To treat Yang Poison (Yang Du, a severe toxic condition characterized by heat and toxicity) that develops into Yang Poison within one or two days of contracting Cold Damage (Shanghan), or transforms into Yang Poison after taking emetic or purgative medicines. Symptoms include heavy body, pain in the waist and back, mental restlessness and discomfort, delirious speech, wandering about, or hallucinations of seeing ghosts; hematemesis (vomiting blood) or dysentery may occur. The pulse is floating, large, and rapid. The face is red with mottled spots resembling brocade patterns. There is sore throat and expectoration of pus and blood. It is treatable within five days, but becomes untreatable after seven days. The following prescription should be taken.
Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 0.5 liang); Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shujiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli), Xionghuang (Realgar), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) (each 6 zhu).
The above six herbs are coarsely crushed. Boil in 5 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Divide into three doses. Administer one dose every interval equivalent to walking five li. Cover the patient warmly to warm the hands and feet. When the toxin is expelled through sweating, the disease resolves. If not resolved after sweating, prepare another dose. Vomiting after administration is also considered beneficial. (Zhang Zhongjing's formula does not contain Guixin but includes one piece of Biejia [Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis] the size of a hand; *Zhouhou* and *Qianjin* are identical to this; *Gujin Luyan* contains Zhizi [Fructus Gardeniae] 6 zhu and one piece of Biejia the size of a hand.)
To treat Yin Poison (Yin Du, a severe toxic condition characterized by cold and toxicity) that forms within one or two days of the onset of Cold Damage, or transforms into Yin Poison after taking medicines for six to seven days up to ten days. Symptoms include heavy body, stiffness of the back, colicky abdominal pain, difficulty in the throat, toxin qi attacking the heart, hardness below the heart, shortness of breath with inability to take deep breaths, vomiting and regurgitation, cyanosis of the lips, blackening of the face, and cold limbs. The pulse is deep, fine, tight, and rapid. Zhang Zhongjing states this is the presentation of Yin Poison, where the body feels as if beaten. It is treatable within five to six days, but becomes untreatable after seven days. The following prescription is indicated.
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) (each 0.5 liang); Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shujiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli) (each 6 zhu); Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis) (1 liang).
The above five herbs are coarsely crushed. Boil in 5 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Divide into three doses. Administer another dose after an interval equivalent to walking five li. Cover the patient to induce sweating. The toxin should be expelled through sweat; recovery occurs when sweat appears. If no sweat occurs, the pathogen is not eliminated, so prepare another dose. (Zhang Zhongjing's formula does not contain Shujiao.)
To treat limb and joint pain caused by Cold Damage, external cold invasion with internal heat, and empty vexation (Xu Fan).
Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 2 liang); Jiangjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (each 3 liang); Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) (4 liang); Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) (15 pieces).
The above six herbs are coarsely crushed. Boil in 1 dou of water until reduced to 5 sheng. Strain the dregs. Take 1 sheng warm. Administer three times during the day and twice at night. Cover the patient to induce slight sweating.
