Etiologically, difficulty in urination is caused by heat in the Kidney and Bladder. These two meridians are exterior-interiorly related and both govern water metabolism. Water flows through the Small Intestine, enters the Bladder (Pao), and becomes urine. When pathogenic heat resides within the Zang-Fu organs, the flow of water becomes obstructed and astringent. If the heat intensity is mild, it manifests merely as difficulty in urination. Upon pulse diagnosis, if the Chi position pulse is Floating (Fu), it indicates difficulty in urination; if the Chi position pulse is Soft (Ru), it indicates difficulty in urination; if the Chi position pulse is Slow (Huan), it suggests that difficulty in urination is accompanied by other signs of obstruction and astringency.
