The *Wai Tai Mi Yao* records eight prescriptions for treating infantile cough accompanied by abdominal distension. The first is the Seven-Ingredient Minor Schisandra Decoction (Qiwu Xiaowuweizi Tang).
**Prescription of Seven-Ingredient Minor Schisandra Decoction (Qiwu Xiaowuweizi Tang):**
Schisandrae Fructus (crushed), Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (each 1 fen); Scutellariae Radix, Licorice Root (roasted), Ephedrae Herba (nodes removed), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, Cinnamomi Cortex (each 1 fen).
Chop the above herbs, decoct with one sheng of water until reduced to seven ge, divide into five doses. Observe dietary restrictions as usual.
Another prescription treats infantile cough that improves during the day but worsens at night, characterized by initial dyspnea and inability to cry again. Use the Four-Ingredient Descurainia Pill (Siwu Kuandong Wan).
Descurainiae Flos, Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (each 1 liang 5 qian); Longan Earth (Fulonggan) (1 fen); Cinnamomi Cortex (2 fen).
Pulverize the above herbs, mix with honey to form a paste. Take a quantity the size of a jujube pit, apply to the nipple for the infant to suckle. Administer three times daily. (This prescription is identical to that in *Qian Jin Fang*).
Another prescription treats infants aged ten days to fifty days who suddenly suffer from acute cough, regurgitation of milk, vomiting, and inability to breathe day or night. Use the Four-Ingredient Decoction (Siwu Tang).
Platycodonis Radix, Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (each 3 fen); Licorice Root (1 fen, roasted); Ophiopogonis Tuber (7 fen, heart removed).
Chop the above herbs, decoct with one sheng of water until reduced to six ge, strain. Divide into five doses. Continue until recovery. (*Qian Jin Fang* contains Cinnamomi Cortex but lacks Platycodonis Radix; decoct two shengs of water to one sheng, dip cotton wool in the decoction, and drip into the infant's mouth four to five times day and night, while regulating breastfeeding.)
Another prescription treats infants suffering from cold invasion and exogenous febrile disease, presenting with sudden cough, qi rebellion, wheezing sounds in the throat, qi counterflow, aversion to cold, nasal congestion, and clear rhinorrhea. Use the Aster Decoction (Ziwan Tang).
Asteris Radix et Rhizoma, Prunus Armeniacae Semen (skin and tip removed), Licorice Root (roasted), Scutellariae Radix, Ephedrae Herba (nodes removed), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Cinnamomi Cortex, Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, Angelicae Sinensis Radix (each 1 liang); Rheum Palmati Radix et Rhizoma (3 fen).
Chop the above ten herbs, decoct with three shengs of water until reduced to nine ge, strain. For children aged one to five years, adjust the dose according to circumstances. (*Qian Jin Fang* notes: Infants aged over sixty days to one hundred days take 2.5 ge per dose; those aged over one hundred days to two hundred days take 3 ge per dose; other ages follow similar proportions.)
*Qian Jin Fang* treats infantile cough using the Eight-Ingredient Fresh Ginger Decoction (Bawu Shengjiang Jian).
Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (7 liang), Zingiberis Rhizoma (4 liang), Cinnamomi Cortex (2 liang), Licorice Root (3 liang), Prunus Armeniacae Semen (1 sheng, tip and skin removed), Descurainiae Flos, Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (each 3 liang), Honey (1 sheng).
Pulverize the above herbs, mix with honey, and simmer gently over low heat until it resembles maltose syrup. Allow the infant to hold in the mouth and swallow, adjusting the amount based on age and size. For a hundred-day-old infant, use a quantity the size of a jujube pit. Administer four to five times daily for excellent results. (From Volume Five.)
*Beiji Fang* treats infantile cough with qi rebellion using the Apricot Kernel Decoction (Xingren Tang).
Ephedrae Herba (8 fen, nodes removed), Prunus Armeniacae Semen (40 pieces, tip removed).
Chop the above two herbs, decoct with one sheng of water until reduced to seven ge, strain. Divide into doses. Do not administer to hundred-day-old infants suffering from excessive internal heat and rapid breathing. It is highly effective for infants with red and yellow urine. Adults and older children should adjust the dose accordingly. Observe dietary restrictions as usual.
Another prescription treats infantile cough.
Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (6 fen), Fritillariae Bulbus (3 fen), Descurainiae Flos (1 fen).
Pulverize the above three herbs into a powder. Take a quantity the size of a soybean, apply to the nipple for the infant to suckle. Administer three times daily. The nursing mother should observe dietary restrictions as usual.
Mr. Liu’s prescription treats infantile cough preventing supine position.
Licorice Root (6 fen, roasted), Platycodonis Radix (4 fen), Morus Albae Cortex, Fritillariae Bulbus, Poria (each 3 fen); Isatidis Radix, Isatis Folium, Schisandrae Fructus, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (each 2 fen).
Chop the above nine herbs, decoct with two shengs of water until reduced to eight ge, strain. Administer an appropriate dose based on the infant's condition and size. Observe dietary restrictions as usual.
