(Three Discourses, Eighteen Symptom Patterns, Thirty-Seven Formulas)
Discourse: If people do not take mineral drugs (Shiyao), they often experience poor fortune in various affairs, suffering from malignant sores (Echuang), scabies and tinea (Jiexuan), warm epidemics (Wenyi), and malaria (Nueji). These conditions recur annually, causing restlessness in sleep and appetite. This not only leads to personal ill health but also makes it difficult to raise offspring. Therefore, having mineral substances in the body ensures peace and prosperity in all matters; however, one must strictly avoid taking the "Five Minerals Powder" (Wushi San). Individuals aged thirty and above may take mineral drugs. If one is naturally plump and robust, one should not take them recklessly. Those aged forty and above must take them. For those aged fifty and above, one dose may be taken every three years; for those aged sixty and above, one dose every two years; and for those aged seventy and above, one dose annually.
It is also said: By the age of fifty, the essence and vitality decline. Taking mineral drugs at this stage can still yield their efficacy. After sixty, the effect diminishes, and it becomes difficult to derive benefit from mineral drugs. Therefore, regular intake is necessary to keep the hands and feet warm, fill the bone marrow, aid in digesting raw and cold foods, ensure lightness of movement, resist cold and heat, and prevent various diseases. Thus, it is highly recommended. All minerals must be calcined and processed before use. When mineral drugs manifest their effects, symptoms such as aversion to cold (Ehan), headache (Toutong), and chest oppression (Xinmen) inevitably occur, with periodic onset resembling warm malaria (Wen Nue). Upon observing these signs, one should not exceed limits; washing with cold water will suffice, and the symptoms will cease upon feeling cold. Regarding all cold foods, only wine needs to be warmed; other detoxification methods are detailed below. If a carbuncle on the back (Fabeiju Zhong) occurs, refer to Volume 22 for the formula.
Furthermore, those taking mineral drugs must be cautious about mixing strong-flavored foods. Even if a hundred varieties of delicacies are presented, one should ultimately avoid consuming heavy amounts of meat. Since mixed flavors are too rich, they inevitably interact negatively, causing accumulations that fail to dissipate, thereby triggering the mineral drugs. If one maintains mental discipline according to the rules and manages diet properly, the benefits of mineral drugs cannot be surpassed. At the age of thirty-eight or thirty-nine, I once took five or six liang of Milk Stone (Rushi). Since then, I have deeply understood its nature. Regarding regulation and care, I am quite familiar with its properties. Scholars of longevity should pay close attention to this. However, the Milk Stone must come from pure land, be white and lustrous, possess patterns like silk gauze, and resemble intact bird feathers. Only then can it be ingested. Stones not from such lands must never be taken, as they often cause death. Their toxicity exceeds that of Zhen poison (Zhen Du). Purple Stone (Zishi) and White Stone (Baishi) must be transparent inside and out, bright and clean; otherwise, they are unfit for use. Regarding the formula for Cold Mineral Five Minerals Gengsheng San (Han Shi Wushi Gengsheng San), old texts state that ancient sages did not have this prescription. It was practiced by He Hou in the late Han Dynasty. From Huangfu Mi (Huangfu Shian) onwards, those who ingested it invariably suffered from back carbuncles or bodily disintegration, leading to ruin. Since my youth, I have personally witnessed numerous officials and commoners suffering from this. Therefore, I would rather consume Wild Ge (Yege, a toxic vine) than take Five Minerals Powder, clearly recognizing its immense and fierce toxicity. One must be extremely cautious. Wise individuals encountering this formula should burn it immediately and not keep it. I now record only the indications and contraindications to prevent harm to those who have previously taken it. The formula itself has been destroyed by fire and need no longer be preserved, to avoid harming living beings.
