(One Treatise, Eight Formulas, Eleven Moxibustion Methods)
The treatise states: When a patient suffers from abdominal fullness, if pressing the abdomen does not cause pain, it is a deficiency pattern; if pressing causes pain, it is an excess pattern. If abdominal fullness persists without reduction, or any slight reduction is negligible, purgation should be employed. If the tongue coating is yellow and purgation has not yet been used, administer purgatives, and the yellow coating will naturally disappear. If abdominal fullness decreases intermittently but returns to its previous state, this indicates a cold pattern, and warm herbs should be administered. If abdominal fullness is accompanied by bitter taste and dryness in the mouth, and the Duyang pulse (pulse at the dorsalis pedis artery) is faint and wiry, according to standard principles, there should be abdominal fullness; if there is no fullness, there must be obstruction in the lower part, difficult defecation, and pain in both hypochondriac regions. This is caused by deficiency-cold qi ascending from below. Warm herbs should be taken to achieve recovery. If abdominal fullness is accompanied by pain radiating towards the lower abdomen, it indicates impending spontaneous diarrhea (another version states: abdominal pain with qi moving downward toward the lower abdomen indicates impending spontaneous diarrhea).
Formula for treating disharmony of Stomach Qi, characterized by frequent distension, coughing, and inability to eat.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Ju pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper).
The above nine ingredients are coarsely crushed, boiled in 9 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng, and divided into three doses.
Formula for treating deficiency-cold in the Stomach, abdominal fullness and blockage requiring downward-moving Qi.
Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Fuling (Poria), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (each 2 liang), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus).
The above twelve ingredients are coarsely crushed, boiled in 1 dou of water until reduced to 3 sheng, and divided into two doses.
Formula for treating abdominal fullness due to cold pathogen in the abdomen, loud borborygmus with severe pain, rebellious Qi causing chest and hypochondriac fullness, and vomiting.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (one piece), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber), Jingmi (Oryza Sativa), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) (ten pieces).
The above five ingredients are coarsely crushed, boiled in 8 sheng of water with the rice. Once the rice is cooked, strain the dregs. Take 1 sheng per dose, three times daily. (The *Jiyan Fang* adds Ganjiang [Zingiberis Rhizoma] 2 liang).
Formula for treating abdominal fullness and fever lasting dozens of days, with a floating and rapid pulse, while appetite remains normal.
Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (half jin), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (4 liang), Chen Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus aged) (five large pieces).
The above three ingredients are coarsely crushed, boiled in 1.2 dou of water until reduced to 5 sheng. Add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and boil until reduced to 3 sheng. Strain and take 1 sheng. Do not take if bowel movement or borborygmus occurs after ingestion; if no reaction occurs, take another dose. Another version adds Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) 2 liang.
