The etiology is that the cold damage disease has passed through its transmission cycle but remains unhealed, the pulse is instead deep and slow, and the hands and feet are cold and inverted. This indicates that the pulse at the lower part is imperceptible, with yin and yang qi cut off from each other; pathogenic factors have invaded the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, and toxic heat fumes upward, causing throat obstruction or pain accompanied by ulceration. (From Volume VII)
In Zhang Zhongjing's *Treatise on Cold Damage*, for Shaoyin disease presenting with sore throat, Banxia San Ji Tang (Pinellia Powder and Decoction) is the primary formula.
Banxia (Washed) Gancao (Honey-fried) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Bark)
These three ingredients are of equal proportion. Each is crushed and sifted, then mixed together and pounded again. Take one Fangcunbi (a traditional Chinese measure approx. 2.7g) with rice water, three times a day. If the powder form cannot be taken, boil one Sheng (approx. 200ml) of water until it boils seven times, add two Fangcunbi of the powder, boil for three more cycles, remove from heat, and let cool slightly. Hold in the mouth and swallow slowly. Banxia is toxic and should not be taken directly as a dry powder. Avoid mutton.
Wen Zhong’s method for treating throat and pharynx swelling and pain caused by toxic qi attacking due to cold damage, also applicable to epidemic diseases.
Slice Radix Phytolaccae (Shanglu), roast until hot, place against the throat covered with cloth for moxibustion-like warming; replace when the cloth cools. (Same as *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*)
Another prescription:
Take Zhenru (Radix Cynanchi Atrati) the size of a fingernail, place in the mouth, chew gently to extract juice, and apply to the throat. Feeling a slight unusual sensation is ideal; this also treats epidemic diseases. (Same as *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*)
Another Fuzi Wan (Aconite Pill) prescription:
Fuzi (Processed) Lilu (Veratrum Nigrum) (Equal parts)
Pulverize these two ingredients, mix with honey to form pills the size of a white mustard seed. Swallow one pill with water. Holding Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) in the mouth is also beneficial. Avoid pork and civet meat. (Both from Volume II)
Shenshi Tiehou Gao (Deep Master Throat-Pasting Ointment), for treating stiff tongue and sore throat due to cold damage.
Mi (Honey, one Sheng) Gancao (Licorice Root, four Liang) Zhugao (Lard, half Jin)
Gently heat and decoct the Licorice Root and Lard until boiling several times. Strain out the dregs, then add the Honey. Warm until melted and combined uniformly. Form into pieces the size of a jujube. Hold in the mouth to dissolve and swallow gradually. Avoid Seaweed (Haizao) and Pak Choi (Songcai). (From Volume XIV)
Jiyan Formula for treating sore throat and blockage in the throat following cold damage febrile disease, Wushan Gao (Black Flag Iris Ointment):
Raw Wushan (Iris Tectorii Rhizome, one Jin, chopped) Zhugao (Lard, one Jin)
Decoct the Iris Tectorii Rhizome with Lard. Strain the dregs. Wrap a portion the size of half an egg yolk in thin cotton, place in the mouth, and swallow gradually until cured. Avoid alcohol, garlic, etc. (Zhang Wenzhong, *Qianjin Fang* same)
Another Shengma Tang (Cimicifuga Decoction):
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, three Liang) Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla, four Liang) Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma, two Liang) Lingyangjiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu, three Liang, crushed) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, two Liang) Sheng Lugeng (Fresh Imperatae Rhizoma, chopped, one Sheng)
Chop these six ingredients. Decoct in seven Shengs of water until reduced to two and a half Shengs. Strain. Divide into three doses and take slowly. (*Qianjin Fang*, *Gu Jin Lu Yan* same, all from Volume III)
*Qianjin Fang* for treating dry mouth, excessive saliva, and sore throat after cold damage febrile disease, Ganzao Wan (Dried Jujube Pill):
Ganzao (Dried Jujube Fruit, twenty fruits) Wumei (Mume Fructus, ten fruits)
Crush and mix these two ingredients. Mix with honey to form pills the size of apricot kernels. Wrap in cotton, hold in the mouth to dissolve, and swallow the saliva to heal naturally. (From Volume X)
