(One treatise, six formulas, one acupuncture and moxibustion method)
The treatise states: In Bone Deficiency Syndrome (Gu Xu), there is soreness, pain, restlessness, and fatigue. In Bone Excess Syndrome (Gu Shi), there is suffering from vexation and heat. The manifestations of Bone Excess or Deficiency are primarily governed by the Kidney (Shen) and Bladder (Pang Guang). If internal organs are diseased, symptoms manifest from the bones. Heat corresponds to the Zang organs (specifically the Kidney), while Cold corresponds to the Fu organs (specifically the Bladder).
Formula for treating Bone Excess with soreness, pain, and vexation/heat:
Radix Puerariae Juice (Gegen Zhi), Radix Rehmanniae Preparata Juice (Shengdi Zhi), Red Honey (Chi Mi) (each 1 sheng), Herba Ophiopogonis Juice (Maidong Zhi) (5 he).
Mix the above four ingredients and stir. Simmer over low heat for three to four boils. Divide into three doses.
Formula for treating Bone Deficiency with soreness, pain, restlessness, and fatigue, targeting Bladder Cold:
Tiger Bone (Hugu) - one whole piece, roasted until yellow and charred, crushed to the size of a sparrow's head. Use 3 shi of rice, 4 dou of yeast/qu, and 3 shi of water. Brew according to standard wine-making methods. Water and yeast are added because the bone absorbs the yeast and moisture. Once the wine is mature, seal the container and open it after fifty days for consumption.
Formula for treating pain in the bone marrow:
Tiger Bone (Hugu) (4 liang), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishao) (1 jin), Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shengdi) (5 jin).
Chop the above three ingredients. Soak in 1 dou of clear wine for three nights. Remove, dry in the sun, and return to the wine. Repeat this process until the wine is fully absorbed. Then pound and sieve. Take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) of the powder with wine, three times daily.
Method for treating cold pain in the bone marrow:
Extract juice from 1 shi of Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shengdi). Mix with 2 dou of wine. Re-boil the mixture. Take warm, three times daily. This tonifies the marrow.
Formula for treating deficiency-wasting syndrome (Xu Lao) with cold bone-joint pain and weakness:
Fermented Soybean (Chidou Chi) (2 sheng), Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shengdi) (8 sheng).
Steam and sun-dry the above two ingredients twice, then grind into a powder. After meals, take two fangcun bi with 1 sheng of wine, twice daily. This also treats deficiency-heat.
Another formula: Grind Radix Asparagi (Tian Dong) into a powder. Take one fangcun bi with wine, three times daily. Recovery can be expected within one hundred days.
Yet another method: Moxibustion on Shanglian point (70 moxa cones). This acupoint is located 3 cun below Zusanli (ST36).
(One treatise, sixteen formulas, one Qigong guidance method, seven acupuncture and moxibustion methods)
The treatise states: Generally, there are five types of lower back pain (Yao Tong):
First is Shaoyin lower back pain; Shaoyin belongs to the Kidney. In the tenth month, the yang qi of all things declines, leading to lower back pain.
Second is Wind-Bi lower back pain; wind-cold pathogens adhere to the waist, causing lower back pain.
Third is Kidney Deficiency lower back pain; excessive labor injures the Kidney, causing lower back pain.
Fourth is Traumatic lower back pain; falling from a height injures the waist, causing lower back pain.
Fifth is Cold-Damp lower back pain; sleeping on the ground due to cold leads to injury by earthy dampness, causing lower back pain that persists and radiates to the entire lumbar spine. (Character "Hui", pronounced like "Hui". Chao Yuanfang's *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: Sudden injury causing waist pain is called "Hui".)
