The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats chronic asthma (Shangqi, upward rushing of qi) that has persisted for years without improvement, in critical condition approaching death.
Solanum frutescens L. seed (Lángdàngzǐ, Solani Fructus), stir-fried until color changes; Cooked sheep lung (Yángfèi, Ovis aries L. Lung), thinly sliced, dried in the sun, and ground into powder.
These two ingredients are crushed separately in equal proportions, mixed with vinegar collected on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, and stirred to ensure even coating. Fasting at night, take two "fang cun bi" (a traditional measure approx. 2-3 grams) on an empty stomach. After a short while, approximately between two meals, stop the effect by drinking two mouthfuls of cold rice gruel. Take every other day until permanently cured. Within thirty days, one may consume rice water and make turnip soup; all other dietary restrictions apply strictly. (Wen Zhong and *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* agree.)
Another prescription for chronic asthma persisting for thirty years without improvement:
Jujube fruit (Dàzǎo, Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus), 100 pieces, pitted and peeled; Fermented soybean (Chǐ, Soiae Semen Preparatum), 120 grains; Apricot seed (Xìngrén, Armeniacae Semen Amarum), 100 grains; Sichuan pepper (Jiāo, Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), 200 grains, processed to release moisture ("han").
These four ingredients: First crush the apricot seeds thoroughly until very fine, then add jujubes, Sichuan pepper, and fermented soybeans, and crush again to form pills the size of a jujube pit. Hold in the mouth and swallow slowly. Three times daily, once at night. (Both from Volume 17.)
The *Jin Xiao Fang* (Near-Efficacy Formulas) treats chronic asthma with急促 breathing (qìjí) and inability to lie flat:
Perilla leaf (Zǐsūyè, Perillae Folium), 2 liang; Fresh ginger (Shēngjiāng, Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens); Ephedra stem (Máhuáng, Ephedrae Herba), nodes removed; Apricot seed (Xìngrén, Armeniacae Semen Amarum), each 3 liang; Red Poria (Chì Fúlíng, Polypori Umbellati Sclerotium); Mulberry root bark (Sāngbáipí, Mori Radicis Cortex); Lepidium seed (Tínglìzǐ, Lepidii Semen), each 2 liang, stir-fried; Tangerine peel (Júpí, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), 1.5 liang.
These eight ingredients are chopped. Add 8 sheng of water. First boil Ephedra to remove foam, then add the remaining herbs and decoct together. Obtain 2.7 sheng of liquid, filter out dregs, and divide into three doses. Each dose is taken at intervals equivalent to walking 7-8 li. Take warm. After finishing the decoction, take the following pills.
Additional Pill Formula:
Lepidium seed (Tínglìzǐ, Lepidii Semen), 6 liang, stir-fried until purple.
This single ingredient is crushed into a paste and formed into pills the size of a wetland pea (wú zǐ). Take ten pills after each meal with jujube infusion, twice daily. Use ten dried jujubes, broken into pieces, boiled in 1 sheng of water to obtain 0.5 sheng, filtered, to administer the pills. This is very effective.
The *Gu Jin Lu Yan* (Ancient and Modern Verified Records) Hu Jiao Wan (Pepper Pills) treats cough with asthma, chest fullness, and occasional vomiting of saliva/phlegm:
Black pepper (Hújiāo, Piperis Nigris Fructus); Long pepper (Bìbá, Piperis Longi Fructus); Dried ginger (Gānjiāng, Zingiberis Rhizoma); Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhù, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), each 3 liang; Cinnamon twig heart (Guìxīn, Cinnamomi Ramulus); Galangal root (Gāoliángjiāng, Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma); Ginseng root (Rénshēn, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); Winter flower bud (Kuandōnghuā, Farfarae Flos); Aster root (Zǐwǎn, Asteris Radix et Rhizoma); Licorice root (Gāncǎo, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), each 2 liang, roasted.
These ten ingredients are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of wetland peas. Take five pills per dose, twice daily. If ineffective, increase the dosage until therapeutic effect is achieved. Avoid raw/cold foods, slippery foods, pork, fish, beef, garlic, peaches, plums, sparrow meat, raw green onions, kelp, and cabbage. (From Volume 19.)
The *Jiu Ji* (Emergency Rescue) Fúlíng Rénshēn Sǎn (Poria and Ginseng Powder) treats asthma, chest and hypochondriac fullness/stuffiness, strengthens heart power, eliminates forgetfulness, prevents cholera-like disorders, and promotes appetite. The efficacy of this formula surpasses other medicines. There was a person who, at age forty, suffered from chronic dysentery, became emaciated and too weak to stand or walk, resembling a seventy-year-old. After taking two doses of this medicine, he recovered completely. Long-term use extends life and promotes longevity.
Poria (Fúlíng, Polypori Sclerotium), 2 jin, remove black skin, break into pieces the size of jujubes, soak in clear water for one day and one night, change water twice, dry in the sun, and grind into powder; Ginseng root (Rénshēn, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), 7 liang, crushed; Licorice root (Gāncǎo, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), 1 liang, roasted and sliced; Cow's milk (Niúrǔ, Bos taurus Domesticus Lac), 7 sheng; White rock sugar/honey (Báishāmì, Mel), 1.5 sheng.
These five ingredients: Add licorice to 5 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 2 sheng. Remove licorice and clarify/filter. Add Poria, simmer gently until the liquid is nearly exhausted. Then add white honey and cow's milk, followed by ginseng. Simmer gently until the liquid is fully reduced. Stir constantly to ensure uniformity, avoiding burning or clumping. Dry in the sun, crush, and sift into a powder. Store in paper. Mix with warm milk or honey water for consumption. Dosage is not limited; in summer, cool water may be used. Avoid kelp, cabbage, and large amounts of vinegar. Note: Large measures (dou, sheng, cheng, liang) are used here. This formula is extremely effective, with immediate results after a few doses. (From Volume 6.)
