The "Ten Waters" in the etiology of disease refer to Green Water, Red Water, Yellow Water, White Water, Black Water, Suspended Water, Wind Water, Stone Water, Interior Water, and Qi Water.
Green Water: Edema begins from the head (other texts state it begins from the feet), named White Water, with its root in the Lung. (Jiaomu [Zanthoxyl Pericarpium] is the primary herb for this). Edema begins from the face, named Green Water, with its root in the Liver. (Daji [Euphorbiae Radix] is the primary herb for this).
Suspended Water: Edema begins from the four limbs, accompanied by abdominal fullness and distension, with swelling throughout the body, named Wind Water, with its root in the Stomach. (Zeqi [Phytolaccae Radix] is the primary herb for this).
For the above ten conditions, prepare the ten herbs listed above in equal proportions. According to the initial site of the disease, increase the dosage of the corresponding primary herb by one part. Add Sidou [Crotomi Semen] (four parts, remove heart and skin), crush into powder, mix and sieve. Combine with honey to form pills the size of a wu zi (Chinese parasol tree seed). Take three pills per dose. The treatment should cease once bowel movement occurs. If there is no bowel movement, take three times a day. Alternatively, use as a powder. Take half a qian bi (a small measuring spoon) before meals. Repeat the same method the next morning. If still no effect after another dose, continue.
Another prescription:
The first type of water disease begins with edema in the face and eyes, spreading over the whole body, named Green Water, with its root in the Liver. (Daji [Euphorbiae Radix] is the primary herb for this).
The second type of water disease begins with edema in the heart region, named Red Water, with its root in the Heart. (Tingli [Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen] is the primary herb for this).
The third type of water disease begins with abdominal edema, named Yellow Water, with its root in the Spleen. (Gansui [Kansui Radix] is the primary herb for this).
The fourth type of water disease begins with edema in the feet, accompanied by rebellious Qi and cough, named White Water, with its root in the Lung Qi. (The original text here contains a missing or illegible character "[ ] Ben", indicating a missing herb name; contextually implies a specific herb for Lung edema, but strictly translated as "(Text missing/illegible) is the primary herb for this").
The fifth type of water disease begins with edema on the dorsum of the foot, named Black Water, with its root in the Kidney. (Lianqiao [Forsythiae Fructus] is the primary herb for this).
The sixth type of water disease begins with facial edema extending to the feet, named Xuan Water (Black Water), with its root in the Gallbladder. (Yuanhua [Genkwa Flos] is the primary herb for this).
The seventh type of water disease begins from the four limbs, with abdominal fullness and distension, and swelling throughout the body, named Wind Water, with its root in the Stomach. (Zeqi [Phytolaccae Radix] is the primary herb for this).
The eighth type of water disease features slight edema in the four limbs but significant isolated abdominal swelling, named Stone Water, with its root in the Bladder. (Sangbaipí [Mori Cortex] is the primary herb for this).
The ninth type of water disease begins with fullness in the lower abdomen, named Interior Water, with its root in the Small Intestine. (Sidou [Crotomi Semen] is the primary herb for this).
The tenth type of water disease fluctuates between excess and deficiency, appearing and disappearing intermittently, named Qi Water, with its root in the Large Intestine. (Chixiaodou [Phaseoli Semen Rubrum] is the primary herb for this).
For the above ten diseases, the medicines are prepared in equal proportions. If the symptoms are identical, double the dosage. Crush and mix with white honey, forming pills the size of a small bean. Take one pill before meals with water, three times a day. To induce purgation to expel the pathogen, take three pills. For patients with weak constitutions, adjust the dosage according to judgment. This treats retained food, fluid retention, cold-heat, and warm diseases. Avoid spicy vegetables, pork, and raw fish; cooked foods are permitted. (Fan Wang's *Qianjin Yi* records the same).
Another prescription for treating Ten Waters: Dahuang Wan Formula.
Dahuang [Rhei Radix et Rhizoma] (one part) Xiaoshi [Natrii Sulfas] (one part) Daji [Euphorbiae Radix] (one part, processed by frying/heating) Gansui [Kansui Radix] (one part, processed by frying/heating) Yuanhua [Genkwa Flos] (one part, processed by frying/heating) Jiaomu [Zanthoxyli Pericarpium] (one part) Tingli [Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen] (one part).
Crush the above seven herbs, mix, and sieve. Combine with honey to form pills the size of a small bean. Take one pill before meals with water, twice a day. Gradually increase the dose until therapeutic effects are observed (zhi). (Fan Wang records the same).
