A prescription for treating various types of dysentery, as well as body heat, headache, red eyes, and persistent painful restlessness in the four limbs caused by Shanghan (Cold Damage), accompanied by heat-type diarrhea: or after being treated by physicians with emetics or purgatives, resulting in empty irritability within the abdomen, a desire for cold beverages that cannot be digested, urgent abdominal pain, vomiting upon consuming warm food, alternating hot and cold sensations resembling Wen Nue (Warm Malaria); or for cases with difficult urination, abdominal fullness, nausea, and vomiting, and continuous diarrhea.
Zhi Li (5 liang) [Note: Likely refers to a specific type of moss or lichen used medicinally]
Zishi Ying (Purple Quartz) (3 liang)
Hanzhong Mugangji (Stephania tetrandra from Hanzhong) (6 liang)
Longxi Danggui (Angelica sinensis from Longxi) (4 liang)
Houpo (Magnolia Bark) (1 liang)
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome)
Take the above eight ingredients. Soak Mugangji in 2 sheng of Ku Jiu (Vinegar) until thoroughly moistened. Remove and cut into pieces. Cover with a tile over charcoal fire, place thick paper on the tile to ensure dryness, soak again in vinegar, remove and simmer until all vinegar is evaporated. Do not use strong fire; slowly simmer until extremely dry. Grind each ingredient into powder. Take the remaining 3 sheng of vinegar to soak Chi (Fermented Soybean) overnight. The next morning, place in a clay pot, cover with another pot, and steam for five sheng's worth of vapor, ensuring air circulation from below. Remove, grind, and squeeze out the concentrated juice. Mix with the herbal powders and pound into pills the size of chicken seeds. Hang to dry in the shade, avoiding dust and wind. This medicine takes three pills as one dose. Take one dose at dawn, one during the day, and one at dusk, all taken with water. If the disease is severe and the medicinal power has not yet acted, increase the dosage, up to four or five doses per day. The sign of efficacy is when the medicinal power is present in the abdomen and food can be digested. If feeling unsettled after taking the medicine, consume thin porridge to assist the medicinal power. Once clear-headed, consume soup, eaten slightly cool. If one no longer desires cold food, it indicates the medicinal power has exhausted itself. To stop taking the medicine, simply consume slightly warm food, and the medicinal power will naturally dissipate. There is no need to force drinking large amounts of water while taking the medicine. Avoid hot food, raw fish, pork, garlic, raw vegetables, alcohol, spicy substances, and fatty/greasy foods. If Wind disease is present, add Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) 1 liang. If the person is weak and emaciated, add Shihu (Dendrobium Stem) 1 liang. If there is a history of chronic dysentery with damaged and weak intestines and stomach, add Taiyi Yuliang (Kaolin/Red Earth) 2.5 liang, selecting the yellow, soft, and fragrant stone variety. For postpartum diseases in women, add Shi Liuhuang (Native Sulfur) 1 liang. For yellow-red urine with difficulty in urination, add
