(Two pulse diagnosis texts, two formulas, seven moxibustion methods)
Excess Heat of the Large Intestine
When the pulse at the Cun Kou position on the right hand, specifically anterior to the Qi Kou, presents as Yang Excess (Yang Shi), it indicates a pathology of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. The patient suffers from abdominal fullness, frequent asthma and coughing, red face, body heat, and a sensation of a lump in the throat and pharynx. This is termed "Excess Heat of the Large Intestine."
Formula for treating Excess Heat of the Large Intestine, characterized by abdominal distension and obstruction, and oral ulcers:
Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome, *Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens*), Jupi (Tangerine Peel, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium*), Qingzhuru (Green Bamboo Shavings, *Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam*), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, *Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma*), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, *Scutellariae Radix*), Zhiziren (Gardenia Seed, *Gardeniae Semen), each 3 liang; Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, *Cinnamomi Ramulus), 1 liang; Fuling (Poria, *Polyporus); Mangxiao (Mirabilite, *Natrii Sulfas), each 2 liang; Dihuang (Rehmannia Root, *Rehmanniae Radix), 10 liang; Dazao (Jujube Fruit, *Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus), 14 pieces.
The above eleven ingredients are chopped, decocted with 7 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng, strained, then Mangxiao is added. Divide into two doses.
Formula for treating intestinal distension that does not resolve:
Moxibustion on Dachangshu (BL25, Bladder 25) acupoint, 49 moxa cones.
When there is heat in the Large Intestine, accompanied by borborygmus, abdominal fullness, pain flanking the umbilicus, indigestion, asthma, and inability to stand for long periods, Jiuxu Shanglian (ST37, Stomach 37) is indicated.
Deficiency Cold of the Large Intestine
When the pulse at the Cun Kou position on the right hand, specifically anterior to the Qi Kou, presents as Yang Deficiency (Yang Xu), it indicates a pathology of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. The patient suffers from chest asthma, borborygmus with a sensation of emptiness and thirst, dry lips, eye tension/spasm, susceptibility to fright, and diarrhea with white discharge. This is termed "Deficiency Cold of the Large Intestine."
Formula for treating Deficiency Cold of the Large Intestine, characterized by dysentery with green or white discharge, and borborygmus with accompanying diarrhea:
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma), 4 liang; Fuling (Poria, *Polyporus), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome, *Chuanxiong Rhizoma), each 3 liang; Diyü (Sanguisorba Root, *Sanguisorbae Radix), 5 liang; Suan Shiliu Pi (Pericarpium Granati Acidum, *Punicae Granati Pericarpium), 5 slices; Fulonggan (Dragon's House Liver, *Argillae Rubra), one piece the size of a chicken egg.
Formula for treating borborygmus with accompanying diarrhea:
Moxibustion on Chengman (ST22, Stomach 22) acupoint, 50 moxa cones. The acupoint is located 5 cun lateral to Juque (CV14, Conception Vessel 14). Juque is located 1 cun below the heart center. When applying moxibustion, treat points 2.5 cun lateral to both sides of Juque.
Formula for treating frequent borborygmus and qi rushing upward to strike the heart:
Moxibustion on Qizhong (CV8, Umbilicus/Shenque).
When food and drink cannot be swallowed, borborygmus occurs in the abdomen, bowel control is lost, and urine is dark yellow, Yanggang (BL29, Bladder 29) is indicated.
When abdominal distension and borborygmus occur, qi rushes upward to the chest preventing prolonged standing, abdominal pain sounds like water sloshing, winter exposure to cold causes diarrhea, pain centers around the umbilicus, wandering qi in the intestines and stomach causes cutting pain, indigestion occurs, appetite is poor, edema is present, and tension flanks the umbilicus, Tianshu (ST25, Stomach 25) is indicated.
For borborygmus with pain, Wenliu (LI7, Large Intestine 7) is indicated.
