To treat Wind-Warmth disease (Fengwen Bing), where the pulse is floating at the cun, guan, and chi positions on both hands, with sweating and heavy body sensation, inevitable panting in respiration, a dull and unresponsive demeanor, and a strong desire to sleep. If purgation is mistakenly applied, difficulty in urination will ensue; if diaphoresis is mistakenly induced, delirious speech will certainly occur; if burning needle therapy is mistakenly used, deafness and difficulty in speaking will result; if only emesis or purgation is used, fecal and urinary incontinence will follow. Weiyu (Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati), Baiwei (Radix Anemarrhenae), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), Qingmuxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) (each 2 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (3 liang).
The above nine ingredients are cut into small pieces, decocted in 8 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng, strained, and divided into three doses. The goal is to induce sweating. If alternating chills and fever occur, add Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas) 1 fen and Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) 3 liang for purgation. (According to *Duanju Fang*: Weiyu Tang treats Winter-Warmth and Wind-Stroke in Spring. In cases of Cold Damage, symptoms include fever, headache, dry throat, stiff tongue, internal chest pain, chest fullness, and stiffness of the waist and back.)
(Three Prescriptions Follow)
Prescription for treating Cold Damage (Shanghan) presenting with headache, neck stiffness, and painful discomfort in the four limbs.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Shujiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), Wutou (Radix Aconiti), Mangcao (Herba Siegesbeckiae) (each 3 liang).
The above eight ingredients are cut into small pieces, soaked in thick fermented vinegar for two nights, then decocted with 4 jin of lard until the medicinal color turns yellow. Strain and remove the dregs. Take three pills the size of a jujube pit with warm wine, three times daily, aiming to induce sweating. If ineffective, slightly increase the dose. This can be taken internally or applied externally for massage. If Cold Damage is newly acquired, with severe headache and back stiffness on the first day, external massage is recommended for better results.
Prescription for treating Cold Damage presenting with reddish complexion, headache, neck stiffness, and wandering pain caused by "Thief-Wind" (Zefeng).
Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), Xixin (Herba Asari), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum), Shujiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) (each half liang), Badou (Semen Crotonis Tiglii) (50 seeds).
The above seven ingredients are cut into small pieces, soaked in thick fermented vinegar overnight, then decocted with 1 jin of lard from the twelfth lunar month. Adjust the fire carefully, using the method of "three boilings and three cooling periods" (heating to boiling, removing from heat, letting cool, and repeating) to complete the preparation. For Cold Damage with red face and fever, take one pill the size of a Chinese quinoa seed with wine. Simultaneously, massage the body hundreds of times with heat. This also excellently treats Thief-Wind. For wind wandering through the skin and muscles, massage at the site of the wandering wind yields miraculous effects. This is a formula by Zhao Quan.
Prescription for treating Cold Damage headache: face the fire, massage the body, take one pill the size of an apricot kernel with wine, cover warmly to induce sweating, and massage the body over a thousand times for the medicinal power to act. It also treats malignant sores, pediatric head sores, and saddle sores on cattle. First wash with salt water, wipe dry with cloth, then apply the ointment. For carbuncles and swelling, apply moxibustion and massage a thousand times; twice daily application leads to spontaneous resolution.
Tianxiong (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii Preparata), Wutou (Radix Aconiti), Mangcao (Herba Siegesbeckiae), Yangzhizhu (Fructus Daphnes Genkwa) (each 3 liang).
The above four ingredients are cut into small pieces, soaked in 3 sheng of fermented vinegar overnight. Prepare an east-facing dew-exposure stove and twelve mounds of wet earth, each about one sheng in volume. Take 3 jin of refined lard, place it in a copper vessel, melt it over the stove using reed firewood. Add the soaked herbs and bring to a boil. Place the vessel on the earth mounds. When boiling stops, return to the fire. Repeat this process twelve times until all earth mounds are used up. Strain and remove dregs. For Cold Damage with sore throat, hold one pill the size of a jujube pit in the mouth, three times daily. During massage, avoid contact with the eyes.
