(One Treatise, Five Prescriptions)
The treatise states: For those suffering from Kidney Labor Disease (Shen Lao Bing), one should tonify Liver Qi to benefit the Kidneys; when Liver Qi is robust, it can resonate with and nourish the Kidneys. If a person goes against the Qi of winter storage, the Foot-Shaoyin [Kidney] channel will fail to store essence. Kidney Qi becomes stagnant and turbid; following this natural order leads to life, while opposing it leads to death; following it leads to cure, while opposing it leads to chaos. Reversing compliance into opposition results in Guan Ge (a critical condition characterized by the separation of Yin and Yang), and disease arises.
Prescription for treating Kidney Labor with Excess-Heat, manifesting as distension and fullness in the lower abdomen, yellow and red urine, incomplete emptying with frequent but scanty voiding, pain in the urethra, and sores on the scrotum:
Zhi Zi Ren (Gardenia Seed), Shao Yao (Peony Root), Tong Cao (Tetrapanax Pith), Shi Wei (Pyrrosiae Folium) (each 3 liang), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (5 liang), Hua Shi (Talcum) (8 liang), Zi Qin (Scutellariae Radix, i.e., Huang Qin) (4 liang), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Yu Bai Pi (Ulmus Rubra Bark), Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba) (chopped, each 1 sheng).
These ten ingredients are crushed, boiled in 1 dou of water until reduced to 3 sheng, filtered to remove dregs, and divided into three doses.
Prescription for treating Kidney Labor Heat with sores on the scrotum:
Ma Huang Gen (Ephedrae Radicis Caulis), Shi Liu Huang (Realgar), Mi Fen (Rice Flour) (each 3 liang); Rice Flour (5 he).
These three ingredients are ground and sifted finely. Apply the powder to the sores using the usual method for dusting powder. If the powder becomes wet, reapply fresh powder.
Decoction powder prescription for treating Kidney Labor Heat causing irrational anger, stiffness of the waist and spine preventing flexion and extension:
Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), Zi Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 2.5 liang); Fu Ling (Poria), Wu Jia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 3 liang); Ling Yang Jiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 liang); Dan Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam) (size of a chicken egg).
These sixteen ingredients are ground and sifted to make a coarse powder. Boil 3 sheng of water, add one fang cun bi (a square inch measure) of the powder, wrap in silk cloth, and simmer with occasional agitation. Extract 0.8 sheng as one dose, taken twice daily.
Prescription for treating Deficiency-Labor where Yin and Yang are imbalanced, damaging sinews and vessels, causing shortness of breath, leakage (seminal emission or diarrhea), red and yellow urine, dampness and itching in the genital area, waist and spine pain feeling like breaking, and sallow complexion ("Sui Luo" variant "Duo" refers to sallow/withered appearance):
Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Zao Rou (Jujubae Mesocarp) (each 1 sheng).
These six ingredients are crushed, soaked in 1.5 dou of wine for three nights, removed, dried in the sun, and soaked again until the wine is absorbed. The herbs are then ground and sifted. Take one fang cun bi after meals with wine, twice daily.
Prescription for treating Kidney Labor with Deficiency-Cold, internal injury due to dryness and sorrow, and kidney damage from sitting long on damp ground:
Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Fu Ling (Poria) (each 4 liang); Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (or Gan Di Huang per variant), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex) (each 3 liang); Ce Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex) (each 5 liang); Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis) (6 liang), Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (8 liang), Wu Jia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex) (10 liang), Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen), Da Ma Zi (Cannabis Fructus) (2 sheng).
