Treats *ke wu* (external pathogenic factors invading suddenly), *huo luan* (acute abdominal disorder with vomiting and diarrhea) causing abdominal pain and distension, *shi zhu* (miasma of corpse transmission), evil qi, mania and delusions (hearing voices of ghosts), *gu du* (poison from gu worms) and demonic influences, *wen nue* (warm malaria), and all other kinds of evil toxins; there is no evil toxin it cannot treat.
Formula:
Cinnabar (Zhusha), Azurite (Cengqing), Realgar (Xionghuang), Orpiment (Xionghuang - *Note: Text lists both Xionghuang for Realgar and Xionghuang for Orpiment, typically distinct as Xionghuang/Realgar and Xionghuang/Orpiment in context, here translated as Realgar and Orpiment based on standard pairing*), Magnetite (Ci Shi) (each 4 liang), Gold Leaf (Jinya) (2.5 liang).
The above six ingredients are each crushed and sifted through silk gauze. The three ingredients—Cinnabar, Orpiment, and Realgar—are soaked in vinegar. Azurite is soaked in good wine in a copper vessel. Seal tightly with paper, expose to the sun for one hundred days. In summer, intense exposure for five days suffices; if without sunlight, warm it with fire. Then grind each separately into fine powder, mix with vinegar to achieve appropriate moisture content, place in an earthen crucible, seal with *Liu Yi Ni* (Six-One Mud) to prevent gas leakage. After drying, install an iron ring stand at a height of one chi five cun, place the crucible on top. Gradually apply fire. Initially, take two sheng of calcined charcoal, each piece four cun long, placed on the crucible. When two-thirds of the charcoal has burned out, add more. Repeat this process three times using only calcined charcoal. Thereafter, add raw charcoal. Beyond these three additions of calcined charcoal, gradually increase the intensity of the fire. Until one *fu* (approx. 2 hours), when the fire approaches the crucible and the charcoal bed is full, add charcoal beneath the crucible. Perform this twice, then stop. Allow the fire to extinguish completely and the crucible to cool thoroughly before retrieving the medicine. The essence of the medicine flies up and condenses on the crucible; those with five colors are superior, three colors are secondary, and one color is inferior. Even without five colors, if the color is bright and pure like snow, it is best. If not much condenses, heat again as before, and collect with the wing of a male rooster. The quantity varies. Grind into a paste resembling jujube paste, and form pills the size of millet seeds. This treats *pian feng* (hemiplegia or localized wind stroke), *da feng* (leprosy or severe wind disease), malignant diseases, epilepsy, *li jie* (leprosy-like nodules), and "ghost strikes," being most effective.
Dosage: Take one pill on an empty stomach in the early morning as the standard. For chronic malaria unresponsive to hundreds of prescriptions, accompanied by abdominal distension, rebellious Qi, edema of the body, face, and feet, approaching death: take one pill. Recovery occurs after vomiting, though some recover without vomiting. If no vomiting and no recovery, take one and a half pills. If still unrecovered, increase by half a pill the next day, gradually adjusting until recovery. Qi will stabilize, and green, yellow, or white substances should be vomited. For those with masses under the hypochondrium due to malaria, these should also be cleared. If there is no abdominal distension, give one pill, increasing daily until efficacy is observed (*zhi*). Vomiting is not strictly necessary; one pill may suffice. Do not combine with other medications simultaneously. Alternatively, take once every three days, adjusting dosage according to judgment. If water accumulates in the abdomen and drains downward, do not be surprised. If the malaria is recent and the patient's spirit is robust, consider the patient's constitution, combining two pills into one large dose taken at once during afternoon meals. Keep the medicine neither cold nor hot; consume fermented soybean porridge (*chi jiang zhou*) freely. For malaria patients with night sweats and weakness, take one pill daily; stop when vomiting occurs on the third day. For malaria patients without sweating, stagnant Qi, and cold feet, take one pill. By the third day, if still no sweat, but Qi returns and feet become warm with moist sweat, stop when vomiting occurs before the third day. For malaria patients with sallow complexion, color returns within three days of taking the medicine. Some recover via vomiting, some with small doses. Strong individuals may need three or four pills to feel the medicinal action. Since constitutions vary, do not administer uniformly. Start with millet-sized pills, gradually increasing until efficacy is observed. The medicinal power is potent; do not overdose. Specifically avoid oil, flour, fish, meat, and garlic; maintain a pure diet. For chronic bedridden patients, emaciated with abdominal distension, edema, or dysentery, mortality is high; medication may save three or four out of ten. For *jia zheng ji ju* (masses and accumulations), take one *dao gui* (unit of measure), washed down with grain water (*jiang shui*).
For sudden death, *zhong e* (evil invasion), *ke wu*, *huo luan*, abdominal distension, *wu shi zhu* (five types of corpse transmission), evil wind, contagious major diseases leading to family extinction, mania, delusions, death with cessation of breath but residual warmth over the heart: lift the head, pry open the mouth. If teeth are clenched, remove two teeth, and deliver the medicine with liquid. Life returns immediately. For chronic patients, take one *dao gui* daily, cover to induce sweating; recovery follows sweating. If not recovered, repeat no more than twice. Some recover without sweating, some do not. Increase by half a *dao gui* as per previous method until recovered. Carry nine *dao gui* of powder in a crimson pouch; men wear it on the left, women on the right, children tie it to their head to ward off miasma, evil seasonal Qi, and *she gong* (arrow workers/schistosomes). For children's illness, mix with vinegar, apply to a square-inch paper, and place on the child's chest or abdomen. For those already dead, administer in winter for two days, in summer for one day; life returns if the medicine enters the stomach. Adding Gold Leaf and Magnetite causes vomiting and diarrhea after five doses. Adjust dosage thereafter, starting from bean-sized pills, gradually decreasing, never increasing. For severe leprosy/wind, up to twenty doses. For hemiplegia, joint pain, and various wind-epilepsy disorders, up to twenty doses. For other malignant diseases, limit to one or two doses; adjust according to severity and strength. To detoxify, boil fatty pork and eat it. After taking this medicine, mild headache and fever may last one to two days; taste may be lost temporarily, recovering naturally after five days when appetite returns. Moderation in diet is advised. If chest oppression and confusion occur after dosing, decoct *Mufangji Tang* (Stephania Tetrandra Decoction) to calm symptoms. One *dao gui* equals six millet grains; another view states three small beans equal one *dao gui*.
