Place salt in the umbilicus and moxibustion with three moxa cones. (Ge Shi's method for treating urinary retention).
For Qi Lin (Qi-type strangury), moxibustion at Guanyuan (CV 4) with fifty moxa cones. Additionally, moxibustion at a point one and a half cun lateral to Yuquan, thirty moxa cones.
Formula for Stone Lin (Stone-type strangury):
Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, Plantago Seed) two sheng, placed in a silk bag, boiled in nine sheng of water until three sheng remain. The patient must fast overnight and take the decoction in one dose on an empty stomach in the morning. The stones will be expelled.
(The *Beiji Fang* states: This treats Re Lin (Heat-type strangury)).
Another formula: Take enough Fusshi (Pumice) to fill a hand, grind into powder, boil with three sheng of water and one sheng of vinegar until two sheng remain. Clarify the liquid and take one sheng. Within three doses, the stones will be expelled. (Boiling Pumice in pure wine also treats cough).
Yet another formula: Take Taojiao (Pruni Mume Resin) the size of a jujube. In summer, mix with three he of cold water; in winter, mix with three he of warm water. Take this three times daily. Small stones like bean eggs should be passed. Stop when all stones are expelled. (Also treats Tong Lin (painful strangury) in children).
For Stone Lin, and thirty-six types of diseases below the umbilicus causing urinary retention, moxibustion at Guanyuan (CV 4) with thirty moxa cones.
Additionally, moxibustion at Qimen (CV 12? Note: Text says Qimen, likely referring to a specific local point or typo for another point, kept as Qimen) with thirty moxa cones.
Additionally, moxibustion at Shuiquan (KI 5) with thirty moxa cones. (The text notes Zu Dadun is here, though anatomically distinct, we follow the source text's identification).
Formula for Gao Lin (Gouty/Cloudy-type strangury):
Crush Pianxu (Persicae Herba? Note: Text says "Dao [blank] cao zhi", context implies Bian Xu or similar diuretic herb, often Pian Xu or Bian Huo Dian. Given "caozhi", likely Bian Xu juice. WHO term for Bian Xu is Herba Polygoni Avicularis), extract three sheng of juice, mix with two he of vinegar. Take on an empty stomach in one dose. Urine should resemble mung bean soup juice. Alternatively, drink concentrated decoction; it also treats dribbling strangury. (Su Cheng used this to treat hematuria).
Formula for treating Wu Lao Qi Shang (Five Exhaustions and Seven Injuries), Ba Feng (Eight Winds), Shi Er Bi (Twelve Obstructions), where labor accumulation causes Xue Lin (Blood-type strangury), heat accumulation causes Rou Lin (Flesh-type strangury), urinary retention, pain in the glans penis, and unbearable lower abdominal pain:
Huashi (Talcum), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Dongkuizi (Malvae Semen), Wangbuliuxing (Vaccariae Semen), Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) (each two fen), Gansui (Kansui Radix) (one fen), Shiwei (Pyri Folium) (four fen).
Process these eight ingredients and sift. Take one fangcun bi (square-inch measure) of powder mixed with half a sheng of Sesame Decoction, three times daily. Sand and stones will be excreted. (Another version adds Yubai Pi (Ulmus Root Bark) three fen).
For Lao Lin (Fatigue-type strangury), moxibustion at the Foot-Taiyin Spleen channel point with one hundred moxa cones. The point is three cun above the medial malleolus. Repeat the treatment three times.
Formula for Re Lin (Heat-type strangury):
Kuigen (Malvae Radix) (sliced one sheng; use seeds in winter, seedlings in summer), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, Jujube Fruit) (fourteen pieces).
Boil these two ingredients in three sheng of water until one sheng er he remains. Divide into two doses. If heat signs are prominent, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, Scutellaria Root) one liang. If urination is difficult, add Huashi (Talcum) two liang. If blood is present, add Qiangengen (Rubiae Radix et Rhizoma, Rubia Root) three liang. If pain is present, add Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, Peony Root) two liang.
Another formula: Slice Baimaogen (Imperatae Rhizoma, Imperata Rhizome) four jin, boil in fifteen dou of water until five sheng remain. Take one sheng per dose, three times during the day and twice at night.
Yet another formula: Frequently boil Dongkuigen (Malvae Radix, Malva Root) and drink as tea.
Formula for Xue Lin (Blood-type strangury) with gritty pain during urination:
Jisu (Elsholtziae Herba, Elsholtzia Herb), Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Huashi (Talcum) (each five liang), Zhuye (Bambusae Folium, Bamboo Leaf), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, Rehmannia Root), Xiaoji Gen (Cirsii Japonici Radix, Japanese Thistle Root) (one liang).
Chop these six ingredients, boil in nine sheng of water until three sheng remain. Strain and take the decoction warm, divided into three doses.
