This discussion does not imply that there is no heat, no fire pathogen (Fire Pathogen), or no heat disease. There is. However, one cannot misidentify cold syndromes (Cold Syndromes) as heat, nor can one confuse things by calling a deer a horse, mixing up unrelated matters, or labeling all diseases as heat. Of course, one also cannot label all diseases as cold; each condition should be identified according to its true nature. However, statistical data from real-world cases shows that eight or nine out of ten patients suffer from Yang deficiency (Deficiency of Yang Qi), which is indeed the case. Only two or three out of a hundred have Yang excess (Excess of Yang Qi); how many truly have an abundance? If it is said that Yin (Yin Fluids) is now damaged, and if Yin is truly damaged, then nourishing Yin (Nourishing Yin Fluids) is required, and Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) can be used. Today, I even administered Liuwei Dihuang Wan to my mother. Two days ago, she took Fuzi Lizhong Wan (Aconite and Immature Ginger Decoction for Warming the Middle and Regulating the Spleen), after which her whole body felt weak, and she had to lie down. Upon examining her pulse, it was large (Huge). This clearly indicates a slight insufficiency of Yin, accompanied by abdominal pain. This abdominal pain is not caused by Fuzi Lizhong Wan, but rather resembles the pain treated by Guizhi Jia Shaoyao Dahuang Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction with Added Peony Root and Rhubarb), and in some cases, Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) might need to be removed. The entire pulse is scattering outward; if you further disperse it outward, wouldn't this lead to mental confusion (Shen Hun)? However, when the pulse was previously tight (Tight Pulse) and Cold pathogen (Cold Pathogen) was abundant, didn't we need to break through this Yin stagnation? In that case, we still needed to support Yang (Supporting Yang Qi). We are not saying that nourishing Yin is wrong. Why do we say that the approaches of the Warm Disease School (Warm Disease School) are incorrect? It is because their founding figures treated illnesses incorrectly. For example, Ye Tianshi (Ye Tianshi), whose medical cases everyone has read. When others analyze his cases, what is the situation? Refer to Chai Zhongyuan's "Re Bing Heng Zheng" (Standardizing Heat Diseases), which collects comprehensive materials on this aspect. Do not be superstitious, and do not believe in folk legends; the medical cases are written clearly. What were the final results? How many ended without resolution? How many were cured immediately upon treatment? How many actually recovered? Anyone with clear insight can see this.
The phenomena of cold and heat indeed vary according to the annual climate luck and the broader sixty-year climate cycles. When the Qi of Yangming Dryness Metal (Yangming Dryness Metal Qi) dominates the season, numerous Yangming syndromes (Yangming Syndromes) may appear. Therefore, during the 1958 warm plague (Warm Plague), Mr. Pu Fuzhou (Pu Fuzhou) did not use Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction)? There are such warm diseases; the nature of warm diseases tends toward Yangming, where Yangming Dryness-Fire Qi (Yangming Dryness-Fire Qi) is excessively strong.
Netizen: What is Qi? For example, pathogenic Qi (Pathogenic Qi) or Yuan Qi (Original Qi). How should one understand Qi?
Mr. Sanqi: Qi is something we actually encounter every day, vividly present. Sometimes when you look out a window, especially when opening windows in spring or summer, looking outward, you can see a fluctuation, cloud-like. Sometimes, if there are buildings or specific objects in front, looking through them creates a sense of fluctuation, like a mirage. Actually, this is the influence of Qi.
Yang transforms into Qi, and Yin forms shape. Anything can be transformed into Qi under the driving force of Fire. Metal can become liquid; wood can be burned until charred, or wood can be directly burned into fire. Qi is essentially the process of matter transforming into energy release, where tangible things finally become intangible things, becoming a process of energy transformation. Thus, Yang transforms into Qi, and Yin forms shape. Yin governs coagulation; once coagulated, it becomes a tangible solid. Yang, however, disperses tangible things, transforming them into energy. This energy, this driving energy, is Qi. The most direct manifestation is water. When water lacks Yang Qi (Yang Qi), it freezes into ice. At zero degrees, it becomes ice; between zero and 100 degrees, it is water, becoming liquid and flowing. If water lacks Yang Qi, it becomes a solid state, ice. When it receives heat, the temperature rises, and it becomes liquid, which can flow. When raised above 100 degrees, it transforms into a gaseous state, which is truly Qi. However, even between zero and 100 degrees, there is Qi within it; without Yang Qi, it would coagulate. Yang transforms into Qi; when transformed to the extreme, it becomes true Qi. The Qi in the human body is the same; this Qi and Blood (Blood) are of the same substance. If this Blood lacks Qi, it will coagulate, becoming Stasis Blood (Stasis Blood). This Qi has different names in different parts of the body. In the chest, it is the Great Qi of the Chest (Great Qi of the Chest); in the Spleen and Stomach, it is Middle Qi (Middle Qi); in the Kidney, it is Kidney Qi (Kidney Qi); in the Blood, it is Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi); at the exterior, it is Wei Qi (Defensive Qi). Why does Western medicine not understand this thing? Because it completely looks for things in form; it uses anatomy to observe. Anatomy involves a dead person, where Qi has already departed, so Qi cannot be seen. It is like looking for Qi in water; actually, Qi is in the water, but if you try to extract it, you cannot catch it. Without Qi, it becomes ice, it coagulates. The reason humans can move is due to this breath/Qi. Once this Qi scatters, Blood immediately coagulates, and the body stiffens. Thus, this is the concrete difference between life and non-life; the difference lies in this Qi. If you do not understand this Qi, and do not know the stage of Great Qi, you cannot treat diseases. You can only look for disease in form, conducting tests and radiography. If there is no disease in form, everything is declared normal. But where do those symptoms come from? Actually, they exist at the level of Qi transformation (Qi Transformation). Problems at the level of Qi transformation manifest as functional obstacles, causing various discomforts in people. However, they may not necessarily take form; by the time they take form, it is already too late. It has already transitioned from Yang to Yin, from exterior to interior, from shallow to deep, from transforming Qi to taking form. At this point, it becomes a tumor, which is the meaning here. Regarding Qi, do not feel confused or think it is illusory. Actually, this Qi is the most concrete thing; leaving this Qi, all phenomena would change.
Netizen: Thank you, Mr. Sanqi, for your explanation. I feel I understand a little, but not very clearly. This may be related to my education, the so-called "obstruction of knowledge." Because from childhood, we have been educated in modern science, and when thinking about many issues, we always follow Western educational ways of thinking. I know this is a very bad phenomenon, but it is hard to break through this way of thinking all at once. After encountering Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I feel that Eastern and Western cultures are two different thinking systems. But I still haven't found my way. How can I truly use Chinese thinking, TCM thinking, to contemplate all things in the universe? This is also what I hope to get guidance from you gentlemen in the future.
Netizen: After excessive fatigue during winter vacation, combined with drinking alcohol and catching cold, I have been coughing continuously. I am trying to treat myself but am unsure. I hope you gentlemen can give some advice. Is it Heart-Lung Yang decline (Decline of Heart-Lung Yang) or Spleen-Stomach Yang decline (Decline of Spleen-Stomach Yang)? From reading medical books, it seems they are different. If it is Heart-Lung Yang decline, perhaps Jiang Gui Fu Gan Tang (Ginger, Cinnamon, Aconite, and Licorice Decoction) would suffice. For Spleen-Stomach Yang decline, Banxia Shengjiang Tang (Pinellia and Fresh Ginger Decoction) type formulas should work. I don't know how to distinguish?
Mr. Sanqi: The relationship between Heart-Lung and Spleen-Stomach is actually very close. One is Middle Qi (Middle Qi), and the other is Zong Qi (Pectoral Qi/Gathering Qi). The Qi in the middle is Earth, and the Qi above is Metal; their relationship is Earth generating Metal. If Middle Qi is insufficient, the Qi of the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner) will definitely be insufficient. If the Upper Jiao is damaged, it can also damage Middle Qi. When Qi is insufficient, pathogenic factors (Pathogenic Factors) can enter through the void. Regarding cough, it generally starts from misdiagnosis/mistreatment of a common cold, or Cold pathogen entering from above into the Lung.
All five Zang organs and six Fu organs can cause cough. The stagnation of Cold pathogen can lead to cough; another type is Wood Qi rushing upward, which can also cause cough. The nature of cough in spring sometimes differs from that in autumn. It is not necessarily always Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) syndrome; sometimes astringency (Astringent Method) is needed. If the rushing is too excessive, you can distinguish it by observing the Right Cun (Right Cun Pulse) pulse. One type of pulse is Tight (Tight Pulse), indicating a constricting image. Another type is Large (Large Pulse), indicating a rushing image. If constriction is too excessive, you must disperse it. If rushing is too excessive, you must restrain it. These two natures are different; although it is the same cough, the pulse and tongue images are different.
The gentleman just mentioned the issue of thinking style—the so-called "science." Actually, when using science, when researching it, you must first realize the limitations of science. Because science is a tool for exploring the world, it inevitably suffers from the limitations of this tool. Didn't Galileo say that science is measurement? Measurement requires a tool. If this tool measures length, it must be straight, which is the Ju (Square/Ruler). If it is the Gui (Compass), measuring circles, without square and compass, nothing can be made square or circular; you cannot substitute one for the other. A ruler also has limits; it cannot measure everything. Thus, the tool itself inevitably has its own boundaries. Scientific research is based on matter. Currently, the scope of research mostly remains within the level of form, i.e., matter. Beyond matter, beyond specifically formed matter, regarding things in form, current scientific cognitive ability is still very limited; even meridians (Meridians) cannot be measured. Not being measurable does not mean non-existent. Many phenomena visible to the naked eye are difficult to measure and record with a tool, let alone invisible existences. Therefore, do not place tools in a position of suprematism. This tool suprematism is the so-called scientism, which is an erroneous tendency in cognition. So, first, one must know its limitations. Do not try to measure everything with it, attempting to make this limited thing the standard for judging all right and wrong, because some things are outside its measurement scope. Can it be measured in the future? Perhaps in the process of continuous development, it might be measurable in the future, but currently, it inevitably has limitations. And no matter how far it develops in the future, measurement itself will always have its own limitations, determined by the inherent limitations of the tool itself.

Brain, Marrow, Bone, Vessels, Gallbladder, and Uterus (Zi Nu Bao) are these six locations. Some are Zang organs, some are tissues. The Brain is originally Marrow; the Brain is the Sea of Marrow. Marrow is governed by the Kidney and stored in the Bone. Bone and Marrow are actually one entity. Vessels refer to Blood Vessels. The Gallbladder: All eleven Zang and Fu organs depend on the Gallbladder; it secretes bile and internally houses Xiang Huo (Ministerial Fire). The Uterus (Zi Nu Bao): Bao refers to the uterus, a place capable of reproduction, generated by Earth Qi. Earth can nurture all things. Why can it nurture all things? Because there is Qi in the Earth. The Qi stored in the Earth is all stored in Yin and corresponds to Earth. In the Bagua, Earth is Kun. Kun contains Yang, which transforms into Kan. Actually, these locations are all related to Kan, which is the single Yang line in Kan. Heaven generates Water (One), Earth completes it (Six). Human life begins with the formation of Essence (Jing). These things are also related to Water; after Essence forms, Brain and Marrow generate. Bone, Brain, and Marrow are all Water locations; Vessels and Gallbladder are Wood locations. This is the relationship between Water and Wood, which is the location governing growth and generation, the root and initial location of generation. After Winter Solstice, the initial movement of Yang occurs, representing such a status. It is a location of Extreme Yin, stored in Yin and corresponding to Earth. In the place of Extreme Yin, it is not in the bright light, so it stores without draining. It should store without draining, but you may not be able to maintain it, so sometimes it leaks out. Actually, this is Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo); if Ministerial Fire leaks externally, problems arise. If these places lack Ministerial Fire, lack Kan Yang, or lack the Yang line of Zhen (Thunder), they become Extreme Yin, pure Yin things. Pure Yin without Yang becomes dead land, saline-alkali land; it lacks vitality and is cold inside.
Extraordinary Fu Organs. What is "Qi" (Odd/Single)? It is relative to "Ou" (Even/Pair). Ou means two; Qi means only one. Having only one shows its importance; it cannot be paired, it has no counterpart, it is unique, so it should be stored. It should be stored in its original position and not moved casually. Kan contains one Yang, while Li (Fire) has two Yang lines externally. The two Yang lines still have a pair; this Yang can be used slightly. But the Yang in Kan must be tightly stored, kept well. Only by storing it well can Ministerial Fire remain in its proper position. Only when Ministerial Fire is in position can it play the role of the source of动力 (dynamic power). What is "Heng" (Constant)? Constant and unchanging, do not let it change randomly. There must be preservation, Shen (Spirit) preservation, being able to guard internally. Therefore, for these locations, the Extraordinary Fu Organs—Brain, Marrow, Bone, Vessels, Gallbladder, Uterus—if problems arise in these places, they cannot remain constant, so they change. Various abnormalities appear, which are pathological changes. If these places can be preserved, lifespan will surely be long. Daoist cultivation actually cultivates what? It cultivates this thing. It does not leak externally, storing without leaking. Following the natural order makes one human; reversing it makes one an Immortal. What is an Immortal? An Immortal is actually someone who stores these things without leaking, returning Essence to nourish the Brain, refining Essence into Qi, and transforming Qi into Shen (Spirit). At this time, Shen function arises; Shen function without fixed methods is called Sagehood.
