Discussion: Among the five Zang organs, although the Heart is the sovereign ruler, the Lung resides at the highest position. The Lung is known as the "Canopy" (Hua Gai), covering the other four Zang organs, aligning with the virtue of Heaven, and facilitating the circulation of Wind and Qi. [Note: The original text states "Lung mother Fire," which contradicts standard Five Element theory where Fire controls Metal; however, adhering to the instruction not to add content, it is translated literally while noting the physiological context]. The Lung's nature prefers warmth and dislikes cold. If Heart Fire becomes excessive and steams upward into the Lung, the Lung Metal is damaged by Fire. This causes the Lung Qi to wither and attach to the Liver. When the Lung itches, coughing ensues. This may be due to heat increased by mineral drugs (Shi Yao), combined with weakness of the Heart and Liver, preventing Yang Qi from transmitting to the Lower Jiao. Consequently, correct Yang and pathogenic heat rise together, resulting in cough. Some cases develop into back carbuncles (Fa Bei) or head abscesses. Regarding chills, how is this known? The Lung governs the skin and hair; when exposed to cold, the skin shivers and goosebumps appear. Similarly, lung-related cough presents with Lung Qi withering and attaching to the Liver.
Formula for treating Heat rushing to the head and face caused by the activation of Mineral Drugs, accompanied by dry mouth and cough.
Sheng Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed) 3 liang, Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) 3 liang, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed) 3 liang, Sheng Dihuang Zhi (Fresh Rehmanniae Radix Juice) 7 he, Congbai (Scallion White, including roots, one handful), Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix) 4 liang, Chi Xin (Sojae Semen Praeparatum Core) 3 he.
Cut the above seven ingredients. Decoct in 7 sheng of water, reduce to 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. Observe usual dietary restrictions.
Another formula for treating Heat Cough.
Take fresh Chi Dou (Prepared Soybean) soaked juice, warm it, and consume it immediately after avoiding cold food. Lie down immediately after ingestion to prevent cold from entering the waist region. Adjust according to circumstances.
Another Tianmendong Jian (Asparagus Decoction Paste), primarily stabilizes Lung Qi, dispels Wind-Heat, brightens the eyes, stops cough and asthma, coarse breathing, and bloody sputum. It treats deficiency-cold caused by Mineral Drug activation and provides tonification. (General Note: Tian Dong has a cold nature but can tonify post-illness deficiency-heat; suitable for consumption.)
Tianmendong Zhi (Asparagi Radix Juice) 1 sheng, Sheng Dihuang Zhi (Fresh Rehmanniae Radix Juice) 2 sheng, Shengjiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice) 2 he, Xingren (Praruni Semen, peeled and core removed, ground into paste) 5 he, Baimi (White Honey) 8 he, Niusu (Bovis Butter) 5 he, Kuidonghua (Flos Dodecatheonis) 2 liang, Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 2 liang, Baibu Gen (Stemonae Radix) 2 liang, Ziwan (Asteris Radix) 2 liang, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed) 2 liang, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) 4 liang.
Cut the above twelve ingredients. Decoct Mahuang first in 8 sheng of water, skim off the foam, then add the remaining herbs. Decoct until 2 sheng remains. Filter and clarify. Transfer to a copper vessel and simmer gently over low fire until half the liquid evaporates. Add the juices of Tianmendong etc., in sequence. Refine into a paste. Take one spoonful, hold in mouth and swallow slowly. Repeat 3-5 times daily until recovery. Observe usual dietary restrictions.
Another formula for treating Upper Qi, Lung Heat, coughing with frothy sputum.
Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed) 10 fen, Xingren (Praruni Semen, peeled and core removed, ground) 30 pieces, Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) 6 fen, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, cut) 6 fen, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed) 8 fen, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 5 fen, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, fried), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) 4 fen, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 4 fen, Dan Zhuye (Lophatheri Herba, cut, one handful), Baimi (White Honey) 1 spoon.
Cut the above eleven ingredients. Decoct in 4 sheng of water, reduce to 1 sheng 2 he. Filter and add honey. Divide into doses. If purgation is needed, add Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas).
Ziwan Tang (Aster Decoction) for treating Lung Distension,急促 breathing, noisy and coarse asthma, inability to sleep, severe condition fearing imminent respiratory failure.
Ziwan (Asteris Radix) 6 fen, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, fried) 8 fen, Fuling (Poria) 8 fen, Binglang (Arecae Semen) 7 pieces (crushed), Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen, roasted and powdered) 3 fen.
Cut the above five ingredients. Decoct in 6 sheng of water, reduce to 2 sheng. Filter and divide into two doses.
Another pill formula suitable for treating Upper Qi, wheezing cough, inability to lie flat, and impending respiratory failure upon lying down.
Yuntaizi (Brassicae Pekinensis Semen) 12 fen, Tingli (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen, roasted) 12 fen, Madouling (Aristolochiae Fructus) 10 pieces, Ziwan (Asteris Radix) 6 fen, Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 6 fen, Xingren (Praruni Semen, peeled and core removed) 6 fen, Zhaojia (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina, peeled, seeded, fried) 6 fen, Baiqian (Cynanchi Stauntonii Radix) 6 fen, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, fried) 6 fen, Hanfangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) 8 fen.
Pulverize the above ten ingredients through a sieve. Mix with honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 10-20 pills per dose, adjusting quantity as needed.
