A prescription from *Qianjin Fang* for treating Guan Ge (obstruction and regurgitation), abdominal distension, and fecal impaction.
Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shaoyao) [6 fen], Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao) [6 fen], Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin) [5 fen], Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xingren) [8 fen, skin and tips removed], Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang) [8 fen].
Grind the above five herbs into fine powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of a loquat seed. Take ten pills per dose with warm water, twice daily, which is effective.
Another prescription:
Roast a single-clove garlic until cooked, peel it, wrap it in silk, and insert it into the anus; qi flow will immediately resume. Alternatively, slice ginger, wrap it in salt, and use as an enema suppository; both methods are excellent.
Another prescription:
Rhizoma Zingiberis Siccatum (Ganjiang), Sal (Yan), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xingren).
Grind the above three herbs in equal proportions and use as an enema suppository.
Another prescription for treating abdominal distension, Guan Ge, and fecal obstruction:
Fructus Evodiae (Wuzhuyu) [1 sheng, roasted], Rhizoma Zingiberis Siccatum (Ganjiang), Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shaoyao), Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Gancao, roasted), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong) [each 2 liang], Realgar (Xionghuang) [3 fen, ground], Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Radix et Rhizoma Asari (Xixin) [each 4 liang], Concha Margaritifera (Zhenzhu) [1 fen, ground], Cortex Pruni Persicae Albus (Taobaipi) [one handful].
Cut the above thirteen herbs. Decoct in one dou of water until reduced to three sheng. Strain the dregs. Add the powders of Realgar and Concha Margaritifera, along with one sheng of wine. Simmer over low heat for three boils. Take one sheng per dose. Stop taking the medicine once bowel movement occurs; it is not necessary to consume the entire volume. Administer doses at intervals corresponding to the time it takes a person to walk ten li. (All extracted from Volume 15)
Xu Renze stated: This disease has persisted without other residual symptoms, caused solely by improper dietary management leading to excessive heat. The accumulation of heat causes constipation. If the constipation is due to qi stagnation, one should continue using previous qi-regulating methods, such as taking Baidu Sanwei Wan or formulas containing Semen Lepidii (Tinglizi) for water retention to induce laxation. If it is Feng Bi (wind-type constipation), follow the method of taking Dahuang Wuwei Wan described below. In cases of acute constipation, characterized by stiffness and pain in bones and muscles, bodily restlessness and heat, dry and cracked lips and mouth, and inability to pass stool, one should use the following Erwei Tang of Dahuang and Mangxiao to induce laxation.
Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang) [6 liang], Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao) [5 liang].
First, cut the Radix et Rhizoma Rhei. Decoct in four sheng of water until reduced to two sheng. Strain the dregs. Add Natrii Sulfas and take in one dose. Laxation should occur shortly thereafter. If there is no sensation after a long period, administer hot drinks to assist. If this formula fails to produce results as before, combine it with Damaren Wuwei Wan to achieve smooth and rapid evacuation.
Formula for Wuwei Dahuang Wan:
Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang) [5 liang], Semen Cannabis Sativae (Damarenzi) [1 sheng, lightly roasted and ground], Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao) [6 liang], Radix Puerariae Lobatae (Gange), Cortex Morus Radicis (Sanggenbaipi) [each 5 liang].
For the above five herbs, first grind the first four into a powder. Then grind the Semen Cannabis Sativae into a paste. Mix the paste with the four-herb powder and knead thoroughly. Add a small amount of honey and knead again. Form pills the size of a loquat seed. Initial dose is ten pills, taken twice daily. Gradually increase the dosage until bowel movements become regular. (Indicated for wind-type constipation with obstruction; also found in the lower volume by Wu Sheng)
