Cishi (Magnetite), Shihu (Dendrobium Stem), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) (each 5 liang); Duzhong (Eucommia Bark), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig) (each 4 liang); Tianxiong (Aconitum Lateralis Radix Preparata), Sangjisheng (Taxillus Chinensis), Tiandong (Asparagus Cochinchinensis Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) (quantities missing in original text, typically implied equal).
The above twelve medicinal materials are crushed, soaked in four dou of wine, and taken three ge at a time, gradually increasing to five ge, administered twice daily. Alternatively, Magnetite can be soaked alone and taken.
A prescription for treating various diseases in both men and women caused by the Five Exhaustions and Seven Injuries, characterized by emaciation, wasting and thinness, stubborn cold due to wind and deficiency, shortness of breath and lack of strength, pallor, inability to move, bitter taste in the mouth and dry throat, restless sleep, nightmares, and fear.
Baishiying (White Quartz Crystal) (crushed like rice grains, decocted with nine sheng of strong wine in a copper vessel over low heat until three sheng remain, stirred constantly with a bamboo spatula, strained and clarified); Zi Shiyin (Purple Quartz Crystal) (prepared similarly, each 1 jin); Dihuang (Rehmannia Root); Baimi (White Honey); Su (Ghee); Taoren (Peach Seed); Shihu (Dendrobium Stem) (5 liang); Baiziren (Biota Seed), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root), Fuling (Poria), Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Rongshu (Cistanche Stem), Gancao (Licorice Root), Tianxiong (Aconitum Lateralis Radix Preparata), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Xixin (Asarum Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome) (each 2 liang).
The above twenty-four medicinal materials are processed and sifted, then added to the decoction. If the liquid is insufficient, add wine to make up the volume. Continue decocting until it reaches a consistency suitable for making pills. Form into pills the size of wu zi (Chinese honeylocust seeds). Take twenty pills with wine each time, three times a day, gradually increasing to forty pills as the maximum dose. If pill-making is not feasible, the decoction can be taken directly. This formula enriches the body and makes the flesh firm.
Select fresh deer antlers from the current year; those connected to the brain top are superior. Those with cut marks at the base are also usable, but those with uneven bases are unsuitable. There are over one hundred prescriptions involving deer antler pills; this one stands out. It is said that Rongchengzi consumed this and achieved transcendence. To prepare this medicine, use five sets of deer antlers, or four, three, two, or one set per batch. First, remove the tip of one cun. The remaining part should be about seven to eight cun long. Cut along the natural shape, split into slices according to grip size, and suspend in a bamboo container within flowing water for ten nights. If flowing water is unavailable, soak in a clean basin filled with water, changing the water nightly. Then remove, peel off the wrinkled skin, and slice to obtain the white inner core. Soak in clear millet wash water for two nights. Dry after the first night, discard old water, spread on new silk, and dry thoroughly. Select carefully, removing impurities, coarse bone skin, and uneven slices. Soak in unadulterated fine wine in a large white porcelain vessel for two nights. The amount of wine and vessel size depend on the quantity of medicine. Place the medicine and wine in a clean pot. Initially boil with high heat for the duration of one meal, then switch to low heat for gentle simmering. When bubbles resemble crab eyes, stir slowly with a willow spatula (four chi long, three fingers wide) without stopping. Change persons if tired. Add fine wine occasionally until the mixture becomes a thick syrup. Decoction must begin at dawn and not exceed two nights. Observe if the residue dissolves into a稀胶 (thin glue-like consistency). Then add five sheng of cow milk and one jin of ghee, adding subsequent medicines gradually.
Milujiao (Deer Antler) (one strip, roasted until yellow and powdered, prepared together with other medicines), Binglang (Areca Seed), Tongcao (Tetrapanax Pith), Qin Jiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Tusizi (Cuscuta Seed), Rongshu (Cistanche Stem) (each 2 liang).
Crush the above into powder. If tonification is not required, these do not need to be decocted together. Simmer for another meal's duration until the mixture resembles thick porridge. Remove from heat, allow steam to dissipate, then mix in the powdered medicines evenly. Stir until cohesive. Wait until it becomes sticky enough to form pills. Store in a new vessel. Roll into pills the size of wu zi simultaneously by multiple hands. If simultaneous rolling is impossible, warm and roll gradually. If sticky, apply a little ghee to hands. Take thirty pills initially on an empty stomach with "Three Fruit Juice" (San Guo Jiang). If unavailable, take with wine. Increase by one pill daily up to fifty pills, taken twice daily. During the first one hundred days of intake, abstain from sexual intercourse. After one month of intake, internal ailments will expel themselves; mild diarrhea is normal and should not cause alarm. Subsequently, flatulence may increase, appetite improves, hearing and vision sharpen, heart and spirit are nourished, organs are stabilized, marrow is filled, waist and legs are regulated, allowing prolonged standing, blackening of white hair, and rejuvenation of appearance. For qi stagnation, add Zhishi (Bitter Orange) and Qingmuxiang (Aquilaria Wood), each increased by one da liang. If previously ingested cinnabar or realgar (Dan Shi), suppress and vent the effects using Sanhuang Wan (Three Yellows Pill) after meals. If drinking alcohol or eating wheat products causes dry mouth, coarse nasal breathing, or gritty eyes, drink honey water to stop symptoms. If persistent, add Sanhuang Wan to induce mild purgation. After such a reaction occurs once, regular maintenance dosing can begin. By two hundred days, facial wrinkles smooth out and luster returns. By one year, lost teeth regenerate, memory strengthens, body feels light, capable of traveling hundreds of miles with wind and sun. By two years, the body becomes full yet appetite decreases; those over seventy appear younger. By three years, intestines transform into sinew and marrow, granting foresight. By four years, one feels satiated without eating, perceives immortals. Those under thirty who take it continuously maintain youthful appearance. Preparation must occur in a pure room, excluding women, mourners, chickens, and dogs. Women may also benefit from taking it.
