The treatise states: For those suffering from Heart Exhaustion Disease, tonify Spleen Qi to benefit it; when Spleen Qi is robust, it can influence and nourish the Heart. If one goes against the Qi of Summer, the Hand-Taiyang (Small Intestine) channel will not grow properly, leading to an internal hollowness of Heart Qi. Following this leads to life, going against it leads to death. Following it leads to proper regulation, going against it leads to chaos. Reversing the natural order constitutes Guan Ge (Obstruction and Reflux, where Yin and Yang are severed), and disease arises.
Treatment for Heart Exhaustion Heat, Oral Ulcers, Difficulty with Bowel Movements, Obstruction and Inability to Pass Stool, Chest Fullness and Pain, and Small Intestine Heat.
Rheii Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao), Gardeniae Semen (Zhizi Ren) [each 3 liang], Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin), Tetsii Herba (Tongcao), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) [each 2 liang], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) [1 liang].
Coarsely crush the above ten medicinal materials. Use nine sheng of water. First, take one sheng of water to soak Dahuang separately overnight. Boil the remaining eight sheng with the other herbs to obtain two sheng and five he of decoction. Strain out the dregs. Add the soaked Dahuang and boil for two boils, then strain out the dregs. Add Mangxiao and stir until dissolved. Divide into three doses.
(One Treatise, One Formula, Two Moxibustion Methods)
The treatise states: The condition of Mai Ji (Extreme Pulse) primarily concerns the Heart. The Heart corresponds to the vessels, and the vessels harmonize with the Heart. Heart diseases often originate from the vessels. It is also said: Illness contracted in summer is called Mai Bi (Pulse Bi Syndrome). If Mai Bi persists and one is again affected by pathogenic factors, they enter internally and lodge in the Heart. This results in food and drink failing to nourish the flesh and skin, coughing with pale and lusterless blood, empty pulse, and red lips. When Mai Qi declines, blood becomes scorched and hair falls out. Contracted on Bing-Ding days in summer due to Wind Strike, damaging the Mai, it becomes Xin Feng (Heart Wind). The presentation of Heart Wind includes excessive sweating and aversion to wind. If Mai Qi is excess, there is heat; heat damages the Heart, causing irritability, red mouth/lips, and in severe cases, slurred speech, blood depletion with dry and lusterless complexion, and failure of nutrition to nourish the body. If Mai Qi is deficient, there is cold; cold causes coughing, which leads to Heart pain, a sensation of obstruction in the throat as if something is stuck, and in severe cases, swollen throat and Bi syndrome. Thus, these are the signs of deficiency and excess in Heart Wind.
