Formula for treating hard masses:
Daphne genkwa (Wu Lang Du, 野狼毒) (five liang), Pinellia ternata (Ban Xia, 半夏), Prunus armeniaca seed (Xing Ren, 杏仁) (each three liang), Cinnamon twig heart (Gui Xin, 桂心) (four liang), Aconitum carmichaelii root lateralis preparata (Fu Zi, 附子), Sichuan pepper (Shu Jiao, 蜀椒), Asarum heterotropoides (Xi Xin, 细辛) (each two liang).
The above seven herbs are ground into fine powder. The apricot seeds are separately pounded and mixed with honey to form pills the size of soybeans. Take two pills at a time with warm water.
For treating sudden onset of long-standing fixed masses with hardness in the abdomen.
Kansui root (Gan Sui, 甘遂), Scutellaria baicalensis root (Huang Qin, 黄芩), Mirabilite (Mang Xiao, 芒硝), Cinnamon twig heart (Gui Xin, 桂心), Asarum heterotropoides (Xi Xin, 细辛) (each one liang), Rhubarb (Da Huang, 大黄) (three liang).
The above six herbs are chopped, decocted in eight sheng of water until reduced to two and a half sheng, divided into three doses.
For treating acute abdominal masses where there is a hard object in the abdomen like stone, pain like cutting or stabbing, crying and calling day and night. If untreated, death will occur within one hundred days.
Achyranthes bidentata root (Niu Xi, 牛膝) (two jin), chopped and sun-dried, soaked in one dou of wine. Seal the vessel tightly and simmer until half remains. Take half sheng per dose. One dose induces vomiting of retained food, with miraculous effect.
Another formula for acute abdominal masses.
Take Phytolacca acinosa root (Shang Lu, 商陆), pound it, steam it, place it on fresh cloth laid over the abdomen, cover with clothing. Replace when cool. Use continuously for several days, morning and evening without rest.
Another prescription: Garlic (Suan, 蒜) (ten slices, taken from those hung on doors on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, peeled), Cinnamon twig (Gui, 桂) (one chi two cun), Yellow earth from stove center (Zao Zhong Huang Tu, 灶中黄土) (size of a chicken egg).
Pound the above three ingredients together, mix with strong vinegar, apply on cloth to cover the affected area. It will resolve within three days. Using garlic alone is also good (not used in *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*).
Formula for acute abdominal masses.
Kadsura longipedunculata root (Ye Ge, 野葛), Angelica sinensis root (Dang Gui, 当归), Aconitum carmichaelii root lateralis preparata (Fu Zi, 附子), Realgar (Xiong Huang, 雄黄) (boiled in lard for one day), Asarum heterotropoides (Xi Xin, 细辛) (each one liang), Aconitum carmichaelii root preparata (Wu Tou, 乌头) (two liang), Croton tiglium seed (Ba Dou, 巴豆) (one hundred seeds), Sichuan pepper (Shu Jiao, 蜀椒) (half liang).
Chop the above eight herbs, soak overnight in strong vinegar. Fry Aconitum in two jin of pork fat until yellow, remove dregs, add Realgar powder, stir until solidified. Apply on cloth to cover the mass, then cover with oil-soaked heavy cloth, and finally ten layers of paper.
For treating twelve types of zheng and jia masses, leukorrhea in women, infertility, and for those wishing to take Cold Food Powder but have solid masses in the abdomen, first take this large pill to purge them.
Niter (Xiao Shi, 硝石) (six liang, Glauber's salt is acceptable), Rhubarb (Da Huang, 大黄) (eight liang), Ginseng (Ren Shen, 人参), Licorice root (Gan Cao, 甘草) (each two liang).
Grind the above four herbs into powder. Place three sheng of three-year-old aged vinegar in a copper vessel. Insert a bamboo chopstick as a marker. One sheng equals one "ke" (unit of time/measure), so three sheng equals three "ke". Heat over fire. First add Rhubarb, stir constantly until slightly boiling for one "ke", then add remaining herbs, boil for another "ke", leaving one "ke" remaining. Use very low heat to form pills the size of egg yolk. Before preparing the medicine, observe fasting for one night. Do not let children, women, or servants see the process. To purge disease, use two pills. If unable to take large pills, divide into smaller ones, not exceeding four pills. Larger pills are preferred over smaller; undivided is best. For weak persons, eat a little before taking; for strong persons, no need to fast. Take five times in twenty days. Bowel movement occurs after half a day of digestion. In women, discharged material may resemble chicken liver, rice water, dark red-black, volume one to three sheng. After purging, avoid wind and cold. Eat a bowl of porridge, then soup. Recover as postpartum women do. Conception may occur within six months. Avoid raw fish, pork, and pungent vegetables. Those taking Cold Food Powder should follow their specific regimen and not take this simultaneously.
