Treatment for Taiyang disease (Taiyang syndrome) and wind-strike, where the pathogen remains unresolved after three to seven or eight days, presenting with chest and hypochondriac pain, cold extremities, dry heaving, inability to swallow fluids or food, retention of undigested food in the abdomen, and severe bloody diarrhea occurring dozens of times a day.
Fuling (Poria, size of a chicken egg), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each 3 liang), Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix) (4 liang), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) (each 1 sheng), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma).
Crush and sieve the above nine ingredients until well mixed. Take three "fangcun bi" (a square-inch measure of powder) of the powder, boil in one sheng of water for three boils, strain to remove dregs, and take the liquid. Administer three times daily. Cover with blankets to induce sweating; recovery occurs when sweat appears. For severe cases, administer six to seven fangcun bi.
Treatment for sudden swelling in Taiyang disease, which may occur on the four limbs or present as flaccid, bubble-like edema on the chest and back, or affect the head, face, lips, mouth, neck, and nape. In severe cases, it may localize on the outer calves, becoming thick like an axle but without pain or redness. When affecting the limbs, it causes motor impairment. This formula treats all such conditions.
Shexiang (Moscus), Xunluxiang (Olibanum / Frankincense), Jitixiang (Caryophylli Flos / Clove) (each 1 liang), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 2 liang), Baiwei (Cynanchi Atrati Radix), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (each 2 liang).
Chop the above thirteen ingredients. Boil in nine sheng of water to obtain three sheng of decoction. Divide into three doses. After taking the medicine, cover to induce sweating, then externally apply Fangji Gao (Stephania Plaster).
For Taiyang disease persisting beyond three days without improvement from previous medications, with a still rapid pulse, indicating that yang qi remains in the meridians and has not entered the zang-fu organs:
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 2 liang), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (each 3 liang), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (6 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (8 liang), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (14 fruits).
Chop the above nine ingredients. Boil in nine sheng of water to obtain two sheng and seven he of decoction. Divide into three doses, taken at intervals equivalent to traveling ten li. If sweating occurs after the first two doses, discontinue subsequent doses. If no sweating occurs, administer one additional dose; stop once sweating begins. If still no sweating, on the next day, remove Zhizi and add Mahuang (2 liang), add two sheng of water, and decoct again according to the original prescription.
Formula for treating Taiyang disease.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (10 jin), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (1 jin 13 liang), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (1 dou 4 sheng).
Chop the above three ingredients. Soak Mahuang in five hu and four dou of snow water in a cauldron placed on a stove facing east for three nights. Add Dahuang and stir to mix evenly. Cook using mulberry wood fire until two hu of liquid remains. Strain to remove dregs and return the liquid to the cauldron. Crush Xingren, add to the liquid, and cook again. The remaining liquid should be approximately six or seven dou. Strain to remove dregs, place in a copper vessel, and combine with three dou of snow water for further boiling. Stir to mix evenly to obtain two hu and four sheng of liquid. The medicine is ready to be formed into pills. Allow to cool and solidify, forming pills the size of bullet seeds. Patients suffering from illness should take five [pills] with boiled white water...
