the standard. Each day, still brew strong Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction) to gargle the throat. Swallow Taiping Wan slowly, then hold one pill in the mouth to dissolve gradually. When going to bed, use it thus; at night, the Lung orifices open, and the medicine flows into them. This secret is most crucial. If there is phlegm obstruction, first melt Yitang (Maltose) and swallow 100 pills of Xiaohua Wan with it, then chew Taiping Wan as before, lie on the back to sleep, and the cough will surely stop. If residual cough remains, boil Runfei Gao (Lung-Moistening Paste) to drink, restoring the root and perfecting the True Yuan. Only after complete recovery should Shizhen Wan (Ten Treasures Pill) be compounded and taken; this is called the "concluding and rising" medicine. The previous medicines are miraculous and spiritual; even if Bian Que were reborn, he would not exceed this. Alas! Worldly prescriptions rely merely on herbs, minerals, and stones, which are mundane. How can they attain such divine secrets and extraordinary efficacy? I received this book from my master. In Wu Zhong, how many tens of thousands have been treated for consumption? It had never been transmitted to anyone. Now, fearing its loss to the world, I have reorganized and renewed the order, naming it *Shiyao Shenshu* (Divine Book of Ten Medicines), leaving it to descendants to spread its transmission widely.
